Learn networking basics and build on that. Understand basics like subnets, routing vs routed protocols. Get certified, not certificates of completion. PowerShell, bash, python. Ping, nslookup, traceroute. Foundational concepts and tools will help no matter what area you decide to specialize in. Excel. Can't emphasize it enough, learn Excel. You use it for everything, every day. Learn to take good notes. The "hot certs" change but underlying functionality doesn't. I see data science, AI, ML, hot right now. Next year will be slightly different, so on. And be a person. If you're arrogant, difficult to work with, or people don't like you, you'll be first to go when layoffs come, no matter how smart you are.

"Thank you! I'm eager to break into the tech industry, but I've been struggling to pinpoint the right field and where to start. I often find gaps in my knowledge when exploring different areas. Following your advice, I plan to focus on learning basic networking and Python. Considering pursuing a CCNA or Network+ certification to solidify my skills. After that, hopefully, my path will be clearer, making it easier to figure out the next steps. Any additional guidance would be greatly appreciated!"

Great content. I would like to share one story of a friend of my friend. He learned code by himself and he only had his portfolio done, barely had 2 certifications in his CV. So, the recruiter asked him why he forgot to add the certification to CV, so he explained he doesn't have them. He learned through KZbin/forum/reedit and so on. He went through the process with recruiter, got the job, and a very good starting salary just because he had shown he is a pro active person.

Enjoyed the video until you mentioned CISSP as one of the best first certifications to get. CISSP is considered "the gold standard' for cyber security and you need 5 freakin years of real life work experience working in cyber security. And the exam is considered one of the hardest out there. Anyone who is entering the cyber security should try to score an easier cert to land on the first job and from there work towards CISSP.

I guess I do need to look into the methodology how the ranking was done. But based on my interpretation it seem more toward popularity and salary. So I guess AWS do pay better than CISSP. But in term of validation of knowledge there no better way then getting attestation from DOD 8570 requirement: IAT Level I: Entry-level positions requiring basic IA knowledge and skills. CompTIA Security+ Cisco Certified CyberOps Associate IAT Level II: Mid-level positions requiring more advanced IA knowledge and skills. CompTIA CySA+ CompTIA Security+ (with additional certifications) IAT Level III: Advanced-level positions requiring in-depth IA knowledge and skills. Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) IAM Level I: Individuals managing, overseeing, or providing IA support. CompTIA Security+ IAM Level II: Individuals managing, overseeing, or providing IA support at a higher level. CompTIA CySA+ CISSP IAM Level III: Individuals managing, overseeing, or providing IA support at the highest level. CISSP IASAE I: Individuals providing oversight and direction for the implementation of enterprise-wide IA programs. CISSP (or Associate) CISSP-ISSEP CISSP-ISSAP IASAE II: Individuals providing oversight and direction for the management of IA programs. CISSP (or Associate) CISSP-ISSEP CISSP-ISSAP

HI! I'm from Italy and I'm studiyng for AWS Solution Architect Assiociate and I've also planned for others AWS certifications like ML and Cybersecurity. Of course, the majority of the documentations for study these certifications are in english ( which is pretty ok for me, it will take less time for me if they were in Italian), but certainly not for everyone in my country. This leads me to think whether it is an advantage for me or even a disadvantage, thinking of the fact that here the companies will certainly "evolve" later (as well as in other states)

While I enjoyed this video, Having worked in various I.T. roles for over 20 years, to tell anyone that the CISSP is a great first certifications to level up is horrible advice…. I know many well versed Cyber-security professionals who worked for way longer than the 5 years recommended before attempting that certification and still failed. Not to mention Security + from CompTIA satisfies the 8570 requirement from the DOD. Does it pay well? Absolutely, and it is the most sought after security certification as it pertains to governance, BUT, it is a MONSTER of a test, I have heard it again and again… please ensure you do not underestimate that certification test.😊

Been in the industry for nearly 3 decades. My opinion? Certifications should not be part of the hiring process. Ask the technical questions and see if the potential hire can critically think through the problem. I have worked with so many techs with multiple certifications who couldn't do the basic work that each cert covered. Certifications do not positively show that a tech has the skill set or cognitive ability to do the job. Being around so many "certified" techs with no ability to perform the work is the reason I stopped taking certs years ago. The only reason I get certs today is to fulfill requirements for my employer. As an example, my employer supports Azure, Google Cloud, and AWS. To maintain partner requirements, the employer is required to have certified techs. Otherwise, I wouldn't waste my time with certs.
@williamparrish2436 Жыл бұрын
I think you missed an important point about certs. They give a student the ability to learn at a higher level. Why do we study Biology 101? So that we can learn the vocabulary to be able to grow. And that is what a certification is. CCNA 101. If the employer expects more than that, then they are foolish, correct? But if you speak to someone about Spanning Tree, they at least know what Layer 2 is. Who would you prefer on your phones as a new hire then? Someone with zero experience with switches and routers? Or someone who has spent the last 6 months in their private time reading about switches and routers?
