Gothic Revival and Tudor Revival are my favorites and work together very well. I wish more homes being built today had the character of an old home. The Contractor Generic style is really boring.

Most people are not into Victorian houses nowdays, and building codes across most major towns and cities would probably not allow anything that deviates from the neighborhood design template. I don't see the design coming back into fashion anytime soon due to its association (in most peoples minds at least) with haunted horror houses.

So many houses of all styles feature exterior shutters of the wrong size for the window, or installed incorrectly. Each shutter’s width should be half the width of the window it’s supposed to cover, and the height equal to the height of the window. In other words, the shutters should look like they could close, flush inside the exterior window casing even if they’re just decorative.) Worse yet is adding shutters to a house that would never have had shutters.

I love all of the styles so much it’s hard to pick a favorite. The delicate lacy verge-boards of the Gothic Revival are so lovely, and the Italianate is one of my favorite styles for row houses in San Francisco. Im a huge fan of the Second Empire, the stately manors of brick with their decorative roof shingles. As far as Queen Anne style goes, who doesn’t love the Carson Mansion in Eureka California, it’s one of the most photographed homes in America, and there’s a lovely pink Queen Anne across the street that the owners daughter lived in. I couldn’t help but notice the George F Barber design number 30 home that you presented, the one with the round front porch to the side and the bell shaped tower, it’s a classic. I would like to know where you got the information tat Folk Victorian was the most popular, as I believe the Queen Anne is by far more representative of the classic Victorian, as all the Painted Lady books feature them extensively. I could agree that it was the most widely used style due to its affordability for the lower and middle classes. You missed Stick Eastlake which I also love. I’m really glad to see your channel and I subscribed because you did such a stellar job presenting the Magic Chef Mansion. All in all I have to say Queen Anne is my favorite, as I’m a big fan of towers and wrap around porches. I have been studying Victorian architecture all of my life and have an extensive library on the subject. My passion project however is a 1/12 scale Queen Anne house that I have been building over the course of the last 13 years, and is filled with my collection of miniatures that I have collected for 42 years since I was a senior in high school. The house I built is nearly 4 feet wide and four feet tall. It is a classic style with 15 rooms that are all decorated in period style museum quality miniatures leaving absolutely nothing out of the decor. I have to date invested approximately $50,000 in this miniature home. As a child I saw the pictures of Queen Mary’s dollhouse and I promised myself that I would have one for myself one day. Every book in my library can be opened and read< with a magnifying glass of course, I had all the wallpapers imported from Spain in period accurate styles, most rooms have at least three or four different papers in them. The house is completely electrified and each room can be lit up with its own individual circuit. It has sound as well and there’s a radio on the front porch with a speaker built in underneath that plays two of my favorite songs. Now while I was decorating the house and choosing the furnishings, I did extensive research on what it would be like to live during the Victorian era of the 1870’s and all I could think was how absolutely dreadful it was to be a woman in that period. All the soot and ash from coal burning stoves and gas lighting, the arsenic tainted green wallpapers that filled so many parlors and slowly poisoned the owners, all that open flame everywhere while wearing oohoodles of lace and fabric dragged through the manure filled streets and the horrid drudgery of Blue Monday laundry day. My house is represented as being built in 1870 Daisy Avenue but had a remodel in 1927, and a summer day of 1927 is what I chose to theme the house as. This way I could have a modern kitchen with all the luxury of technology, women with the right to vote and freed from their restrictive corsets. The house has many Victorian style pieces but also has one Art Deco master bedroom that I just love. One of my most treasured items is my dining room China, a stunning service for 6 in the classic Blue Willow pattern, I ordered it hand made from Stokesay England where it was produced using the same techniques of the actual Victorian era pieces. The table is set with sterling silver chargers, the China, real crystal classes in 4 different sizes real linen napkins with silver napkin rings a beautiful hand tatted miniature lace tablecloth that was custom made by an artisan in Turkey. I had miniature artisans from all over the world hand create 100,s of items in the house, and staged each room as though someone had just left the room. You would really love it. I’m in the process of creating the exterior gardens that I have had a jacaranda tree made for and dozens and dozens of miniature flowers. I have just to finish the exterior and have the draperies all custom made and then my life’s project will be complete. I plan to have my ashes stored in the tower of the house when I’m done living and then having the house donated to a museum or library where it can be put behind glass and shared with everyone.

Hi! To answer your question in regards as to why we chose the Folk Victorian style as the most popular; it is because of the shear quantity of them that were constructed. This made it the most common style in the time period. Also, I have a bit of personal bias because of their quaint charm. Your 1/12 scale Queen Anne House sounds absolutely amazing! I have so much respect for people who follow their passions and pursue life long goals. Your story and your work are truly inspirational! I would love to see pictures, do you have an instagram or facebook page showcasing your progress? -Ken

I set out in the 1970s what then we called Refurbishing which ideally was a mishmash of home remodeling or reconstruction. Over the years I know its come to mean something different oft applied to electronic gadgets mostly. By far and away the term Victorian was lost on us as you've pointed out there were so many brands. We did everything from stylizing them to savaging them, eg, apartments, modern offices etc., and modernizing. In the end I became a devoted fan of Frank Lloyd Wright who wished to replace the lot, with American designs specifically. But must admit that in my time I came across a certain style of 2nd Empire homes in the mid-west that I've not seen any examples of in your videos that have seen so far, except a smattering of in Nathan's review of I believe Lafayette Park. It was a set designed by Ernst Jannsen (?) Those are closer to what I prefer, they're more flamboyant and creative in design, playful is the word I'd use or wildly creative. When you've seen one most are struck by them. Many have what I describe as half sized cupolas so much more ornate... Actually you'd just need to see them as am obviously struggling here to describe them adequately So I guess for Victorian's if I was forced to claim a preference it'd have to be those.

Urbana, Ohio has several Gothic Revivals. It has an Italianate west of town. The city has at least 4 Second Empire. 3 are on the same street. The city to its south, Springfield, has different styles of Italianstes and 3 Second Empire of which one is in the historic preservation district while the larger one and smaller ones are threatened with demolition. Only two Gothic Revivals survived until the 2010s. One was destroyed by fire while the one down the street is the rear of a limestone Italianate addition from the 1870s.

I would choose the Queen Anne style for Victorian architecture even though my favorite style is its exact opposite: Georgian. P.S. Italianate is pronounced with the "ate" at the end sounding just like the a in "I ate dinner or I hate it." Good video and pictures chosen for examples.

I actually grew up and spent most of my childhood living in a big Queen ann Victorian house it was a beautiful house and it was that blue and burnt yellow color it had a fuck ton of stained glass windows it was a gorgeous home unfortunately when my parents got divorced we couldn't afford it anymore my mom was considering going and buying the house again after she got situated but by that time houses regardless of their style we're just costing more then when my family moved in in the 1980s but then it was like the early 2000s by the time she had what she thought would have been enough to go and buy it back but it ended up costing more cuz as you know the 2000s everything cost more than it did back in the day and she also let me know that those big Queen and Victorian houses are prone to weathering so you need to go and replace the paint the wood the shingles and everything outside every year or two years or so and she let me know that also is not really a cheap task especially if the plan is to get all the stuff and replace it with what the original would have been like and she decided there was no point in getting such a big beautiful house if you're not going to be able to keep up the original architecture. I was the weird kid in school that lived in the big creepy haunted house the house that no one really wants to come up to on Halloween and the house that nobody at school wants to come and spend the night at because it creeps them out. Sadly whoever lives there now is not bothering to keep up with anything outside not the porch not the roof not the paint nothing they're not even bothering to clean up the yard or trim the hedges so now everything's all overgrown and full of sticks and shrubs and they have a whole bunch of old cars and old metal thrown out in the yard so now it looks like tweakers live there but when my family lived there they certainly were keeping up with everything because as I said my family saw no point in buying a beautiful extravagant house if you're not going to maintain it.

The Mansard roof style lasted (at least here in Pittsburgh) well after the era of "Second Empire" homes. (1860-1880) There are many otherwise obvious Edwardian era (1901-1910) houses topped with them or at least has the front facade of the top story slanted and shingled as a Mansard roof even if the other three elevations are in fact walls! , I know of at least one that "only" goes back to 1915!
