What are "Untouchables" in India wearing? Today, over 33% of India’s population belongs to the “untouchable” caste. For the past few weeks, Sadia and I worked closely with an NGO called Bless in rural Tamil Nadu that helps support over 300 untouchable villages. One of the core questions we ask people throughout our journey is “What are you wearing today and how much does it cost?” It’s a question we ask everyone because people are really curious to know what other people are wearing. Most of these street interviews take place in the fashion capitals of the world: Paris, London, and NYC... but what if we could find a common thread that connects a fashionista living in SOHO to a mother of two living in a tin shack in the South of India? What if that mother was born into a caste system that is the sole reason for her invisibility? How do the two intersect? Well, I would say, every person we meet everywhere we go, people deeply care to wake up and look their best. Both human beings care deeply for their family, education, and what the future would look like.
This was one of my favorite interviews to conduct. We worked closely with this village and they are truly some of the most affectionate people we ever met. We are working to raise money for a family of two widows, in the hopes of building them a proper home. The goal is to raise at least a thousand euros. After we meet that threshold, the remaining money will be given directly to the village to help with their necessities You can also donate to the Bless organization that helps support villages all across the Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu (link below). If you’re unable to donate, I hope you share this video with family and friends. Thank you 💕!
I hope you all will take the time to watch the full video on KZbin and let us know how it made you feel.
