Just to avoid this: always set a good background that does not clip into your cam or leaves white edges. I have one set in a cozy room with a hearth. The first time people see it, they component me about the background and after that they never question it ever again so they never know where I am and always assume I'm in the office.

Speaking as a senior manager. I had no problem approving my team members "working from home" even when it was their mother-in-law's home a quarter of the way around the world, in a different country. A few took 2 months which turned into 4 months away. They got their work done, made no difference to the team, and allowed their distant families to get reacquainted with new babies. Most importantly it showed that we valued their contribution to our business. And provided something more valuable to them than a wage increase, better work/life balance. Loyalty swings both ways.

He said that it doesn't state in the contract but I must tell him always because if he didn't approve of certain locations I wished to visit/ travel to, I would be denied to be in that locations during my PTO or time outside my daily schedule I simply told him unless you're believing to be above labour laws I have 0 obligation to notify him where I'd go on my PTO or out of schedule time nor he has the authority to control my off time and location He fired me due to that, and I kept the emails, made a complain against the company, he had to pay me over 400k in compensation damages If memory doesn't fail me, when the court ordered him to pay, he turns to me after the court hearing, and says : " I wasn't serious in firing you, it was just to teach you a lesson to obey your superiors, I had intended to rehire you 1 year after it " I simply answered back : " Yeah, and as you were proved by the judge, the labour laws in this country aren't made based on his wishes and wants nor workers are to accept having their life damaged over his antics "

Years ago I worked for a company where we took turns being on call, so as to monitor the machines that operated 24/7. In case something happened with one of them, the on-call person was to go to the office and fix the problem. I lived about an hour and a half from the office, so it would be a bit of a trip to go in if needed, but that was part of my job. One weekend, my wife and I decided to take a weekend vacation to the city where the machines were located. We found a very nice hotel about five minutes from the office. I was naive enough to tell my boss about my upcoming trip, and he told me that I couldn't go, that I needed to stay home in case something happened to one of the machines!

One time I was just leaving a store down the street from the office and the pager went off. I went straight in and called the customer back. He asked how long until I got to the office and didn't want to believe me when I said I was already there.

Isn't it interesting how corporate's first inclination is that somebody is working from a hotel room because they are taking time off. There are a number of reasons to be in a hotel room not related to relaxing etc. Damage to ones home, be it storm/hurricane, in Florida, you can spring a slab leak, maybe a loud remodel is happening where contractors are at your home running equipment. Maybe a family member is receiving treatment for an illness and the employee has been advised to leave temporarily to avoid potential germ risks. Maybe it's Thursday or Friday and the employee is attending an out of town wedding, where they are able to complete work easily during their work hours, but arrived a day or 2 early because of flight limitations or planned activities, like the rehearsal dinner in the evening, not during work hours. If the employee is by contract, cleared to work remotely, their work is adequately being performed, it really isn't corporate's business.

Stare like California that gas some wildly different laws... Problems. The company needs to have a policy about it's okay to stay local but you need to get permission to be somewhere outside the normal boundaries. Heck I worked remote for a company in a different county. I could work in my home county and in the corp. County but nowhere else. They had to fix payroll so that my taxes were deducted for the right location. Because my county rate was different. If I had moved and they couldn't make it work I'd have stopped being remote.

As an HR professional, it usually comes down to the circumstances. For example, let’s say you are not taking a vacation; If you travel to a foreign country where it is common to lose access to internet required for your work, it can potentially have a negative impact on your work, your team’s productivity, failure to meet deadlines, and so on. On the other end of this spectrum, we have an employee who wants to work from a library, Starbucks, or similar place. Productivity and availability may not be an issue, but risking confidential information being seen by passersby or exposed over an unsecured connection can be devastating as well. My point is that all facts must be considered in these situations. Not everyone is capable of working remotely - if distractions are too great and affect productivity, they can be required to return to the office, or risk termination for poor performance. If you approach things factually and logically, issues are less likely to occur.

Thank you for clarifying. It's interesting to see both sides of a situation. I have worked at a place like she details in these videos. The environment was highly toxic. They had huge turnover rates. Those who had my same position worked there long enough to get the required 2-3 years experience most other employers want to see on a resume, and then the employee would leave. They were awful. My direct supervisor acted like the woman from The Devil Wears Prada. She was a nightmare. In situations like these videos highlight, she is typically not trying to show an instance where a security or production issue is occurring. She's showing the nonsense of overreaching management who think they own people. If neither is an issue, it truly should not matter if an employee took a long weekend to a place with reliable wifi and are working remotely during their contracted hours.

So where she connects to the internet from could be EXTREMELY important. 2) "Could you be in the office in 2 hours?" An emergency could arise that she would be required to be present to correct/handle. 3) And most importantly, if she is not on a contract, her attitude would be enough to have her employment terminated. Most employment is "At Will" and can be terminated at the employer's discretion. Especially for insubordination!

The true risk to this is connecting to public networks. Employees are the biggest risk to the security of a system and public networks like hotels, coffee shops, etc are a huge vector of attack. Social engineers will ask where your employees hang out on CS calls just to find a place to fish for access etc. Often times that is the policy because of this but also often times managers don't know why the policy is that way either and make up reasons leading to interactions like this.

One easy way to never let them know is simply to buy 4 flat sheets. Tack one up on the wall with thumbtacks and have that be your backdrop. When it needs to be washed, take it down and replace it with one of the other three that are clean. Do that everywhere you go. For seating use a folding camp chair. Use this chair everywhere you go. Use the same folding camp table for your laptop support, everywhere you go. And so on...

Also, if you go missing, your employer is going to be one of the people they ask about where you last were and the last time you logged into work. I'd love that was like this down in my country (no US). Due to insurance limitations, employers need to give the national insurance company your home address. So it is quite literally WFH. If you need to apply the insurance on a WFH day, but the accident (fall or similar) happened in other address than your home, then you are in trouble and the insurance doesn't work. The one exception where this level of control is okay is if your work requires a high level of internet security because you are dealing with sensitive data. Most hotel wifi is not very secure, so I can see where there would be conflict here. However, this is still very controlling management behavior.

@lumonetic1124 im a UK employee of a global corp headquartered inthe States. Our IT has been outsourced to India, our finance outsourced to Poland. These used to be local UK roles. It's the same work, getting done on time, just somewhere else - cheaper. It gets worse. Since COVID alot of our administrative functions (even customer facing)are now being done by what Management joyfully call Robots. (AI Automation) They think they are not scaring people by calling AI, Robots, but they don't realise they are insulting those replaced. Of course that resource can be better allocated. Nope, the headcount can be. If it can be done elsewhere, your UK/European/US remote working role can be outsourced. If it can be reliably procees mapped, it can be eliminated. The irony is that as a user, our IT has never been better. We no longer have to massage UK gatekeeper egos to get anything done. Our finance not so much. Very frustrating to deal with - no ownership - just numbers - no customer consideration.

There are several reasons why this is actually legal, but it depends on the company and your tasks/workload. My company requires me to be in a two hour commute to my office or my client office when I work from home in case of emergencies. There are also legal issues related to the location you are working (like working abroad is not always possible and requieres a review of the DSP policy). Plus all the issues with confidentiality, data protection and public/private wi-fi. I would ask "Veronika" to "reworld" that phrase, but she is not 100% wrong. Nobody likes micromanaging, but some people really need to be micromanaged. Being office savvy is not a common things, I have witnessed fellow coworkers doing things beyond my comprehension and when it happened I felt for my manager. (Let's just say, that someone signed and shared a strictly reserved document, just because "someone *they don't even work with* asked to and I didn't want to sound rude by saying no"...

When I decided to give my boss a heads up that I was going to be working from my RV he gave me crap for it. I said "what's wrong..there's nothing in the HR policy telling me I cannot do this. My client is still a phone/Teams call away. What's the problem? Are you trying to micromanage me??" He backed off. Your manager doesn't trust you if they're doing this..

Yeah there is a policy that states this usually. I don't know about US, but in Europe, data sensitive jobs usually won't let you connect with the servers, in the internal network, thus using public wifi is forbidden. Also when there is no possibility to do SSH connections or other stuff... So yes, your employer CAN ask you to use non public networks, meaning that you can't work from random hotel or use your mobile data as hotspot since it has dynamic IP, not enabling it to be whitelisted.

@@stitchfinger7678 can you bring me an example of "that kind of work", I'm genuinely interested =). To my knowledge, using public access points are strictly forbidden in any kind of remote work, due the lack of security + its super easy to listen traffic or even upload malware if connected to public networks. Then you take your PC home, or even better, hook it up in your office, so the malware now has access to the company network... Look it as placing random USB stick to your PC - this is the easiest way to get your company servers locked by ransomware, even tho you per-se didn't have the data yourself, you made an access point to the hackers.

As I work it for a large company, you should still let them know as it could cause remote access issues if we find you logging in from somewhere else. It will likely be seen as a hacker and your account will get locked down.

In Germany that has to do with insurance issues - it has not only to do with tax purposes. This is why it is important for the company to know where the work location is. Otherwise the employee is not insured in case something happens (e.g. an accident) and both, the employer and the employee would get into trouble.

Not sure for other countries but there are some where the laws could be an issue for the company also, for security reasons it could be important to know that you will not connect from your usual place. Of course this info will not be for your hierarchy but for IT team. so it clearly depends on many variable things. especially with what you have to do and how you should do it. e.g : if you are working on a very confidential data, the place you want to work from could be unsecure for such datas

This goes back longer than I can remember. Employee does something, management does not like it, but they realize there are no rules against it. They try the old "because I said so" or "because I'm the boss", in an attempt to intimidate the employee. The issue gets sent to HR, Legal, or some such department, and after a certain period of time, a mass e-mail gets sent out that starts with "It has come to our attention...".

fun fact: in Poland it’s regulated by law, you have to fill papers and inform always when you start remote work and from where you are working. It’s for safety reasons I believe - if anything happens during your remote work the employer is responsible to cover health expenses etc. and also they are obligated to pay off your electricity costs used during such time - it’s pennies but yeah that’s the law
