So a bit of context: the main lady here is a courtesan who fell for the nawab dude(a rich noble). He used her, but she got attached to the level of delusion of thinking that he’s gonna marry her. The guy actually calls her to his wedding to perform to humiliate her, and she comes wearing this flower veil(it’s worn by couples during wedding in Muslim culture) and she’s drunk. She performs, while intoxicated, and eventually gets slapped by him. Later you see the leader of the courtesans asking her to complete her performance, and she does it, crying,embarrassed and humiliated. You can see the actress did a great job emoting all the things during that part, you can see her being delusional to having all the 5 stages of grief to her final acceptance of her fate. The dance in the last part is purposefully done messy, as it’s the demand of the scene, her hand gestures and footwork isn’t clear and articulate as it should be. The actress here is Richa Chaddha, she is trained in this dance form, filming this took 99 retakes partly due to the emotional aspect of it and partly due to the technicality of the camera work. Overall, my favourite video song from the series .

Also, you note that after Malikajaan says a tawaif must always finish her performance Lajjo returns to the dance alone. Even her backup dancers stand to the side to watch. You see them in the background. She was deliberately left to face the humiliation alone.

I love how Sanjay Leela Bansali is able to take traditional music, dance and costumes and make them so stunning and mesmerizing that people fall in love with traditional arts every time they watch his films. I think we tend to take "traditional" for granted and it feels outdated and dull to us, but it's just that we haven't seen it done in a fresh way. SLB gives us that. I've heard this series has sparked new interest in Indian traditional fashion, dance and music and I am thrilled!
