Something really surprising happened to my feet since wearing barefoot shoes. I've worn minimalist and barefoot shoes for the last 5 years and can't imagine ever going back to wearing "normal" shoes.

I tried this while I was overweight I was trying to get into shape and decide to grab a pair to run with. Bad idea. I collapsed my left arch in my foot. I had to wear orthotics for a year and my foot healed up nicely and I don't have to wear orthotics anymore but I always warn people about it because of how painful those first couple of months were for me. Everyone is different of course and I'm sure it was mainly because of me being overweight but still be careful guys.

@Daniel Paredes it's possible but I have had multiple people tell me it's the only way they can run. I think everyone is so different that what's good for one person may not be for someone else, especially considering different body types and limb proportions.

@Daniel Paredes I mean, I started waking barefoot first, and I got to 30'000 steps daily before I started running. I had no problems until I started running. But I'm 6ft3, and I was 220 lbs at the time. I think I just have a bad body type for it. I mean, I'm lean now 180 lbs but I think I would still have a bad body type for barefoot. With me being so tall I'm basically asking for foot problems.

Many normal shoes prevent this too! Examples are AirForces, certain Jordans, even Nikes 270’s. Either wider shoes, or ones made of light mesh won’t cause much malformation in the toes. I mean I work nearly 12 hours a day (two jobs) and wear 270s everyday of the week for those 12 hours, and my feet look like how they should.

@@hamtaru I had that experience with dress shoes once. I swore to never wear shoes like that ever again. It was straight painful, and it lowkey turned me off of dress shoes completely. I would rather wear some beat up sneaks with a suit than some shiny pointy-toed dress shoes. I care about the health of my feet more than looking the part. If I can do both, great. But if I can only choose one, I choose my feet. Fortunately, I found a way to do it my way and still look good doing it. Did you know that a lot of heritage style work boots can also decently pass as formal dress shoes? They tend to have similar construction, just that work boots are more heavily built. So that's what I go with. I'd prefer a slightly wider toe-box in my Thorogoods, but they do fine overall, and I've even hiked pretty well in them.

Also, what’s beneficial for the feet may not be beneficial for the back, and vice versus. A lot of evolutionary traits end up being a trade-off of cost and reward. When humans evolved to walk upright, we gained some advantages at the cost of joint pain the longer we live. Cushioning in our shoes is something we as humans invented to help curb this evolutionary annoyance, but it comes at the cost of weakening our feet.
@KatieCottingham
@KatieCottingham Жыл бұрын
Please se a physical therapist! Or physiologist depending on where you live. Every PT I've had goes back to the point that we lose core and glute strength, as well as proper adductor strength and control which produces back pain and "weak ankles" due to lack of large muscle support. Every PT I've seen hates barefoot shoes because the research calls the claims quackery and have for over a decade, and their personal experiences as clinicians have shown they do so much more damage than good. Just because we used to walk barefoot in moderate climates, it doesn't mean our bodies were better for it. Cushioned shoes protect joints in ways that barefoot shoes or true barefoot life cannot.

unfortunately, not everyone’s body is capable of supporting them while barefoot :/ i have flat feet and hyper flexibility as a result of osteogenesis imperfecta so after years of breaking my legs and feet I had to eventually get custom orthotic insoles to allow me to walk without crying in pain. I wear orthotic slippers around my house and use a shower chair for the shower (i hate the feeling of flip flops even if they have the arch support). i am grateful that my orthotics gave me the ability to walk for more than just a few minutes, up until i was 17 i used a wheelchair almost everytime i left my house. take care of your feet folks!! remember that pain is your body telling you that something is wrong so if your feet always hurt then something is up!

I completely feel you. when I was in my 20s after over 15 years with auto immune disease, my feet began to hurt all the time while walking and there were not many shoes that made it any better. One morning woke up with searing pain in heel. Found I had a massive ulceration under a very thick callous on my heel. It was so bad the infection found it’s way into the bone. I had to have a surgical debridment, and have a catheter port in my shoulder, to deliver IV antibiotics around the clock for 12 weeks. Then I developed sensitives to the antibiotics after being on for a week or more, so they had to keep switching up the meds. I was so sick through that mess I ended up back in the hospital twice. After that the orthopedic doctor said you must use custom orthotic inserts and they sent me to a prosthetic maker where they made them for me. Changed my life. I could finally walk without pain. I only weighed about 80 lbs at the time, so it was really difficult.

@kiwimiwi5452
@kiwimiwi5452 Жыл бұрын
@@neothepenguin1257 for example in China it used to be a beauty standard to have very small feet. Parents would break their daughters toes and constrict their feet in the smallest shoes possible. And not just their toes, but many other bones in their feet were purposely broken as well, when they were still children. Over time the toes fold underneath and the foot takes on a triangular kind of shape. it looks real nasty, but small feet (..or rather squished ones) were desireable. I believe the last woman who had this done to her had already died of old age, but I may be wrong. but yes, even without breaking all the bones in your foot shoes will, especially since we wear them from baby age onwards, constrict your feet and shape them to what we today think of as normal

(kinda in response to above replies) ....but I usually wear bigger shoes because apparently my feet are weird, and they pretty thick. (at least one of them is;; they're not symmetrical) Also I guess from the first moment I realised most ppl who wore heels had to like break their feet into that position, I thought, No, I don't need heels. And I guess my mom never rly made me wear shoes that were too constricting So I can definitely see ppl who wear non-constrictive shoes actually retain their feet shape (Idk if socks would be a considered factor, but I didn't wear socks outside of school so..... like around 140/175 hrs per week, I would not be wearing socks (and I think I usually wore huge crocs during that time period too))

It’s awesome that you’re athletic and you’ve trained your body and your feet to be the best they can be. my first bone infection was in my heel, because I grew a massive wound under a callous that made its way into the bone. I told my doctor that it felt like I was going to walk through the bottom of my feet. He said you will. Unless we give you corrective orthotics. Childhood onset of severe auto immune disease is no joke and happens more often than you could know. Even if it doesn’t happen until your an adult, it’s still horrific. @@maryannkom299 Swimming is usually the best form of exercise for avoiding injury. If you cant swim they also have the water aerobics classes at the gym. When standing in water the pressure on your joints is lower so you can still increase your cardio vascular health without straining your body too much. I also think not everyone should run because you only get one set of knees and they get injured easily if you are too heavy or run too much with a bad form. For general health usually the people who live healthily into old age are just people who walk alot and I dont feel its necessary to run and especially not for long distances. absolutely! My feet have been flexible and 'handy' all my life but only after starting to wear barefoot shoes I realized I should have always picked a bigger size. In regular shoes it's easier to forget all the balancing and cushioning that the feet are supposed provide and that they need extra room to do it. Still love the sole massage when walking though

I used to wear Converse too and didn't reel especially crammed up in them. But I changed up to vivo barefoot and after 1-2 years my old Converse shoes didn't fit, to the point where they hurt me badly.. You never know until you've tried. You might me crammed up, even if you don't feel like they do. I know it sounds strange, but that's the case for most who have gone over to the barefoot side. Converse all star shoes are actually really small (no width at all).

Exactly, and like the example photo she used was from what, the 1930s when they had pointy shoes that EVERYONE wore. Like babe nowadays we have shoes that are ok to wear, protect your feet, are more comfortable, and support the arch Also I’ve been able to pick stuff up with my feet for my whole life. I think it’s more of a thing you can train, but are usually born with. So lady in the video probably just wore weird toe shoes and tested how strong/flexible her feet where everyday (therefore training them) and drew the conclusion that the shoes did it

@@blumist4332i don't think you're aware of the fact that our feet do not need arch support. We have natural arches that are supposed to be flexible and provide shock absorptiom. Why do people hate their natural foot anatomy so much and insist on sticking with the marketing bullshit about "arch support" and several layers of foam under their feet? Most people also don't understand how natural gait works - most people walk heel strike first, when in actuality, you're supposed to have a mid-strike, which is designed to distribute your weight evenly, hence no need for any stupid artificial arch support that these companies are trying to sell to you 🫠 shocker, out feet are designed to support the weight of our bodies and connected to all tbe other ligaments, muscles and tendons in our body?

This is why you should always buy shoes half a size bigger than you wear. I have very wide feet so for me, finding shoes was a bit more difficult because not all stores carry wide shoes for women. I ended up wearing men's shoes while I was playing sports in middle and high school. I only own about 5 pairs of shoes, each one serving a particular function or style, but I prefer to be barefoot, maybe wearing socks because they don't restrain my feet like most shoes. But if I wanted to keep the natural splay of my feet so much I would just make sure to not wear shoes as often as possible.

Me too actually. My entire family has really wide feet. Everyone’s pinky toes are turned to the side so they can fit in the shoe for the toes. That’s why most of us can’t wear shoes like vans. Even the wider option is sometimes too small. That’s one reason why I couldn’t wear them as a kid because they don’t have a wider option for children.
