More great content, thanks! Another potential option in mixed-level play is to speed up the ball to the more advanced player and slow it down for the less advanced players. Not only does this help improve control, accuracy, pace, and positioning, but also *greatly* lengthens rallies. Beginners really enjoy it when rallies last 20+ strokes!

Very good points about rec. play and hitting to the stronger player, better for you and better experience for your opponents. And you are so right about staying away from uncomfortable shots. I made the decision one day to for the most part to never run around my backhand, it took time but in the long run really worked for me. Thanks, good video.

I was at that same level--having a strategic reason for the placement and type of shot. I started playing this summer at 71. I was progressing nicely until a mussel pull in October sidelined me. Now I watch videos and will hope to get back up to speed quickly in the next few weeks. Watching videos helped me learn to be intentional in any shot I can control.

You might want to check your settings for audio input. It's excellent audio, except for the fact that on this video my left ear gets good volume, but volume coming to right ear is very reduced. I don't remember that happening before from your videos. The audio for the short clip at 7:53 is fine, where you imported the audio from elsewhere. Likewise for the music at the very end. Rode have a useful option to input one channel at reduced volume as a backup in case the loud side is clipped (too loud and distorted). The assumption is the user will choose which channel to finally use and send that one chosen input channel to each output speaker (mono output). So if you choose that reduced volume backup option you need to perform that last step in post. Great video, by the way! I really like your remark to send balls to the better player. Your remark to test limits of your weakness is on point.

I’m so glad you said don’t hit it to the weaker player as a way to improve. Seems like everyone I play with wants to do this and I really like trying to play against better players even though I typically lose in these situations! Now I need more evidence that this helps me get better. Seems like it’s a slow process for me even though I drill, take lessons etc. etc. Also need to ignore advice from partners that have all these bad habits.

Great comment, especially about hitting it to the stronger player always. I've far surpassed people that I started with, and I'm sure this is a major reason why. It has forced me to have to hit accurate drops against slicing/spinning returns, forced me to have to defend against aggressive roll-volleys on drops that I have hit too high, etc. It's important to get punished for mistakes, or you'll never know they were actually mistakes at all! The only thing I'd add is that I never hit 100% of shots to the stronger player, because I don't want the weaker player to think that I think they are weak and I don't want to play with them. I.e. if both the doubles do this, then that weaker player will never get the ball, and it will feel like a game of "keep away". However, I'll make sure to lighten up my shots against the weaker player, so that the rally continues, and if that weaker player leaves one up, I'll just reset it into the kitchen instead of putting it away (unless I "earned" the high-ball by an aggressive dink, etc. Extending rallies like this, and hitting say 80-20, or 70-30 to the stronger player will improve your game faster than anything else.

However you never hit all balls to the best player either. That sucks for the other person equally. I think the idea is more to hit the optimal shot as if both are equal. Don’t evade the best player and test them when you have the opportunity.
@steveb6764
@steveb6764 2 ай бұрын
@@kyler5595. I agree about hitting the optimal shot as if both opponents are equal. The problem is that all things equal the weaker player is always in the weakest position and therefore I keep putting the ball to them. Also, the strong player is at the kitchen with a 90% chance of a put away most likely delivered at my weaker partner. So point over.

Driving the 3rd to set up a 5th shot drop & purposely targeting the stronger opponent are both great ideas & go counter to common rec play concepts that I've been exposed to.
@pickleballplaybook
@pickleballplaybook 6 ай бұрын
I think the most important thing to remember is that when you get into a tournament, you should then be targeting the weaker player. That should be relatively easy considering you now know how to target the better player 🫡
@cwarner5909
@cwarner5909 6 ай бұрын
In lower skill level games I always attempt to engage the better player but most won't mutually return the gesture and pick on my weaker partner. This makes me feel like I'm just hurting my side by feeding the better player although I do agree with playing the better player when they will reciprocate.
@pickleballplaybook
@pickleballplaybook 6 ай бұрын
This can be another hurdle to overcome. The main thing to focus on if this is happening is placing your shots in the most high percentage positions, regardless of who’s weaker and who’s stronger. This will help train the part of your mind that makes decisions in tournament play and will benefit you greatly as well

At 12:05 The Person that won is not the Player that won the Match but the Player who learned the most and improved the most. I have added this to my Quotable Quotes. At our Open Drop In's we typically pair Strong (S) + Weak (W) vs Strong (S) + Weak (W) but often the Weaker Players get targeted and can't keep up. Stronger Players want to win the Game so they don't spend the entire Session in the Non-Winner Bracket. A better solution we are trying to incorporate is S + S vs W + W with the cavet that the goal of S + S is to keep each Rally going as long as possible. We have found that the Weaker Players improve more rapidly and have a more satisfying game (learning and improving). The S + S end up in the Winners Bracket and get the opportunity to play against another S + S so they also end up having a challening match. With this Protocol everyone has the opportunity to Learn and Improve :)

Yes both should. Then it comes down to who hits the middle ball on the opposing team that decides who should take the middle ball. Don't forget your brain! I really enjoy content here and especially the explanations of what to do and WHY. BUT........the most neglected part of pickle ball is the mental part. This is not strategy or shot selection. Its the inner struggle that goes on between your ears. I was reluctant to read books about this thinking I'm not that cerebral. But it was so liberating to understand that the mental side to my game was holding me back more than techniques. My enjoyment of the game doubled and that I felt a 25% improvement without even stepping onto the court. Good books? The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Tim Gallawey (Don’t let the "T" word throw you. You'll see why as you read it.) and Mindset: A mental guide for Sport by Reardon and Dekkers. Don't like or have time to read? Find the audiobooks. I found them on Libby and Amazon.

3:34 "the ball doesn’t have to bounce prior"? I do not understand. This sounds like a contradiction of what was just said: that you cannot volley (hit it out of the air) while standing in the kitchen. I am trying to learn, and this has me confused. Did you just mis-speak, because what was said just before matched my understanding?
@pickleballplaybook
@pickleballplaybook 5 ай бұрын
Not sure I understand your question but to explain the non volley zone misconception further: People think you can’t stand in there. You absolutely can and it’s 100% legal. Many people also think that in order for them to be legally able to step into the non volley zone they need to let the ball bounce. This is also not true. There’s one thing you can’t do in the non volley zone, and that is hit the ball out of the air. Feel free to lay down in it, dance in it, play in it. Just don’t hit the ball out of the air in it 🙌

"In order for them to be legally able to step into the non volley zone they need to let the ball bounce" is not true? Is your point that you can legally step into the kitchen BEFORE the ball bounces, but you MUST THEN wait for the ball to bounce before hitting it? I sense that I just answered my own question, but would appreciate you telling me I did and was just being dense, or picky on the wording. 👍

I agree to hit to the stronger player but I want to challenge the weaker player to improve as well. Mix it up so that everyone improves. That’s what makes the sport so enjoyable.

it amazes me that most players don't wear eye protection. i was hit on the wrist by a smash and it really hurts; cannot imagine if it would have hit me in the eye.

This is why I don’t find pickleball fun. Every little detail has to be perfect. I played badminton for years and it was always a great time laughing and having fun with friends. Pickleball I find just the opposite because everyone is so serious about every little shot and you better do it right or not make a mistake or you’ll get the glare because they just have to WIN

You need to find a better group to play with! Pickleball is the fastest growing sport cause it’s such a fun time with your buddies! Don’t play with people that are can’t have a bit of fun while playing

Don't hit every single shot to the better player, because then you aren't learning correct shot selection. Its better to target openings (poor coverage), dominant hips and backhands and forget about who is better so that you aren't practicing wrong, and you remain less predictable. The challenge is to "forget" who is better, and always ask, "what is the best target in this case".
@steveb6764

I agree with you. I hit the smartest shot to the most vulnerable spot on the court. That of course is almost always the same as targeting the weaker player. As a result, the better player, will need to step in and covers the whole kitchen, which gets him into the game. Now the better player gets a chance to cover the whole kitchen which is great and challenges his reflexes to get better. As the better player myself, stepping in and taking those shots has allowed me to improve at coverages. I keep data. When I poach I win 96% of my games, when I don’t poach and allow them to target the weaker player, my win rate dives to 10-30% depending on how weak the partner is.

I think winning is for sure important. Wanting to win and striving to win will help you perform better in tournaments. But if it comes down to you having to hit to the weaker player to do so, you’ve lost!
