I love monkeys. Not like “LOVE” love, but more of a healthy admiration. I also love my Shapton Pro’s too. I picked up a 3 pack (320, 1k & 5K) then added the 220 & 2k. In retrospect, I probably didn’t need the 220 and 5K since I only really use the 1k. The 320 was enough to fix a neglected edge and the 2K was supposed to be for my wife’s kitchen knives. After watching the way she treats them tho, the 1K is all she gets now! Lol

It's ok, you just need 2000, 3000, 5000, 8000, 12000, 20000 and 32000 wet stones from trusted japan brand and a quality leather strope with 1micron paste. I believe that you need 10 to 30h of muscle memory sharpening free hand to really master your angles, gestures and feedback from stone (= not fucking all you did with wrong moves). Then you'll get orgasm for each cut through a vegetable.. then you'll start nerding about cutting board, start woodworking, making cutting board, increase tooling, building knife, then forging knife, then back to knife-making from blanks. You'll get addicted to sharpening everything you can even if you use 2% of your knives,chisels,etc.. you'll become an amateur cook and allergic to touch a knife that you did not sharpen. You'll end up drunk, naked under your diy pure leather trench coat with all your wet stone attached on the inside writing dumb comment on youtube... 🥺😘

Stopping down your aperture will increase the depth of what is in focus. That of course lets less light through the lens, but if you can get some more light on the subject with a ring light or an additional external flash, that could help open up your depth of focus. I've done a good bit of macro photography and trust me, I know the struggle you are dealing with. I like the rail mount you have. oh and dude... I have a wicked edge and I get knives SUPER sharp, but I've never seen a knife go through a paper towel like that. Anyone who has never tried to cut through a paper towel like that doesn't understand how sharp that knife had to be...

Another thing you can do is focus stacking, where you take a series of pictures with the focal plane moving back with each photo. These images can then be combined in something like Photoshop to give you a deeper depth of field.

Hey Alex, I usually use cheapo knives, and used angle grinder with weared down flap disk + polishing compound plus bench grinder with MDF wheel to sharpen them gently. It is fast, but it is not precise, and its also can soften the edge... (I just feel that my knifes deserves better than that) After watching all your videos, i decided to buy the first two stones (Shapton Kuromaku 1000,2000) as my birthday present to myself. I think i will use sandpaper+glass as a coarse one, until i can buy some kind of diamond plate for profiling. I newer tought that i will ever use whetstones, before your videos! :) Keep up the good work!

Awesome to see you dive into the Shapton stones, I've been using them for years (both bench and guided systems) and they are by far my favorites. Also, totally get the 12,000. I use it every time I sharpen, it avoids needing to strop nearly as much, you can start with 1 micron compound.
@jeffhicks-wo1ty Жыл бұрын
they're okay for low alloy and chromium steels, as they are an alumina abrasive, and for doing edges, as they are known for being very hard and very minimally friable stones. for wider bevels they are lacking. the scratches are not on the same level as even the glass line from the same maker, which is a slighter less hard, more friable stone which leaves much more even scratches and generally works faster. The glass series was designed to be more like the naniwa chosera stones. Neither of these works good for vanadium alloyed steels though. Even something "basic" and common like s35vn will skate over these stones feeling like glass. The resulting edge is always lacking and it takes forever to grind. Woodworkers love these stones because of how hard and minimally friable they are, yet they still cut extremely well as long as you're not talking about vanadium steels.

New subscriber here. I've been wanting to pick up a set of sharpening stones to get my axes, knives, and tools sharpened but I'm be to ask this. The sharpton seems like a good value stone from your videos but what do you recommend for someone just getting into sharpening? I'm thinking about the 4 diamond stone set from honoson that you reviewed the dual sided one the other day but I like the idea of a traditional wet/oil stone better. I also thought it would be fun to find a hone rockhounding but I've had some trouble trying to find good information about what kind of stone to look for. Anyway great video! I'm super impressed that you get those images without a microscope. I thought for sure you were doing it with one. I worked with a piece of laboratory equipment that we took high res images of metals for metalography but that's really cool to see you camera setup. It's crazy what they can do these days.

@Bigtexbbq Жыл бұрын
Like the man said a solid set with diamond stone and a good 1000 grit is a good start. Other than that, just getting what you can and starting somewhere is really the best thing you can do. I picked up the cheap $20 set off amazon “400,1000,3000,8000” and started learning on them. Came with the stones, a holder, leather stop, little leveling stone, not a bad kit for $20. I sharpened a bunch of pocket knives and my nice chef knife that was dull as a butter knife for about 4 hours straight the other day. He reviewed the same kind of stuff a little while ago, they aren’t very good for getting consistent performance. But definitely worth investigating if you decide you’d like to pursue sharpening as a hobby or skill. Grabbed the 1000, 2000, 5000 shapton stones that he recently posted for when I feel like I have an idea of what to do. Then I can sharpen my skills further on better stones. Hoping I can get my techniques down pretty good to where I wear out the cheap stones and can really do well with the quality stones. Edit: I wouldn’t suggest getting cheap stones if you can afford even one quality stone. It’s just what I am doing.

thanks for the video and explanations. I have many of the Sharpton stones, and lots of others too. I am not crazy about sharpening knives, but I am crazy about sharpening chisels, planes and gouges. I'm certainly not as knowledgeable as you are, but I think I'm getting pretty good. I've been hand sharpening for many years, and have it down pretty well. Obviously with chisels and Planes there are guides and jigs to use, that do an incredible job. For gouges, you really have to learn to hand sharpen. (not necessary for wood turning gouges, but helps there too) All this is interesting.

Do you think if monkey were able to use tools as well as we do, that they would love to have sharp knives? Question, how longes does the sharpness last? I'm in a bit of a pickle, i sharpen my mom's and pop's knives, but they are the kinda people to throw them in a draw rather than hang them, so I'm looking for a way to give them sharp knives while also don't need to sharpen them each weekend, cuz they lose the edge by bumping on each other in the draw. Great vid, and thank you for your dedication and content.
@joshuaanderson7511 Жыл бұрын
Sharpen them with a convex edge and give the edge a steep final angle Easier said then done, but the shape and angle of the edge is just as important as the steel on the knife- if it's cheap kitchen knife "stainless" steel it just won't last no matter what. The best you can do is get the edge super steep and thick so that it lasts longer under abuse and get the edge fine enough that it will cut produce. I doubt they would complain about their knives not having mirror polish while they chop up a jalapeño. And further than that you can do blade maintenance on them by stropping and honing the blades on occasion. Or show them how since that part is really easy and makes a big difference.

Hello, Alex! Thank you for another great video ("I love monkeys", just so you know.) This video made me want to buy more stones. I've already bought the Shapton 1000 AND the 1500, which I haven't even tried yet (I will). I usually use my *really* cheap amazon diamond plates to sharpen. I even use them to dress edges, like on a hand plane or when deburring an edge. I smooth & polish side edges, like on a plane, chisel back, or spokeshave iron. Anywhere its a flat, square edge. The 1st set was $20 (400, 1000, & 1200, 2.48"x5.9") the 2nd set was $13. Since they were cheap I don't really value them like the Shaptons or DMT diamond plates. I seldom hone anything to a mirror finish any more, I apply the Paul Sellers point; Do it enough to work & get back to work. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

Photography: have a wide variety of focusing rails come out your camera you can possibly look into a better setup and make sure that your tripod is quality solid to prevent vibration. Eliminating bump and shake when taking a picture you can either do a shutter delay timer then it takes the phone in whatever allotted seconds you choose. Also for the camera you can buy a wire or wireless remote shutter control so you don't have to push the button on the camera.

@edwardlance2379 Жыл бұрын
The close up photography is known as "macro". I play with macro and use a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens. It too will shoot at 5x. As mentioned, you need a macro rail on your tripod to use it effectively because the depth of field is so incredibly tiny. If you shoot macro handheld, you typically don't try it at 5x as that's near impossible. 1x or 2x maybe at the most can be done by hand. 3x is possible if you haven't had your morning coffee and your subject is static, but it's very difficult. Since these lenses have no automated features, you also need a lot of light to keep shutter speeds fast to avoid motion blur. In a way, they are counter intuitive as you also want large F-stop settings to increase depth of field, but that in turn requires more light for proper exposure. These lenses and associated equipment are not cheap. The Canon MP-E 65mm lens, for example, is over $1,000 (new). The macro flash unit I use (Canon MT-26EX-RT) is also right at $1,000. A good macro rail will set you back $500+ and a good quality tripod another $250+ As for tripping the shutter, when doing extreme macro you can use a remote trigger, or just use the timer on the camera. I typically use my timer set at 2 seconds to avoid any shake or movement.

the 120, 220 and 320 are the course aka grinding stones. The 220 and 320 are SIC. All others in this line are alumina. the 1000 (more like a 600 or 800) 1500 (more like real 1000) and 2000 are the medium aka sharpening stones. the 5000, 8000 and 12000 are the finishing/polishing stones. You NEED ONLY ONE OF EACH STONE to have a set. The ones I suggest are the 120, 320, 1k, 2k, 5k and the 12k. 8k and 12k are interchangeable, the 8k was designed for high end kitchen knives whereas the 12k was designed for woodworkers, so says the manufacture, but they say a lot of rubbish. I like the 12k and use it for kitchen knives and other things. These stones are known for being very hard, slow wearing and very minimally friable making very little mud. yet they still cut very well for low alloy and chromium steels. Where they lack is wider bevels, polishing and vanadium alloy steels. The scratches for wider bevels and polishing are not in the same league as the glass series or naniwa chosera.

First time viewer here. Maybe you mention this in a previous video on your channel, but is there a reason to not be using any water on the stones? Is it a bad thing to use water on a stone when sharpening/honing blades?
