I didn't think Sarah Lynn's death could be any more tragic, but your break down doesn't miss a single crack. I did not catch the "bear fur" comment nor did I realize her step-father was one. Her last words were already haunting, because they're so childlike and innocent. It's like what a kid would say when you ask the "What do you want to be when you grow up?" but she never had that option.
@OsKarMike13065 жыл бұрын
I feel like it's even more poignant to realise that her last words are the exact answer to this question, it encapsulates everything about Sarah Lynn's life: how she didn't get to do what she wanted, how she never had a proper childhood and how she never actually grew up.

That is the tragic life of Sarah Lynn the painting of her as Ophelia is a beautifully sad reminder that she was weighed down after what felt like a wonderful high. She was collapsing into herself with no way out. Eventually she would have been swallowed by her pain and addiction
@breadcrumbhoarder5 жыл бұрын
Haunting fact about the Ophelia painting: the model who posed for the original version of this painting was lying in a cold bath tub for hours so the artist could paint her, never complaining because she needed the money to support her family. By the time she got out of the bathtub she was extremely sick, and her doctor prescribed laudanum (basically opium) so she could cope with the pain. She became addicted to the opium, lived a terrible life because her husband was shit, and then she died young because of an opium overdose. The model’s life and Sarah Lyn’s are like mirrors to each other, both being forced to do something that led to drug addiction and death, whoever thought to put that painting in Sarah Lyn’s room must’ve been an art historian and a genius.

you should never "kill off" a character just to get rid of them. death should impact other characters in specific ways.
@jaycemcqueen3063 жыл бұрын
This is what writers always get wrong. You generalize the “killing off of a character just to get rid of them” too much. Death happens at random and suddenly it doesn’t always need deep meaning. It should do something for the story or characters in a way, but you shouldn’t always be making a character that has to be killed off only to impact a character in a specific way. My bestselling novel series has gotten good reviews and responses to the very real form of death shown.

There's a lot of talk lately about "Subverting expectations" and "Creating twists that the audience can't see coming" lately and I'm glad that you pointed out how it's completely possible to have a meaningful impact on the audience while still staying firmly within expectations and that a writer doesn't need to rely on twists to shock us. I remember there was a point in the episode where Bojack is pouring his heart out to Sarah Lynn and she's laying very quiet and still on the bed and I thought "Oh, she must have ODed" Only for her to wake up a few seconds later and say she's bored. They telegraphed how very possible and probable it was that Sarah Lynn would die minutes before it actually happened and yet I still stared at the screen completely blown away with shock and sorrow when it happened in the exact way I thought it would.
@SolvNia3 жыл бұрын
I think a nice example for character death and subverting expectations was Mami Tomoe from Madoka Magica. Viewers went into the show thinking they'll see a cutesy magical girl-anime thanks to the art style and well, because magical girl-animes are harmless by default. However, there were a few early hints that implied otherwise: The antagonists of the show had an unusually nightmarish design, mentions of suicide and Mami herself urged Madoka to really consider if she wants to become a magical girl, because it's not as easy as it looks. Then she got her head chomped off by one of the monsters she was fighting. And the tone of the series shifted dramatically from there. The girls who witnessed it were pretty much traumatized and immediately abandoned their idea of picking up her lifestyle. The world itself suddenly seemed more bleak and hopeless, and even if you had a glimmer of hope at some point, it was snuffed out almost immediately. But what really sets this apart from other "shock moments" is that Mami is still being treated with respect afterwards. She wasn't a nameless girl who was killed off for shock value and shifting the tone. It's later established how she was one of the very few altruistic girls in this "profession", she became a role model for one of the characters and characters still talk about her long after she died. We even get some additional character development for her later on in the form of flashbacks.

@megannicole49275 жыл бұрын
Sarah Lynn's death was so devastating. When BoJack and Wanda start dating, Kelsey Jannings tells Diane that every celebrity has an age of stagnation. They stop growing once they've hit a certain level of fame. For Sarah Lynn, that age was when she was a child. She didn't progress emotionally or in maturity past whatever very young age it was when she made it big on Horsing Around. Following the downfall of her fame, she was stuck in a perpetual state of childhood, using drugs and alcohol to keep afloat because she most likely wasn't able to come to terms with why she stopped being successful. Mentally she was forever that little kid in the dressing room who wanted to be an architect, which makes her death all the more sad. She never got a chance to grow up as she should have. I feel like this makes her story relatable not only to anyone who feels trapped in the entertainment industry, but to victims of childhood abuse who also didn't get to grow up properly and are stuck trying to fulfill a childhood they never had. Sarah Lynn's death was a kick to the stomach because she will never get the chance to be better. There was hope at the end of the episode just before she died and now there's nothing. It was flawlessly done but incredibly painful and unfair.

Amazing job and worth the wait! Ive been rewatching Bojack and im about mid season 4. Sarah Lynn's death rocked me to my core the first time, but I did expect it. Upon the recent rewatch though, what had caused the impact is the flashback to Bojack seeing her after her concert to pitch her the Bojack Horseman Show. That ended so terribly between them that the next time they see each other is when she shows up in season 1. With everything you've talked about and with season 5 being hailed as the best meta commentary of the show, i wish someone would talk about how they did meta commentary in season3, they just didn't make everything in the season tied to it, just a few characters. Agreed, apart from the whole grosses of someone dying as a way of escape (which I think the writers are aware of the optics of that) bojack isn't a show about having someone who harms others and seeing no way around it other then a quick conclusion. It's about coming to accept that there is no fixing the harm you've done. Just acknowledgment of it and finding a way of making sure it never happens again. It's hilarious how even Voldemort seems horrified by Umbridge in that picture.

Death is what gives us meaning. Yes, it's very scary to know you can go at any time of the day but it is not the death that you should fear it's acknowledging it and living with it. Not to sound harsh. Life is meant to redirect you constantly but it is up to you to set your mind on the path that you want.
