When I read the book, years ago, ‘The Case for Christ’ there was a very helpful (to me) statement in it that I’ve never forgotten: The bible is not an ‘authoritative list of books’ but a ‘list of authoritative books’. I found that distinction very helpful. Regarding Esther, in my own mind, I sometimes ask, ‘Does the Holy Spirit work ‘overtly’ or ‘covertly’. I personally suspect it is both. Have you ever had someone charismatic give you, officially ‘a word of knowledge’? If you’re like me you have but are as likely to have had someone say something that seemed to be ‘straight from God’ for which no such overt clarification that it came from God was attached-maybe the speaker seemed even unaware that they were delivering to you such a clearly ‘for you’ message… I think God works with a mighty arm and outstretched hand (His hand being disclosed as it were as in Exodus). Equally though He operates by stealth when we say, God was ‘in that’ somehow (unannounced). That’s what Esther signifies to me… the God who is always working even to this day (though perhaps in ways, at times, mysteriously covert).
