I live in Cancun and you should definitely go to Puerto Aventuras, it’s between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and if you do go, try the burgers that are next to a gas station right outside the entrance

You're correct, forgot to describe them. They're pretty much swimming holes in the ground. They're all over this part of Mexico. Over 6,000! They're formed when the roof of a cave falls in

Natural rainwater is usually very slightly acidic, and limestone is generally chemically basic, so over time the water dissolves the limestone, thereby creating the conditions for a sinkhole to form. Where there is a capstone of some sort over the limestone, caves in the limestone can form (a great example of this is Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, which has a sandstone cap over the dissolved/dissolving limestone layer).
