Great to see this video having met you only a week ago ! Stenosis is a tricky problem and presents in so many ways. Expertise is much required and a genuine approach to decide if surgery is the best approach for the individual.

I bawled like a baby when I found out I needed surgery. But I'm fortunate to know something like 3-4 people who have had the same procedure--and they all said that it was the best thing for them and they'd do it again in a heartbeat. That helped me feel a tad bit better. I hope you're coping with it now Anita; now that I've resolved to get this surgery I'm kinda just hoping to get in as soon as possible. I hope you feel better.

Just home from this operation what a difference this is my 3rd back op in 10 years . The excruciating pain has gone, months of agony disappeared over night , now I have to take it carefully. I would recommend anyone to have this operation .

I have a question in order to do the surgery correctly you have to remove the back part of the spine exposing the nerve to muscle tissue. do you guys put any kind of protection over the spinal cord afterwards or is that area open I can imagine having a sudden blow to the back around that area and damaging the spinal cord because there's no longer any protection around it it terrifies me please talk to me about it.

Generally, no (but see "open door laminoplasty" for cervical myelopathy). If it is a complete laminectomy, you will have a hole, but it will be covered by the muscle on top of it. Sometimes fat is added as a cushion in the resulting hole, in order to protect the nerves. The bone is drilled away and ground up, so there is no way to re-attach it. For this reason, they try and make the smallest hole possible and use smaller implements to get to the area that need to be decompressed. But sometimes it may not be possible and the whole lamina must be removed. Laminectomy has been practiced for over 100 years. The consequences of removing this bone and surrounding ligaments are well understood. The main thing surgeons worry about is removing too much bone and ligament and destabilizing the spine. For that reason, a fusion is often done with a large laminectomy or removal of facet joints. Note that below L2, there is no spinal cord; only fine lumbar roots, which have some room to sway around. So it is not the same has removing the lamina in the neck where the spinal cord is thick like a carrot.
