I think is hard to think that we just write for ourselves Because Tbh We wont come back to read our stories just because we like them Im pretty sure we always want to share our stories

#12 about rejecting the first idea. I love this, I feel like our creativity can be like a deep well. Often the stuff floating on top is really just something we saw before StoryGrid podcast guys talked about this, too, and said "It's usually idea 11 or 12 that's something original" I don't feel like that's true for many of us, but for them to reject the first 10 ideas is the most severe version I've heard of this haha

Thanks Ken! Agreed, that is really good advice. I can tell because it slightly scares me! I feel like I don't have that many ideas, but maybe that's the point, perhaps I'll find them by looking harder?

Thank you. When I taught writing in elementary school, I used a 5-finger formula similar to Pixar's. It works for any writer of any age: Somebody--wanted--but--so--then. It's a bit simpler, but it does the job.

Thanks for sharing the tips & your thoughts on them. Also, congrats on the finished book and all the best with releasing it. Of all the 'writing advice youtubers' that I can think of, I'm most interested in your novel, and will look forward to checking it out. You have a humility about writing craft that means I couldn't care less if there's that page where you didn't take your own advice and used a dreaded adverb. :P You've never come across to me in any of your videos as though you're trying to reach down from some place of higher talent and educate us poor amateurs (as some advice givers sometimes do). There's a real sense that the goal is to share information, to chat about writing, to encourage, and for ALL of us to try to improve together. I think if anyone gets upset at any imperfections in your novel, they've managed to somehow miss what I'd call the central theme of your channel. Anyway, more importantly, if you don't mind sharing, what's the tattoo on your arm? :D I've watched enough of your videos for it to be familiar now, but I still haven't managed to figure out the detail.

Thank you so much, this is one of the best comments I think I've had on this channel! This is exacttly how I hope to make viewers feel, so it's really great to know I'm getting that across. Thanks so much for letting me know that. I don't have a picture of it uploaded anywhere, but my tattoo is a jettisoned astronaut drifting through space. Behind them is a triangle cutout of the galaxy with bits of debris and sci-fi-ish line work. Then there's a couple of bands around my whole forearm :)

Hi Kieren, just found your channel and hit subscribe straight away! I'm working my way througha nd love your take on different areas of writing. I'm just embarking on my very first book (just in the outlining phase, to be honest). One thing I'm struggling with at the moment is my antagonist, who is definitely the villain. It's occured to me yesterday that I needed to start with her, the protagonist has nothing to do without her. But, what I'm looking for is some sound advice on a making a compelling antagonist. I know it's just a character like any other, but would love some advice specifically on this perspective. So, if you are looking for video ideas, I've not found anyone who has done this well 😉. Hi Adele, thanks so much for subscribing! That's a really good idea, everyone loves a good, layered villain. Truth be told, I think I've only really written a few villains, so I'd probably need to brush up a bit before tackling that topic. I'll try to put something together for the future.

I write what comes to my heart. Fussing to appease everyone will never work. No author has ever got 5 stars from everyone. Fans will people who you my work not a list of rules from some professor. I don't look at reviews either.
