As a ttrpg guy that started with PF1e I would say that Starfinder is more a a mid point between PF1e and PF2e. They made the system while developing PF2e, and the precoursoury DNA of PF2e is quite evident to those more familiar with the two systems. Your point still stands, of course. In fact, it might make the eventual conversion of PF2e into CRPG form even more likely. Just putting my 2 cents in for the algorithm. 😉👍 ~ Adam

@@ShadowKatt I can agree with that. When Starfinder first came out we played it over some of it on my channel, and it really needed more time in the oven. The bones of the system were good, but the whole thing needed fleshing out a bit more. It was fun, but janky. They might have fixed some of that jank with errata by now though. I'd have to look at the actual rules again to be sure. They setting was a lot of fun though. ~ Adam

I could easily see Starfinder having a video game adaptation, there's all the great trappings of a spaced based adventure and a mixture of fantasy and magic. I think the best part of Starfinder to make it seem different is the mix of space and fantasy. There have many fantasy cRPGs and a few pure sci-fi but Starfinder does have a mix. Like mages with sniper rifles or a dragon men wielding laser swords. Side note: I play a bit of Starfinder and Solarion is also my favourite class. Rather than being a cleric I see them as more a paladin or maybe a bit of jedi. They definitely hit like trucks.

What do you think about the balancing in the owlcat pathfinder games? I've been a bit put off by the fluctuations between steamrolling and getting steamrolled. Kinda sucks that for some fights you have to die to the enemy once to learn their weaknesses/stats. And besides that there seems to be an expectation that you just run around with buffs applied all the time.

After playing StarFinder at least twice, I'd say it's about time StarFinder got a Video Game adaptation. The way I imagine the game working is, that you (Your custom character) and your crew would explore the galaxy (at least the Pact Worlds) and take on different quests and recruit different people depending on the planet you are on. You can obtain not only weapons, armour, energy shields and all types of equipment but, you can also obtain different vehicles such as Hover Cars, Hover Bikes, Star Fighters, Starships, Mechs, etc. The combat would work in a very similar manner to X-Com as I believe that would be the best way to showcase all of the racial and class abilities that StarFinder has to offer (the same thing could be said for mech combat). Starship combat could work in a similar fashion except tweeked to account for other vehicles such as star fighters and mechs. Even if OwlCat games would not be able to make this game, I can think of a few other studios that could be capable of making such a game. Firaxis Games is a prime candidate as they have made X-Com: Enemy Within and X-Com 2: War Of The Chosen. My 2nd studio of choice would be Snapshot Games as they have made Phoenix Point, a game that is a spiritual successor to X-Com. My 3rd studio of choice would be Splash Damage as they have created Gears Tactics in partnership with The Coalition. Finally, my 4th studio of choice would be Complex Games as they have created WarHammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemon Hunters. These are just some of my thoughts and ideas. Hopefully, there will be a StarFinder game in the near future.

A bit of wishful thinking, maybe. But I would adore this. Just thinking about Harebrained Schemes' Shadowrun games, which were such a breath of fresh air in the usual fantasy themed cRPG niche, though I'd say they were fairly basic if you compare them to the depth and detail of the Pathfinder games by Owlcat. A futuristic setting like that would be amazing and there would be so many cool things to explore. The animal companions could be different drones like you mention, or entirely different alien species, maybe a xenomorph-like creature, maybe something cloned that could be customized even further with mix-and-match bodyparts which would allow you to create a support creature, or a tank, or a DPS one. And then there's the management aspect that has been in every Pathfinder game so far and has gotten very mixed reactions. If they let you build up your own ship as a sort of stronghold that could be cool and there's precedent for that in XCOM or in the Battletech game by Harebrained Schemes. Especially if there was an option to go multiple ways, letting you be a space-pirate, or a mercenary, an interstellar ambassador or maybe a trader or smuggler, each path requiring you to build specific components of your spaceship, focusing on shields and weapons for the warlike options or maybe speed, evasion and cargo-space for the trader route. On the other hand they could do something like with Wrath of the Righteous and create a large-scale space army management system. Something like Stellaris or Master of Orion where you have to conquer and defend planetary sites and space-stations. There are so many fresh new things to consider. But again, all just wishful thinking at this point. A fun direction to think about for sure.
@faylinnmystiquerose22242 жыл бұрын
Generally in Starfinder, you do have the option of kitting out your own starship, limited by build points though, and there are certain key systems that every starships needs, like the reactor, engines, and the drift engine too, in fact starships are highly customisable.

A few months back there was a supposed leak of an in-progress Starfinder cRPG from a company that did support work on the Pathfinder Kingmaker cRPG, with concept art that was impossible to mistake for anything but Starfinder...But it turned out to be a false alarm (the company in question had a sketchy track record with other companies' intellectual properties), and they've been MIA since. And before that, Owlcat were looking to hire artists on some kind of sci-fi project, which could damn well have been a Starfinder video game, but it's not confirmed either way. Regardless, a Starfinder video game would be *amazing* - and there are many fun Adventure Paths to build one around (since Owlcat at least tends to adapt existing storylines rather than create wholecloth new ones) - like Attack of the Swarm! (military campaign against the insectile Swarm hvemind), Dawn of Flame (takes place INSIDE the Pact Worlds' Sun!) or Fly Free or Die (morally grey space truckers on the run from a vengeful megacorporation). Also, Starfinder the TTRPG does have a complete starship combat system, but it works very differently from the rest of the game, is kinda clumsy for most people, and is generally one of the most polarizing aspects of it - however, it could be incredible with some tweaks and automation of a video game, especially if it hewed similar to video games like FTL: Faster Than Light, which are a masterclass in handling that kind of tactical ship combat. And hey, Owlcat went with their own take on Mythic Paths in WotR different from TTRPG Pathfinder 1e's Mythic, so surely they could overhaul starship combat for a Starfinder cRPG as well. (Lastly, the Drift Crisis that you mentioned is not so much a single Adventure Path but an entire game-wide metaplot-esque event that's affecting the whole game setting, and has several upcoming APs and other products - that too could be a great basis for a video game, though it is literally just now starting and could be a bit jarring to an audience that hasn't yet been introduced to Starfinder's baseline setting and concepts, and it's unlikely that Owlcat or any other developer would have it in advance unless they were just now starting to work on a video game adaptation, which would take at least a year or two to come to fruition.)

Owlcat definitely seems like a good fit. But if they were to adapt their systems into a Starfinder game, I wonder how they would deal with aggro in a setting that seems to be more about ranged weapons. Like most enemies in Owlcat's Pathfinder games are melee fighters that run at your party so you just put your tanky characters in front of your squishy characters to intercept them. It wouldn't work the same if everybody attacked from range. I'm thinking more Shadowrun or Wasteland than Pathfinder.

One thing I have always loved the idea of is taking the enemies from a future tech based game and using them against the high fantasy style players. Something like a high tech but no magic invader showed up eons ago and tried to take over but between the gods and magic, they actually lost. I feel it would help explain some of the "previous super civilization that collapsed" tropes by having the places be former bases or crashed ships from an ancient war rather than just having a super advanced society being wiped out by a problem you can't think of because they were so advanced they should have been able to handle anything.
@iandevine30632 жыл бұрын
I think this would be a bad idea, this isn't EA where they can just put out an IP have it flop and be totally good, putting out something that sells nothing could be detrimental. I think they should just stick with what they do very well. I just don't know how well a space pathfinder would do i guess.

I've played/dm'd starfinder games and it's by far my favourite ttrpg. Theres just so many ways you can take it. On a galactic level you can do big important stories about empires and the like, but I found telling closer, nitty gritty stories to be more exciting. It was a lot easier for new people to grasp the lore and universe when they experienced it in small chunks rather than be expected to know how all the main races/factions across the entire galaxy interact with each other. I would be so ecstatic to see a video game adaptation!

Curious as to whether Starfinder goes into the depth of Pathfinder with things like greater cleave, metamagic, prepared vs spontaneous casters, and all of the dozens of support feats and prerequisites? That stuff was fun to theory craft but ultimately prevented me from getting very far in WotR. (petered out in act 3 pretty consistently) Stacking buffs, debuff checks and a versatile party that is still incapable of ever hitting an enemy is just not fun. I'd love to see a system that removes the bloat by folding advanced feats into the basic prerequisites and using level reqs to grow them automatically. So if you take cleave at level 3, it is basic cleave and when you hit level 6 and 9 it becomes improved and greater cleave automatically. Likewise, if you wait until level 9 to take cleave, it is greater cleave at that point. The current system of nested prerequisites only makes you wait to see if the build is viable while this proposed system would less messed up builds and would allow you to fix them to some degree. I really do want to see more sci fi rpgs. And while I am aware that sci fi doesn't sell as well as fantasy, to my knowledge, HBS Battletech did very well.

Sf being so close to 1e pf in game mechanics is a big no for many: - plenty of people tried 2e after playing sf and said there is no way going back -some mechanics in sf were prototypes in between going to 2e but unfortunately didnt live to expectation -sf was a rushed product as the other choice was a Bestiary 6 I believe, and that was coming from the publishers mouth,they thought they have enough time for everything but in doing so released a buggy mess of a game that is still being erratad -there is a reason why sf players hate and skip starship combat,gunner fires,pilot flyies ship,everyone else repair ship and shields-rinse and repeat,one other reason is the number of actual starship encounters in APs is extremely small in regards to normal encounters and are mostly used as a A to B transport between quests then actual sci-fi starships(enterprise,millennium falcon,rocinante etc) -ground combat is still static -full ranged attacks and five foot steps -class balance is all over the place, One class is king, the Operative,he does whatever you can do but better I love sci fi games like the other nerds but sometimes not everything has to come from one company ( stars without number,traveller,expanse rpg,dune,shadowrun,star wars genesys,star trek adventures, twilight imperium ,xia etc I would suggest actually playing above, including pf 2e,sf and pf 2e with some friends and actually looking at what each offers does best Happy gaming,love the channel ,keep it up ;-)

As soon as Wrath of the Righteous reached a stable enough state to allow Owlcat to start work on a new project, a Starfinder game became my immediate hope as their next licensed adaptation :-) While I really like the Starfinder core rule book and would definitely love to see Owlcat adapt it into CRPG form, I have to admit that my hope is actually more pragmatic than just wanting to see something I enjoy get the Owlcat treatment! For reasons that I can't imagine, CRPGs set in space are criminally rare! Aside from Colony Ship (being developed by the Devs of Age of Decadence), the only spacefaring CRPGs that I can even think of are KotOR 1&2, which is nuts! I'm sure there's an argument to be made to call the Mass Effect games, Harebrained Schemes' BattleTech, the recently released Daemonhunters, and the Planescape games CRPGs, but I personally don't view them that way. We need more spacefaring CRPGs, and an Owlcat lead Starfinder adaptation is our best chance at seeing that happen :-)

Been playing a Starfinder game for a couple years now (LV1-LV18, so far) Like most TTRPG to Video Game translations, it will have to rely on either on a great story, or a very open world. The later would be hard to do well, due to the vastness of the setting. So I think it would really come down to having a compelling narrative to follow. The system would just end up being flavor. If I were to try and market a StarFinder Video Game I would try to tie the story to The Gap in some way. Maybe revel a few mysteries. It would really pull people in. Maybe have the game even start in Pathfinder, or make it a sequel to the existing game, so you could carry a player over. As for my experience with the system, ship Combat is a bit weak, and wouldn't be desirable to directly translate into a Video Game in my opinion (this could be a fault of the game we are playing). I do agree there needs to be some focus on ships. Personally, I would like to see an even more fleshed out system added into a Video Game. Alternatively, it could be done like the Guardians of the Galaxy video game, where its a home base, with a few minigames thrown in to remind you you are in space. Either way, I would like to see a change from the current TTRPG system.

Namely some spcific classes that are quite interesting, and many, many, MANY race to choose from (none of the more interesting ones are in the core rulebook in my opinion, but you can find them all for free on the Archives of Nethys). You got mixed up a little bit about classes, as mystic is basically a space cleric, and solarian is more akin to a paladin. Vanguard and witchwarper are more like barbarian and sorcerer. My favorite classes i'd love to be able to portray are Biohacker (a syringe shooter that can both heal, buff and debuff) and nanocyte (starfinder take on kineticist, based more on adaptability than raw power) All in all i would love to see a starfinder adaptation, instead of another 1e adventure ported to video game.

Basing it on Pathfinder rules would be an added bonus. Owlcat can mark my kickstarter contribution down as already in the bank as far as I'm concerned. They've proven their credentials for a project like this beyond question at this point. Just take my money.

It'd be cool if Owlcat did make a Starfinder crpg, but what Adventure Path would they use?

I really do not believe that Owlcat Games, can release a game that is not going to be highly received at this point. So hopefully whatever they release it's well made and prepped for a lot of attention.

Im just desperate for a sci-fi crpg after playing through so many fantasy ones. So i really hope someone makes this into a crpg in my lifetime

I would be MUCH more excited for this over a 3rd Pathfinder game. Nothing against Pathfinder (enjoyed them both) but there's such a dearth of high sci-fi CRPGs outside of a few indie offerings like Stellar Tactics.

I would be very interested in a Star finder computer game. I have not played the tabletop of video game versions of pathfinder or star finder but I am interested maybe giving Wrath of the Righteous a go. At the table I only play DND 5E and my favourite cRPG is Solasta because it is a great re-creation of that. Now I have played more CIP jeez see RPG I think that maybe I should go back and try some more. I tried divinity original Sin two but it was too different from 5E than what I wanted. Now that Solasta has satisfied my need for a 5E game perhaps I can appreciate some other systems for the differences. My excuse is that I’m simply busy and don’t have much time for either video games or tabletop games so stick into 5E just reduces the amount of learning I need to do to move on to the fun part of the game.

I would absolutely love and welcome a Starfinder CRPG and hope it's already in the works.

They're not in the Core Rulebook, but I think all Starfinder fans would agree: If the video game doesn't include Skittermander as a playable race, we riot!

sounds like shadow run
@faylinnmystiquerose22242 жыл бұрын
Shadowrun is a Cyberpunk setting, restricted generally to single Earth cities, though it is a bit futuristic, and Starfinder does include cybernetics and magic, though Starfinder doesn't have megacorporations running everything, and you don't have to be basically a criminal either, plus you have various planets you can visit, though there is one primary hub, which is the massive Absalom Station.

If they made into a video game it would have to be like XCOM

Personally i'd rather have 2e be made into a game, but starfinder seems interesting at least
@dumbgames49332 жыл бұрын
HECK YES. Just, please Owlcat (or whomever), launch the game in a better state than the last 2 Pathfinder games. Love them, but they're a *hard* sell to new folks. (This seems likely to be motivated by Paizo trying to test out the waters, and I'm entirely down)

If they do make a star finder rpg, I hope they can add the mythic path equivalents from wor. Not having half baked kingdom management would also be great.

No, it will be all new half-baked space station management.
