Many businesses are happy to get anyone with any degree because of the core courses required beyond that of just high school. They can teach them the rest. Don't pretend a philosophy student only learns philosophy while earning a degree.

Another viable option is going down the path of psychotherapy. Philosophy is full of arguments concerning how one should live their life and it is a very useful addition when talking to a patient. Some might even argue that you can't do psychotherapy without knowing at least some philosophy.

Yeah actually in Vienna there is a postgrad degree called "Philosophische Praxis" which is like psychotherapy, but with philosophy.
@stiller44

psychotherapy is not about convincing patients how one should live their life, yes a philosophical foundation is needed like in almost all disciplines, however the mentality of a philosopher which stereotypically encompasses being argumentative and judgemental would not be suited for psychotherapy

I would have NEVER thought about going into advertisement as a phil major, but it makes so much sense.

Back at my community college there was a time when I was sitting next to a friend doing some homework for a Communications class on marketing or advertising or some such, and he had out a list of … angles? approaches? I forget how it was labelled, but basically ways that you can attempt to convince someone. You could appeal to emotion, or to authority, or to fear, or to popularity, etc… and I saw this, as a phil major at the time, and thought "this is literally just a list of informal fallacies". It was then that I realized all you have to do to be an effective advertiser is know what not to do in philosophy and then… do that instead. Just treat the list of fallacies as a list of tactics or whatever and you're good to go!

I am honestly surprised this connection is not brought up more often. Programming is all about logic. What are 1's and 0's but T's and F's? What are If Then statements but logical implications? What are for loops but universal generalizations? Sure there's a lot more to it, but the bones are there.

Because philosophy basically teaching about abstract things that is very hard to explain--and very hard to understand--in schematic, logic, or structured way. But because of it, I can learn any job requirements that I want because I already learn something very hard and any other topics is easy as hell LOL

SLIGHTEST. CLUE. Not ONE TINIEST idea, of what I want to do with my life. Lawyer? No. I'm not a con. Professor? Can't. You don't get benefits anymore. Government? No. I'm an Anarchist. Get a journal. Write down the alphabet each letter with a line of it's own. Next to each letter write down one job or activity or anything you'd want to try out. Not do forever but just try out. Work your way through the list and find out what you enjoy most and what you're good at. The average person 3 years to get really good at something and 7 years to become godlike at something. So get going. By the time you're 40 you could be amazing at anything. Good luck, and remember, we don't only live once, we live every day.

BA Philosophy & Literature major here currently looking for direction after the tumultuous pandemic years. I have the great fortune to still be covered by state support for students (Denmark) for the next two years. Additionally, I am fluent in Danish, German and English. Any good advice on what to go for next? Ideally, I hoping for a degree that combines the structure of philosophy, my international mindset (having studied in the U.K./U.S) and my knowledge of the set of languages. Thinking diplomacy, law or business - just don’t want to completely sell my soul as I cannot forget that snake bite by studying philosophy.
@CarneadesOfCyrene
@CarneadesOfCyrene Жыл бұрын
As my day job, I work in international development, something that is amenable to both international experience, and a desire to not "sell your soul". There are many international organizations that work in peace-building, democracy promotion, and economic development where a philosophical background could be useful. Philosophers are the ones that are studying what democracy, or justice really is, and I have found that background useful in working in spheres where many experts have a background in political science or economics, but not one in ethics or philosophy.

I'm considering computer science, economics, philosophy, physics, law. CompSci seems boring if I don't end up as a freelancer, business intelligence analyst or lead game developer tho, based on average salary, it's Law>CompSci>Statistics>Psychology>Physics>Philosophy. Based on interest, it's Philosophy>Physics=Psychology>Statistics>Law>CompSci. Potential skill: Philosophy>CompSci>Statistics>Physics>Psychology>Law I think I will choose CS and then I will be an either Game Developer, Mobile Developer, Business Analyst, Data Scientist or Software Engineer. I will take a master's degree in CS because I will stand out more and seem more interested
@CarneadesOfCyrene
@CarneadesOfCyrene 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! I agree that a business analyst role can be a good place for someone with enough background in CS to be dangerous, but who would get bored writing code all day. And the arguments and critical thinking form philosophy can help one excel in such a position. Double majoring is often a good choice because it can position you to work across teams, often in leadership positions.

I graduated last summer with a BA in philosophy and have yet to find a full time position. I tried going for marketing and technical writing roles but received literally zero interest from companies. I'm now trying to learn Python and may go back to school for something that will help me put food on the table. As much as I love philosophy and as important as I think it is, by itself it's not enough if you just want to get a well-paying job.

I'm sorry the job hunt is not going well! As noted in the video, philosophers often do well by their mid career because they pair philosophy with a graduate degree. By itself it is often not lucrative, but it can be the first step towards a much higher paying career.

Hmm. Travel and helping people, you could work in International Development (thst is my day job). As for music and spirituality, I would say that you are more than what you do, as an existentialist might say, existence preceeds essence. Or you can always pack up an be an itinerant philosopher, travelling, helping others, and sharing music and philosophy, though that is the least lucrative of the options. :)

What philosophy majors need is knowledge on how to construct their resume for some do the jobs people are mentioning. How do you sell yourself to the employer. Saying you’re good at critical thinking is fine and dandy but it’s not enough. You need to be able to seal the deal.
