A bit raw but clever! You don't have to have the phone behind the door, just the switch. Then connect an extended bell wire to the phone which, say, it may be in the kitchen or hall way, permanently connected on a charger so it never runs out of battery. This way, it's not an eyesore sitting behind the door ( ..so you keep the wife happy!.. lol) and it's just as functional. Excellent idea for house security!

It's not *really* a good idea to keep an old phone on permanent charge status. I kept a, not so old Samsung on its charger, using it as a tethered modem... Ultimately, the battery expanded to such a degree that it popped the cover, it swelled up to almost twice its girth... Had I not been startled by the expanding battery popping the cover and disconnected its charger, it might well have caught fire. It was certainly pretty hot to touch... So if one does employ this rather ingenious hack alarm system, use a new battery.

korohone Luckily it never had to , but for a $100 a year it was considerably cheaper than paying ADT for nothing. It will send out the call and if you have it in your contacts as Home Alarm or something like that you can call the cops and high tail it home before they get away. Nowadays you can use it in conjunction with a well hidden go pro on a wall wart set to take pictures at 1 frame every 3 seconds or abouts So you can identify the culprits to the police if they are gone when you get home. Its not as good as Ring or Time Warner Security but its an inexpensive way to know a breach has occured. You can even use a Basic Stamp or one of many inexpensive programmable modules with Passive Infrareds and Sirens and all types of security feature accessorys to trip the phone dialer , that way the phone can be hidden and not right at the door where intruders might see it. Its exactly what the wireless security companys use , cell phone technology .
