I think you did very well finding great shells in a picked over pile. The reticulated cowry is awesome. Your persistence paid off. Good lesson for me to not just walk by an old pile of shells. Thanks!

You introduced me into the value of dredge piles. A concentration of great 🐚 without all the walking!

That was super cool! I would never think to look through a drudge pile! Just shelled at Fort Myers Beach and didn’t find much. The dredging there and in Sanibel really seems to be affecting the shelling!

Oh boy that is unfortunate to hear. I know they lost so much sand b/c of those back to back storms. I have a local beach here that had a major dredge about 3yrs ago and it’s only “now” that the shells are showing up like they used to b4 the dredge. I guess it just depends-sometimes shelling can be good during/after a dredge b/c of all the stir up off shore where they are collecting the sand. I had a lady tell me once when she was a kid in Sanibel, when they did the dredging they used to stand at the end of the sorter and catch all kinds of shells coming out the other end b/c they didn’t block off the area to the public. Best memories for her right there 🤣. I wish they’d do the same today and just say enter at your own risk or something-but no, all blocked off 😭

@ yes!! Sanibel was actively dredging by the lighthouse and it was all blocked off. Fort Myers had part of the beach blocked as well!! Next week will be a 10,000 islands visit!! Have a wonderful week!!! Your videos truly are great!!! 💕

I enjoyed your video. I look for it every Sunday, If you don’t mind sharing, where do you find out about dredge piles. At 73, it is easier for me to sit and go through piles than walk long distances. At the end of April, we plan to spend 3 days shelling Juno/Jupiter and Singer Island to the extent my knees will allow.

I just google “Florida dredging projects” and bounce around the websites Google lists and sometimes I can find articles on it, other times the company’s sites will list all the active dredges with a date range-but those dates/months can be off b/c this was listed to go through till March but they were clearly almost finishing up. Anyways, once I see a dredge of interest-I do the footwork to see about it. Just about every time, no piles are open to the public so I don’t even bother but if a dredge is listed in an area that I’ve been to w/a pile I keep those in mind and take a visit to that area if I can. With that said I have only been to 2 areas that offer dredge piles to the public. I have been to dredges and stir up conversations with the guards too to get more info. You will almost never hear about them till “after the fact” there is a lot of “hush hush” if there is a current public pile; which I can totally understand and I myself keep it on the down-low…if it gets crazy at a pile they’ll shut it down. Social media is a big help too, sometimes people will post but not say where so you take that plus a google search and try to solve the puzzle. If I start seeing multiple posts w/shells I know for sure are not always just “on the beach” and there hasn’t been any storms, I do my own investigation 🤣 lol. Anyways, I hope that helps a little but that is my method.
