Love the detail on this video Mark. I've been working on trying to 'bow' my left wrist for my iron & driver swings and it's definitely bearing fruit. Noticing exactly what you say about getting a stronger ball flight and also getting better ball impact. Also working on using the ground forces to get more out of my driver, and when I get everything synched up it's great but can only do that 1 in 10 times. But I can see a big difference when I get it right so lots more work required to get it consistently. Love all this detail which can definitely make us all better players if we put the work in.

So good Mark. Being a former baseball player, I think this movement comes a little more natural; even the wider stance as well. My natural warm up swings include a small step like in baseball to get a feel for moving my lower body. Now I have to go measure how wide I am at address. Someone else asked a good question about the measurement for different height players. At 6’2” with long legs I’m guessing I may get close to 30” without feeling super wide, but interested in what you think. Actually, just measured Driver at almost 26” for my normal setup

A common movement with a driver, that all the pros make, is their head is moving back and down toward their back foot at impact. I tend to slide and my path is outside-in like most amateurs. Lately I've been really focusing on this head movement, which seems to have helped my path become more neutral, increased my launch angle, and reduced backspin because I'm hitting up on the ball.

In regards to the movement prior to starting the swing, the tappy feet etc. would you agree to a certain extent that the reason amateurs tend not to do that is because they are so focused on swing mechanics, while someone like rahm even and someone your level, is capable of trusting their swing mechanics enough to then focus on the power/speed of the swing?

This was absolutely brilliant, Mark. I’m a scratch player, and I experiment with lots of things, regarding to wrist positions, hip movement, and right side bend. I have some lower back issues, and this swing is very hard to replicate when I’m not feeling very flexible(because of the right side bend through impact, and the separation aspect of the hip movement). However…. I use this type of bowed wrist, leg power swing when I’m able. It produces amazing strike, and a very controlled club face. And just as you mentioned, a lower, more penetrating ball flight. I loved how you explained the wrists cocking “up” for most amateurs. As opposed to good players cocking the wrists more “back”. The feeling of cocking the wrists “up” is one of the biggest swing faults of amateurs, in my opinion. This produces a very cupped left wrist, right wrist never “setting” like your holding a tray, and often puts the shaft severely “across the line” at the top. I’m so glad that you addressed this, as it’s very often overlooked. Excellent video! I don’t often SAVE videos, but this one got saved.

Absolutely loving your latest videos Mark. It’s really making me understand power in the swing. I never knew how important it was to drive up with the lead foot. I’ve been working hard to add this to my swing. Definitely hitting it further creating more speed. But still working on syncing this as I tend to hit a very powerful pull. I like what you describe with Rahm feeling like he’s coming under and that feeling is making the lead foot jump easier. Hope that makes sense keep up this brilliant knowledge. It’s visual, its real and it really works.

Mate that was class!!! The exact things I have been working on with my coach over the winter: 1. Less “sway” in the back swing. 2. Less hinge, almost bowed wrist. 3. Lead shoulder pointing towards the ball at the top of the back swing; trail shoulder pointing 1/2-way to 2/3rds of the way between feet and ball at impact. 4. Good release with the right hand AFTER impact.

Im trying this bowed wrist but im having problems with the driver im hitting hooks or draws im a bit better with the irons...is his club path always out to in with the driver? Is having a weak grip with the left hand key?
@pjd3808 Жыл бұрын
Johns grip is an important factor that many swing analysts miss or don't point out. You have to have a more open right hand with this exaggerated wrist bow or you will hook the ball every single time. Ive been attempting to adopt this swing for a while now because of the noticeable power it produces . I finally got it after I made this change especially on irons. The driver has been a bit more of a challenge.

for me the important element of shifting the weight at the top of the backswing is about how quickly you do it. its a very slow motion!

@@maxsmart8954 Finau shortened his swing for more accuracy whereas Rahm is at the end of his available range. Finau can hit the ball a lot further (check videos) than he does during tournaments. They have 2 very different swings but yes then very effectively.

when i first started in the late 2000s i had a lot of foot work naturally and i wasn’t to dissimilar to tue modern power move. my path was horrific and i started with lessons. shame i was taught to “ remove the fancy footwork “ as i’m sure i hit it further when i did get one proper then compared to now. keep the great content coming
@trxe420 Жыл бұрын
Just goes to show you it really doesn't matter how you do it as long as you understand your swing and can you use it to your advantage. I agree with you on Rahm's swing, short is not the right word, more like wide. Just as a side note, this is a great concept for shorter players as if we try to get width at the top we often collapse or overswing. For me, if I am not feeling stretches in my sides I know I am overswinging.

Again, the golden nugget here is "matching up". Sure you can bow your wrist like DJ or Rahm, but unless you also clear your hips and get your shoulder plane to match it's going to be low duck hook city. In saying that, in order to force better body moves it can be an excellent idea to bow your wrist like them and force your body to adapt, to figure out how to move better.

My question on feet spacing is what would be a “power stance” compared to your size? Say myself for example i am a big guy and when i stand in a comfortable stance feet shoulder width apart i just measured the center of my feet at 26”. But i measure about 25” shoulder to shoulder. So for me thats not really a wide stance? So should you just be looking to go beyond shoulder width?
@Dreyno Жыл бұрын
I used to have a very wide stance. A few inches wider than shoulders. I found it left my backswing very short. Shorter than Rahm’s. I brought my feet a bit closer and I can turn easier. It’s still short but not as short as before. And my finish looks better which is a nice bonus.

Love the video Mark. But I have a theory about his swing. I think due to his born disability he developed a swing around it. He developed a setup that cause multiple effects that created one sequences of synchronized that generates huge huge amounts of power. So many things we as ammeter golfers should copy. Widening the stance helped me transfer the weight back to the ball earlier in swing as well allowing me to stretch further away from the ball.
@psycho8771 Жыл бұрын
He literally has said this before and how his swing through his coaches was tailored around this. His recentering early is what all good players but for most of us trying to bow be that laid off and hold that angle, most likely won't end well.

Makes me laugh when everyone's talking about shallowing the shaft during transition when John Rahm (because his backswing is so flat) actually steepens the shaft at the start of the downswing - and you can clearly see it in the video. This kind of disparity probably explains why we sometimes get worse when trying to improve. 🤪

Looks simple. Incredibly hard. Look at how straight that left arm stays and almost no lateral movement. Legs and shoulders, very little arns. That is where his power comes from.
@argee1977 Жыл бұрын
Isn't his entire swing down to the problem he has with his right leg and the lack of mobility, meaning he's developed a swing to compensate that issue and still create the speed he does? One of us try it and we'd have to build more than swing positions to do what he does, he's pretty much an anomaly in the game.

I hate this explanation, doesn't explain the most important part amateurs struggle with, which is getting the club back on plane. 12 min? any mention of the trail elbow connection? did I miss it? How that elbow helps you stay connected thru entire swing. how that simple repeatable bottoming out of the club at impact and subsequently when done right creates all those power postions we all strive for.If your a scratch golfer maybe this content is relavent, most scratch players already know either drop club in the slot thru varies methods or stay connected both methods attempting to keep the club head behind the hands during the downswing, avoiding swinging over the top which 95% of amateurs struggle with wither they shift their wait early or late doesn't matter because they dont know how to seq up the downswing. You Golf Pros never properly explain that or attack that problem right away? lol .Time is money and to pay a teacher $100hr+ for this info that doesn't seem to address major area of concerns for 95% of the golfers which in my opinion really didn't explain anything other than give me the false sense you know what your talking about. Ex of what i think is golf teacher worth spending your money on Tom Saguto check out his channel Saugto golf. I apologize if this comes stingy, I truly think something needs to change in the golf teaching community.
