Had an Acer Aspire one D260 with a intel atom and played similar games like GTA SA, the SAMP multiplayer mod was awesome, Minecraft did initially run in the early alpha days, but even then it was at the lowest settings and resolution possible with maybe 20 FPS, there was eventually an update that dropped support for that chipset and the game wouldn't boot anymore

The graphics driver isn't installed. They don't have amazing screens, but not bad for a 10 inch one. If it is the 2120 with the N550 and 2gb of ram, add an SSD and install a lighter Linux distro like Sparky rolling. Web still won't be the fastest, but it will make a huge difference. 7 on these with a traditional hard drive is painful. I know, I have one and with the $20 ssd and Linux on it, it runs surprisingly well for what I use it for.

I think not only you made a bad choice, but also you may have a 32 bits operating and/or lack of drivers. I have an Intel Atom x5-z8350 tablet (very popular CPU) and the power to performance is impressive for x86! It doesn't even need a fan, and even though Userbenchmark says it's worse than a Celeron N2840, I find it quite a lot faster in fact!

Alright, so an update to this thread. My machine started running very poorly under Windows 10. Linux doesn't like these. They're extremely slow on Linux. With drivers, they tend to be okay on Windows 7.

z atom is pretty strong I remember running couple of old 2000s games on z8350 but Microsoft's planned obsolescence like ruined the tablet. Installing linux is pretty bad because tablet would stay in portrait mode and half the screen works with touchscreen. Linux Driver support is pretty horrible because not many people own this tablet and has to do some reverse engineering. Linux performance is actually way better than Windows 10.

I actually do have a AIO motherboard with Atom 230 and 240 GB of HDD (can be separated). It originally had Windows XP Zver (aka Russian build of XP) until 2016/2017 when it got upgraded to Windows 7. Needless to say, it survived nearly a decade before moving to the new build (that is Ryzen 3 2nd gen CPU) that worked significantly faster than Atom. Overall, great review on this underrated CPU!

beginner mistake, no igpu drivers was installed, not even basic ones, this is windows 7 - you NEED to install them manually , Windows 10 installs Basic ones for you, they are horrible, but they at least Support games so you would be able to start them after that, but you still would Need to install the drivers manually after that

I was able to run Minecraft Java on a netbook "Asus eee pc 1018p" just not the latest versions, but versions from 1.5.2 and lower, on version 1.5.2 I had a stable 18-25 FPS. 4 years later now, i picked up a tablet which cost me around $75 that has Z3735F and 10 inch screen it comes pre-installed Windows 10, a wireless keyboard and flipcase. The performance on windows 10 was so terrible it won't even run vlc properly. Internet browser are also a pain as it won't open youtube unless you want for like 3 minutes. Then i also tried to run Linux with it and it just won't detect my bootable drive. Turns out it doesn't support anything other than Windows as it's most likely BIOS locked. And at last, i decided to run Tiny10 and backed up all the proprietary drivers. Worked wonders now, now that it only has 2gb ram and 32gb emmc storage 😂 I can finally open youtube a little faster and capable of actually play videos. vlc also works perfectly fine and i can even play 1080p videos (Matroska).

[07/31/20] Looks like a Latitude 2120. Wondering if I should upgrade mine to Win 10? Alternatively, I could convert it to a Linux system, but wondering which Linux distro will work best or is supported. What about Kali Linux, for pen testing? Despite it being a little slow, this is a robust machine to have on the side, because it was designed as a Netbook for the educational market. It could never run SolidWorks, but then again I have not tried it. lol It refused to install the MS Netframe sw so I'm not sure what the CPU is lacking so as to not support NetFrame?

I think it depends on your software; I have the same CPU with 1 GB of RAM running on Windows 8.1 Pro x32, and I have installed all MS library (Visual C++ 2005-2015, DirectX 9, XNA Framework, NET Framework 3.5+4.8) without any additional problems. What OS did you use when you tried to install NET?

This shit runs minecraft, but you have update drivers, put a old version, install "optifine", diseble ALL qualities from optifine and low chucks(runs about 30 fps). I have a intel atom laptop (HP Mini) and it has quite a higher resolution which is widescreen and it runs the same. Just don’t run newer versions of Minecraft because it has more than a java crash. A computer seizure.

Yeah, it explodes if you put anything beyond 1.12.2. But I've tested them all, and It can perfectly work with 1.12.2 at 60 FPS (unstable) if you install Optifine and tweak some options.

I agree the atom is a terrible processor, by itself, but the most embarrassing thing about these netbooks is the piss poor graphics cards they come with. I recently bought an acer aspire d255e. I knew of its limitations and it can play many games, but only comfortable with pre 2004 titles. Unreal tournament goty works amazingly well, quake 2 etc. If you know what they are capable of, they can be useful and fun to use.
