The analogy I like to use is that Americans had the federal marshals back in the 19th century, but they faded away in importance as state and local police gained more power. In Canada, we kept the power in federal hands. Provincial and local police forces exist, but they have limited powers; none of the pseudo-military police forces you get in big US cities. Instead, if you want the hard core police, you call in the Mounties.

I can't speak for the training of the RCMP nowadays but I know what it used to entail. I come from a family of RCMP going back to the Northwest Mounted Police before they became the RCMP. When my father joined in 1951, you had to run 12 miles the first day and every day, rain, shine or snow. The requirements that have to be met now to enter are much less demanding. At one time men had to be 6 feet or over, 200 pounds at least, could not wear glasses, could not be married when they joined. My parents were actually secretly married for over a year, as Dad hadn't been in the force for the required 7 years at the time. In fact a family joke we have is about my eldest sister. She was born before Dad's 7 years were up. She got the word illegitimate mixed up with legitimate and when ever she would cry she was legitimate, Dad would laugh and say, " I know you are. You poor little bastard!" lol

The emergencies that they are referring to (loading the truck) is probably for high risk emergencies as they do have an Emergency Response Team. I think you will even be able to find a video on this team as well. In Canada we do have federal, provincial and municipal police forces. The mounties are federal handling international policing, financial and organized crime, border and national security etc; however, they also do provincial and municipal policing in areas that do not have their own local police force. The RCMP have K9 units as do our provincial police and many of the larger cities here in Ontario. They are used for multiple reasons and some are specialized with one job. They are used for scent work (tracking, finding drugs, contraband (airports, borders) etc), crowd control, situations where they need the speed ie chasing after someone, search and rescue etc.

The mounties (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) are Canada's national police force. They began as the North West Mounted Police in the late 1800's as a way to police Canada's "wild west" and in the 1920's were incorporated as a full national force operating coast to coast to coast. They are tasked with policing in the areas that do not have a local police. The cities and some larger towns have their own police, so the mounties are not used as police in those areas, but they may be brought in for something major (like the FBI in the states), Ontario and Quebec also have provincial police forces (like your state troopers). The RCMP have the responsibilities of standard police services in locations where they do not have their own. I live in a small town, so the RCMP has a small contingent here. They also have the equivalent duties of the FBI, ATF, DEA, and Secret Service, as well as Homeland Security. They work very closely with our Border Service and Armed Forces. I served with the Canadian Military for 20 years and had, on occasion, worked with the RCMP in various operations. These ranged from drug interdiction to diplomat security, and other actions. The RCMP has it's historical origin with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in the Canadian Military before forming the Northwest Mounted police, then the RCMP in 1920. As a military veteran we share our pension fund and post service benefits with Veterans Affairs Canada.

They incorrectly mentioned that the RCMP was created in the 1920's. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was created on May 23, 1873. Initially known as the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), it was established by the Canadian government to maintain law and order in the western territories and address concerns related to the fur trade, lawlessness, and the settlement of the region. The rcmp is our federal police force, our fbi. But since most provinces don't have a “state police force” the rcmp also gets contracted out by smaller places without a local police forces. The rcmp has always been the answer to the difficulties with policing such a large and spread apart country.

I feel like that's not an accurate comparison, The FBI does not do anything like regular policing they investigate federal crimes only, they may be a federal police force but that's where the commonality stops. Based on this video alone they are more closely related to State Troopers in the U.S almost to a T. The Mounties from what I can tell do exactly what State Troopers do, patrol roads, highways and neighbor hoods, investigate crimes in their jurisdiction and enforce local and provincial laws, the FBI doesn't do any of that so to say Mounties are FBI counterparts is far off in my opinion.

There's no equivalent of the RCMP in the US. It's a federal police force, so it guards federal facilities like airports and does, basically, FBI sorts of things. However, if a town, city, or province doesn't want to train its own police force, it can sign a contract with the RCMP to provide regular, street-level policing. Where I live, the City of Vancouver has its own police but a bunch of the municipalities around it use the RCMP. They don't do border patrol, though. And, yes, when they were formed, they were more or less a cavalry regiment that was sent to police the prairies (plains), which is why they have cavalry traditions. Lastly, it's the RCMP that greet heads of state at the airport rather than the military. Also, you might be interested to learn that the honourary colonel of the RCMP was Queen Elizabeth II, that all of her personal horses through her reign were gifts of the RCMP, that she once invited them to provide the guard on Buckingham Palace, and that she instructed that RCMP officers ride just in front of her during her funeral.

Many small communitites here in Canada that do not have a police force depend on the RCMP to deal with criminal issues that arise within a small community of a particular province. The RCMP's primary responsibility is the enforcement of federal criminal law, and sworn members of the RCMP have jurisdiction as a peace officer in all provinces and territories of Canada. In my particular town we have both a RCMP detachment and a town police not affiliated with the RCMP. They are a small force who enforces all municipal regulations within the Town's boundaries. These duties include traffic enforcement, school safety monitoring, protection of homes and businesses, as well as animal control services. Imagine an FBI, state police and county sheriff all in one - that's the RCMP. Also, in some parts of Canada, there may be no fire dept or ambulance. A RCMP member may be all the help there is for any emergency for hours. They do it all. Oh, and the RCMP WAS a military unit, and is still a paramilitary force, rather than a civilian police department. They are assigned a "troop", and have a "regimental number" rather than a badge number, signifying that back in the 1880's, as the North West Mounted Police, they were considered a light cavalry regiment. They still have a regimental march, a headquarters they call a "depot", and hold regimental banquets and balls - in addition to maintaining the musical ride, showcasing cavalry skills from the late 1800's and early 1900's. Until recently, they had no union, but could fly for free on any Air Force flight as a member of the Armed Forces.
@mlu007 Жыл бұрын
Four things: 1) The red serge is a full mess dress only worn in formal situations. 2) The RCMP is definitely a civilian police force with jurisdiction all over Canada. They have some militaristic traditions but are not of the Canadian Armed Forces. 3) The RCMP has residual authority to enforce laws throughout Canada. Provincial police forces have authority to enforce laws within the territory of their respective province. However, 7 of the 10 provinces do not have a provincial police force and rely on the RCMP for law enforcement. Many smaller towns do not have a local police force. If a town doesn't have a police force and is located in a province that has a provincial police force, then the town must contract with the provincial police for local law enforcement. If a town doesn't have a local police force and is located in a province that doesn't have a provincial police force, then the town must contract with the RCMP for local law enforcement. 4) The application process is long but you can definitely work or attend university full-time during the process. There will be several written tests, interviews and a polygraph but you can attend those events by taking a day off from work or school. Though you only need a high school diploma to qualify, a bachelor's degree in a related field will definitely give you the upper hand and help you obtain promotions.

There's no real American equivalent. The RCMP is a federal law enforcement agency like the FBI, and it has some of the same federal investigation, international liaison, domestic security/counterterrorism, records management, etc. roles that the FBI has. It's also a uniformed police agency that patrols much of Canada, responds to 911 calls, and routinely makes arrests for street crimes. As a uniformed police force, it mostly works under contract from provinces or cities that don't have their own police forces (every province except for Ontario and Quebec contracts with the RCMP to fill the provincial police role, which among other things includes patrolling unincorporated areas).

@jpkac Жыл бұрын
They are called 'mounties' because in the begining when before they became The Royal Canadian Mouted Police in 1920 they were called The North West Mounted Police back in the 1870's and they patrolled the north west parts of Canada such as the Yukon (during the gold rush) and the western prairies on horses - hence 'mounties'.

I've heard that our RCMP would be in some ways similar to your FBI. The RCMP is a federal police service with federal jurisdiction. With a majority of their postings being in rural areas/communities. And our northern territories. With this, i sort of agree to that statement thought not completely. They've been known to handle non-biased investigations in cities with their own police service depending on severity of the case. Example would be the shooting that took place in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 2018, where two civilians and two municipal officers were killed by a gunman. The municipal police service after being rattled by these events wanted to be sure nothing was missed during the investigation and that the investigation had no biases, so the New Brunswick RCMP lead the investigation.

The mounties are federal police-they represent the Ottawa government. Largely they work outside cities...or in smaller villiages who do not have their own police. Each province charters city councils to police cities directly. The city of Sant john has a police force, the mounties work smaller towns like St Andrews All criminal law in Canada is uniforn from one coast to the other. The provincial police departments are similarly based on fedearal laws.. DUIs not involving accidents or death are handled by provinces...The Motor Vehical Act can differ from prvince to province.

When you join you have to do PARE just to Regina. I did mine in Halifax and I consider myself a very fit person coming from the military. I finished with 3 seconds left to go. I passed but damn near killed me. The first 2 laps you glide through pretty easily then its gets a little more difficult and the last 2 laps absolutely suck. If you go out to fast too soon, you will fail. I walked out of the gym and puked my guts out. Only 30 percent that sign up get past the requirements to join. I was there with 30 other potential cadets and only 8 got through. That said, if you fail you can come back in 6 months or a year. Long story short, I got offered to go to Regina after passing all my requirements. Other requirements when you sign up is the picture test. There is a written test and a picture test. The instructor shows you a picture for 10 seconds. Then they take away the picture. You have to list as many things from that picture that you can remember. For instance, how many people were in the picture, how many children, approx race and color, the color of their clothes, cars, license plates, surrounding areas. You have to get a minimum of 6 things right. Also part of the process is a polygraph. You can't beat the polygraph like in the movies. They will ask you if you did drugs or watched porn and other things. The. only way you fail the polygraph is if you lie. If you smoked weed in your teens you have to admit that. Understand that this is about honesty not judging you for past mistakes. You have to pass all that before you get your appointment for your PARE test. You have to send in a complete resume for absolutely every job you have done in your life. So after I finished all my entrance requirements they offered me the opportunity to go to Regina....which I turned down. My marks were very high and they really tried to entice me to Regina but at the same time I landed a position at a marina in Europe as a commercial diver. (Dive master) which I took. It paid twice as much as a 3 year officer. If I was going to do it all over again, I would not join the military at 17. I would become a commercial diver and did that my whole life.

Yukon and Northwest Territories plus Nunavit are territories not provinces. Horses are still used in policing. They are a federal force, but many communities "outsource" their policing to them. We have sheriffs also. CSIS is a specialized force within the RCMP which would be like the American CIA (CIA only has jurisdiction outside US) and FBI combined as they have investigative and intelligence roles within and outside Canada. The RCMP trains other forces around the world.

When I lived in Warman Saskatchewan the RCMP did a Huge bust, where 2 bearcats were used as it involved 2 residences. After several months of surveillance they made there move confiscating a massive amount of illicit narcotics/drugs and an incredible amount of illegal guns. This was a major bust resulting in hefty prison time. We have a saying here: the RC’s always get there man.

At the beginning they talk about 8 months to clear application! Well it is often a year or more ! You have to clear multiple Psychological Testing and they dig deep into your passed history and attitudes. Will this person Power trip or use their position of authority in a acceptable manner! During training you are watched carefully for unelectable traits. After they graduate they will be sent to Police in remote area’s often all alone! Also they will be moved around often during the first several years! Even if you wish to marry, your spouse is investigated and interviewed! She must pass this scrutiny if you wish to marry her and remain a RCMP Officer, or you will have to resign and find new employment to marry. Canada has done much Peacekeeping over the years and often RCMP will be sent to help police in many cases with the military!RCMP often serve as Town or City Police, County and Hi-Way Police, It is a Federal Police force and has Full Authority in all areas and does Federal Investigations like the FBI in America. Members are also expected to do lots of Community work, Playing , coaching and Referring in the Community ! Also mentoring and interacting with youth! They are used in different ways in each Province or Territory as some have, Provincial Police or Sheriffs as well ! In community Policing they provide effective more substantial Police then low population areas could normally afford ! Cities that wish to use them as their Police pay heavily for them but afford training and suppling their own! They have their own Labs, Helicopters, Dogs, etc. also have many boats for lakes Rivers as well as search and rescue! The have 4x4’, Pickup Trucks Argo’s, skidoo’s and bikes to get into remote areas , as well as Tac Squads and armoured vehicles !

while the FBi was founded as a national police force - the mounties were born in the Northwest Mounties back in the 1900's to patrol the gold rush and small towns in whe |Western Part of Canada but have since become our Federal Police Force and therefore provide services primarily in our provinces without a provincial police force - Newfoundland/Labrador; Prince Edward Island; New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia - regions of Canada that are somewhat financially challenged to not be ableto afford a provincial force - then there are the Western Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta that also have the RCMP in place of provincial police forces. basic explanation of our RCMP

Each city has a police force - each province has provincial police = state police - in areas with small towns but no large cities there is regional police- in remote areas there is the Canadian mounted police, the Mounties also serve as federal police in all cities across the country, however more for investigating federal crimes, they also protect visiting politicians as well as high ranking Canadian officials. In other words there are many divisions in the RCMP ( Royal Canadian Mounted Police) the closest comparison to the United States would be FBI/CIA/SECRET SERVICE - and in remote areas Texas ranger

The Mounties (RCMP) are a federal police force. Provinces and municipal governments can chose to contract the RCMP to provide local police services. It is very common in Canada for smaller towns to contract the RCMP to do the local policing instead setting up their own police force. Unlike the US, Canada has a national criminal code, so criminal law is the same across the country.

A final comment here... you saw the physical testing they have to pass, and heard how they derive a lot of their training ideas from the Canadian and British military... So, head on down to your local military office in your locale, and look at that woman typing at a desk in the background, etc.. and know this, in the Canadian military, that same typist, has to continuously pass 'THE SAME' physical testing as any other millitary person, annually... meaning, brutal tests, just so she keeps her job as a clerk... because... in a time of urgency, or emergency, she can be called upon in an instant, to load those trucks with 50 pound sacks, or cover for those in the field. Yes, the training is harsh, and its why they are proud to do what they do, and we as citizens, are also proud, and thankful for their service... pilot, grunt, or just a plain ol' cop.👍🏼✌🏼🇨🇦

My son is RCMP and went through the cadet training. There is a lot more to it than is shown here. Long nights of studying laws, how to deal with people in mental crisis. I think one of the biggest differences between Canadian and US police is we have a police service and you have a police force. It's a different outlook. Also police are funded by taxpayers here. In a lot of durastictions in the US they are funded by fines. That shifts the emphasis of police work.
@audreymartin2515 Жыл бұрын
Mounties police in regions that lease their services if they don’t want to create their own policing department. Only larger cities tend to have their own police department. RCMP also have a federal department that acts like the FBI. As a Canadian, I have never understood the role of Sheriff or Sheriff’s Department unfortunately. Working with a dog is a specific role that requires special training. Being in those barracks is strictly for training.

The RCMP were formed from the RNWMP, that was formed from regular Dominion of Canada Army, that come out of the British Army, hence the red tunic. Then North West Mounted Police were there to protect the Western Prairies and Territories before they were fully settled. They were a there to project sovereignty over the Crown lands of Canada.

Once the mounties are on the case you can be sure you will be caught and or killed. Fun fact: Saskatchewan is the flattest province and has no hills or mountains to slow the wind-down. So -20 can feel like -40. It's nearly the same as the US but there is an oddity among us I live in Ontario Canada and the mounties don't exist here. We have City police and provincial police. They are called the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) The y have jurisdiction throughout Ontario, City cops not so much.

Perhaps there are some desk jockies somewhere or maybe some station that's very deep in the north but they aren't a police force like they are in Saskatchewan. The OPP rule here.

RCMP originally the notrh west mounted police. Mounted as in on a horse. They are federal police, we also have provincial police and regional polce. (city police) The territories because they aren't provinces and are sparsely populated they only have the RCMP. Emergency supplies tend to be in response to a disaster, food, water, medical supplies. Can't call a fire truck or an ambulance to a huge portion of the country. We have many remote communities where the mounties are the only police. There's more to it than this but I'm sure other comments will fill in more. Have a great day 😀

The Mounties began in 1873 and called NorthWest Mounted Police and back then they were on horses. Our big cities have City Police Force, but small communities have RCMP except Ontario and Quebec who have Provincial Police Force. We have Border Officers like you do. Canadian here. The RCMP do not operate in the large cities like Vancouver, Edmonton. Regina Toronto. The city police control the major cities. The RCMP operate everywhere else in the country which are very very remote and dangerous. When I was growing up the RCMP members could only stay a max of 3 or 5 yrs in one place to ensure no corruption by becoming close friends with anyone.

But Vancouver and New Westminster which border on either side of Burnaby have city police, however, I believe the RCMP have jurisdiction everywhere across Canada as they are federal (not 100% on this though). By the way nothing to do with mountains more the Queen of England thus Royal Canadian Mounted Police.❤

Follow-up on RCMP police canines... I live in Red Deer Alberta, a few dozen kilometres north of the ONLY RCMP dog training facility in Canada, and, I live on the very south edge go town... my town isn't huge, just a hundred thou or so, but, they bring the new dogs up here for "city training". the first time I saw it, I thought we had a "situation" going on... but no, they had a fake criminal, running through the fields, crawling through the ditches, and hiding in the allies... only to finally let the dogs find him, and thanks to his massive padding, letting them "take him down"... its really something to watch. And it's not like they train hundreds, or even dozens per year. We have contests here, for school children, to name the few dogs, I mean pups, per year who enter their training... and once in a while, sadly, we remember those who give their lives in the line of duty. Best yet, if you're a tourist/visitor, and want to see how its done, the training centre has certain times in the summer when you can go and watch some of the field training of both pups and older dogs back for updated training... its a beautiful thing to see. The last time I was there, they even had one of the dogs that had been gifted to the queen, back for a visit, and roaming around through the bleachers interacting with the visitors... very cool.
