In doing research on Dempsey Massengale ancestor and Hughes early development of Rugby, Tennessee, the youngest son and his family lived with his widowed mother, in original homestead, to care for her, after his father dies, as document said this was common for this area. I found this interesting as oldest son usually inherits the land.

Hi Barbara, Thank you so much for sharing your family history with us. In most cases, the eldest living son would inherit the family property. But, we have found thousands of cases that the land was given to younger sons and even family members outside of the immediate family. I would guess that possibly more details can be discovered on the reasons why the youngest son was chosen to take care of his mother and live on the homesite. If you research further and discover other details, please let me know. Enjoy Your Journey to the Past!

We’ve been trying to figure out why a family would leave VA and go to Mississippi after the civil war and stay for several years before going back to VA. With all the devastation in the south, we haven’t been able to find out why they went. No family stories that we have found.

I would look further into family members living in the Mississippi area during the war. I've traced families migrating to the area as early as the 18th century. Research everything associated with the local area where your family lived. You will uncover clues and hints to guide your way to the details. Thanks for the question and Enjoy Your Journey to the Past!

There's the story of the Virginia farm lands being burnt out by tobacco. I also want to share my experience as a Yankee in-law with obvious North East mannerisms and accent in dealing with the Virginia relatives. One has to step very carefully in sharing information about the family history especially if it reflects on the family honor. This is a family that goes back to the 1650's. I'll leave it at that.
