Ariarne Titmus won the 400m free at the Tokyo Olympic, with her coach Dean Boxall celebrating in a way that went viral around the world. But this isn't the most interesting part...
A video from 12 months prior to the Olympics shows how Ariarne had trained for years to finish the 400m free to come home over the top of Katie Ledecky

“Taking your dog out for a walk? Being a little bit cute, that 50 eh? Batman sitting for coffee.....” LOL I love this coach! I swim on a masters team in the states - I could prolly use this coaching style. 😆 LOL

The 400 with Titmus and Ledecky at Tokyo was probably the most brutal women's race I've ever seen. 2 absolute hardnut competitors - neither giving anything, full tilt for 4 minutes. Ouch. Try it sometime. For any competitor to swim over the top of a legend like Ledecky, is unbelievable.

At 3.22 when she got out of the pool and feeling like that for years and absolutely pushing her body to the limit is special and rare. The scary thing is that she is 20 years old.

I love everything about this, the entire race was fascinating to watch, the emotional reaction of he coach as he watched it unfold and finally come off (the fact he has the same name as me was a bonus)...and even funnier has been the petty reactions of the Americans on Facebook complaining about him :)

I'm an American and Titmus' win and the coach's reaction was my favorite part of the Olympics. I like Ledecky obviously, but I also like underdogs and thought it was cool that Titmus won. Amazing race.

@@tenningale Was a great race, but I don't know why Titmus was the underdog leading into this given she was the reigning world champion lol. But still Katie isn't one of the greatest female swimmers, she's one of the greatest swimmers period. Hope this isn't the last time we see Katie and Titmus race.

@@BM-wf9uf In the betting markets Titmus was something like 9/5 and Ledecky around 4/5. But I agree it was def closer than that and Titmus had looked better leading up to the Games. And many people believed Ledecky was just saving her best times/planning her taper around the Olympics. She didn't need to go sub-4mins at US trials since everyone else was 4:04+. Titmus won in 2019, though Ledecky was off her times (and dropped the 1500) due to her health that meet. Ledecky at 100% still had that Goliath vibe when most of her career people are lucky to see her feet at the end. Was cool to see Titmus pull it off and clear up the debate over who's better in the 400.

Much credit to this girl, It’s no easy feat to beat Katie Ledecky in a swim race. I would’ve loved to have seen the outcome of this matchup had the pandemic not happened and the Olympics had gone forward as scheduled in 2020. That’s been a mixed bag for a number of swimmers with the loss of expected dominance for many and the rise of new superstars coming into their primes. Katie Ledecky has handled all of this like a champ and I am sure this girl and, hopefully her coach, will do the same under similar circumstances.
@tenningale
@tenningale 3 жыл бұрын
It's clear that Ledecky is no longer a contender in the 200, Titmus is better in the 400. Ledecky is still better in the 800 and 1500 but with times way off her WR's. Ledecky is slipping and could be vulnerable even in the distance events in 2024. In fact, Titmus looks like she could be about a year away from toppling Ledecky in the 800.

Ok, I will give you the victory thrust. I accept that as a “cultural thing” for you Aussie’s because we have some of that stuff in the States here as well. Really meant it as a joke though because of this politically correct world in which we live.

Australians are sports fanatics. Dean's passion is great and likely contributed to Titmus becoming the swimmer she is. Americans always show up with world class swimmers, the rivalry between Australia and America in the pool is one of my favourite things to watch in the Olympics. But unfortunately I think American swimmers and their fans can sometimes lack grace and sportsmanship quite often.
