What causes thunder snow?

Thunder snow occurs when a regular thunderstorm forms in a colder environment and the storm cell reaches 25,000 feet to create lightning.

I used to watch Jim Cantore with my Weather book on my lap when I was a kid and I was obsessed with thunder snow. I am literally getting my stuff into my car to go to work right under those strikes. Witnessing thunder snow, up until that night, was an item on my bucket list. I would always think that I would die with an unfinished list, as that would be the one I would never be able to see. Especially, here in Denver. Well, I witnessed it that night. On my way to work. I remember walking out to my car and remembering how quiet it was and just wishing that I could see thunder snow. Well, I was brushing my car off, and then I saw pink-white colored flash. At first I thought I was hallucinating, just staring up into the sky. Then, I heard the thunder. No joke eyes started dancing while brushing my car off and was crying. I was only able to see it once more before I had to start my shift. The memory of first witnessing thunder snow, and the joy of knowing that I’ll be able to complete My list, is a type of feeling and memory that I’m going to carry with me into death.

@sarmale 1994 I honestly at first thought it was someone slamming their car door until my told me and I sat looking out my window for 20mins and when I finally saw "thundersnow" for my first time in my 15yrs of life so it's very very rare and new to me, so I went shouting at my mom saying your right it's purple!

I live in Missouri and experienced thunder snow twice! First in 2008 and again about two years ago. The first time we actually had a pretty hefty accumulation of at least a foot when there was two loud claps of thunder. Never knew that was even possible until that moment at the young age of 21 😮

Thunder during a snowstorm is rarely that loud as the snow tends to muffle the thunder.
