I was ready to plant a month ago like usual and have had to wait. But I’ve got my potatoes and I planted peas, and all of that is coming up now. Just planted beans and cabbage so we will see how they do. I’m hoping that this cool spring means a cooler summer. At least cooler than the last two summers for sure. My cherry trees are loaded, I don’t think I’ve seen it this full in seven years of having cherry trees.

Thanks, again, for a wonderful presentation today! You are a blessing to us all! Oh, the challenges of gardening are endless!! I must have a ga-zillion moles, voles, and gophers :/ .... Since this is only my second year at in-ground gardening, I am prepared to keep my chin up and persevere. Last year I had 16 honeybear acorn squash and sugar baby watermelon plants decimated by powdery mildew, so I learned about neem oil treatment. (I am keeping my lettuce and greens INSIDE in a sunny window :) !!) Hopefully, this year's learning curve will be more merciful ~ LOL

I started all my seeds in the first part of February outside in Dollar Tree large aluminum roasting pans that came with clear plastic covers. Planted them in ground the last week of March. In April it froze for two nights and all my zucchini and squash burnt except for one or two leaves, five of my sixty tomato plants burnt as well. I decided to leave them be and they came back to life. I’ve been eating zucchini and squash for weeks now and my tomatoes are about 3 feet tall and have flowers. I live in the central eastern part of California near the foothills, I’m so glad I let my plant recover on there own.

@davej74582 жыл бұрын
Give Mason bees a try for early pollination. Those are the only bees that I see out right now in our area. Build them a place to nest and they will probably show up quickly. They do best in nests that have 5/16 inch or a bit larger diameter holes that are at least 5 or 6 in deep. One end of the hole needs to be covered or blocked in some way. Face the holes south or south east where the sun can reach them. Small holes and shallow holes in the nest will result in mostly male bees being hatched. In this case the real pollinators are the female bees. Also fix an area with mud and water for the bees to use in their nests and they will be able to spend more time pollinating. They pollinate in the early spring and are gone untill the next spring.

As a MN gardener who normally doesn't put warm weather plants out until the end of May to the first week or two of June, I think your garden will still produce. Our weather here has been variable (an 80 degree day coming this week, so that should help warm the soil), but the frost isn't out of the ground in all of our soil yet. Your harvest window might be shorter than you are used to, though, so the yield could be down. I hope your weather improves soon!

we are 8n northwestern part if mn and I've contemplated a greenhouse over the whole garden due to the state of the weather problems people have been having this year. what are your thoughts on this, being a minnesotan gardener?

@zaaqueen I know a lot of ppl in northern MN use high tunnels successfully. Greenhouses can get pretty warm during the summer unless they can be temperature regulated, which is an option. Another option is low tunnels and other small garden extenders over vulnerable plants. I garden in a lowland area in Central MN, and haven't needed one, but people around here do use them.

Spring is on its way. Hopefully no frost will bite the fruit tree blossoms.

Now I don't feel bad, my cold weather crops are stagnant here in the Willamette Valley too.

Although it's a bit warmer south of LA, our night temps have been consistently in the low 50's and the day temps in the mid 60's. Not good fopr summer crops. It's the coolest I can remember since 1986.

We are 15 degrees hotter in Texas. I had to put shade cover on my garden.
