Cheapest way to go through college: Start with community college. Transfer to an in-state University. Work a part time job that pays part or all of your tuition (and/or) get a scholarship for service.
@eddieramos97115 жыл бұрын
I disagree, In the state of Texas going to a community college disqualifies the student from receiving the Texas Grant (which essentially pays for your education). Financial Aid basically splits the bill 50/50 with the Texas Grant. So when students come in after completing their two years at the local community college, yes they receive financial aid, but they still have to pay for the other half that otherwise would of been covered by the Texas Grant. After high school I went straight to a University and have not paid a single cent for my education.
@nodishtoodeep30535 жыл бұрын
There’s a ton of different strategies that are cheaper depending on region, there’s different environmental factors involved and whether you want to choose passion over reliability. However it seems like the more specific you go the cheaper you get. For instance, the most successful plan for post academia in my experience is... Go to a WUE subsidized school, get a degree in power systems or nuclear engineering (if you like punishment). Join the navy as a teacher, they have a program where they’ll give you a $15,000 upfront bonus, pay off your tuition, give you a paycheck of $1,800 monthly, and give you a $15,000 term completion bonus. While this is going on take electives in power grid management. When your service ends join a power operations company, which is in such high need right now that we had representatives from Italy come to my school looking for these kinds of students. Profit. By the time you graduate all your student loans will be gone, you’ll have enough experience to get any job you want, and you will have started on your savings. You’ll only be paying off your interest. Of the 19 people I personally know who take this route 17 of which are multimillionaires working three days of the week at the age of 25.

A wise man told me that you can get just as much “education” at a community college as you can at Harvard. There’s more information at any library than a person could consume in a lifetime. The perks of going to Harvard, is that you can say that you got into Harvard, and that automatically indicates that you’re in the top 1% of intelligence. Other than that, education is education, and very often, experience trumps over degrees.
@RandomStuff-xn9wy5 жыл бұрын
Also networking I'd say. If you go to a Uni like Harvard and you keep contacts there that can really boost your working and social environment. Choose a major that interests you, and stick with it to completion. Your major only matters the first one or two years you're out of college. Having a degree is just a checkbox needed for HR to forward your resume to the hiring manager, who will then look to see if your experience matches the job. In all jobs, the soft skills will always be important: social, organizational, writing, presentation, communication, leadership. If college can help with that, then go for it, and have fun while you're at it.

Deftly executed, college is a rewarding experience, personally and financially.

This really depends on the career. Doing a trade like welding you will likely not benefit from a college degree, but doing retail you might be more likely to get promoted if you have a degree. It’s usually a checkbox, so community college is perfect for this case.
@bicycleninja16853 жыл бұрын
@@spencercase5370 Agreed. Community college is a great investment, and the bigger cities have concentrations for various trades. I was scared of getting a psych degree to until I did my research and realize I had options. Now I know that I want to combine my grad and PhD education so I can shrink the amount of time I spent schooling and I’m gonna spend the rest of years in undergrad equipping myself with the skills I need to get into that type of program. It's a shame you don't talk about the benefit of trades or other career paths. I have two friends, one is a chemical engineer and the other an electrician. My engineer friend went to University, accrued a good amount of debt over six years, and now three on from his degree, he's earning 275k/year. My electrician friend started work after highschool, did six months intensive tech training followed by an apprenticeship and was a certified tradesman at 20. Now 27 - he owns his own contracting company, and pulls in over 250k/year. He had no student debt, earned while he was learning, and started earning six years earlier. He had bought his first house before my engineer friend had even finished University! Sometimes the smartest move, especially if you are capable of completing university study is to go into a trade where you can quickly rise to the top pay grades.
@louisducsharm61276 жыл бұрын
I agree with this! Trades are also incredibly necessary and not enough people go into them (its somehow stigmatized??) - we need electricians and welders and everything else. The only trade that is unsure is chef, and that's because it's such hard work with not necessarily the same return if you do not have a passion for it. Even if you do go culinary routes though, theres tons of different career options since food is so vital.
@unknowndeoxys006 жыл бұрын
I knew little about going into trades, simply because I wasn't encouraged to learn about or consider them. My parents were graciously loaded enough to send me to a 4-year under the average loan amount. But with that came a constant barrage of discounting community college as a socially and educationally legitimate way to entering the college life, as well as vocational schools, claiming kids will never earn as enough money or respect from others unless you have a bachelor's from the get-go. I never understood this stigma. My parents would even shit themselves at the idea of a "gap year." I don't know what the climate will be like 20 years from now, but I am never forcing my children straight to a 4-year (and loan debt) if they are not being made aware of their options.

The best approach to saving money AND getting the best possible education by applying to as many scholarships and getting as many grants as possible. I went to an Ivy League university in my state. Not only did I get state grants, I received grants & scholarships from my university and I left college with only $15,000 in federal loans. Four years at my university is at least $200,000, so I got a great deal. Starting next year I will aggressively pay off my loans. I project by the end of next year I would be done paying off all my loans. I had a friend in college who went to community college for two years and then transferred to my college and her loans were less than $8,000. We got our degrees for a good price and as a return we have one of the best alumni networks in the country.

@vanesal34356 жыл бұрын
allcoiledup True. One thing I will say is that I remember companies specifically recruiting seniors from certain majors at my university. A lot of those companies have alumni from the same schools working at the same companies. I think it’s unfair but it happens a lot. Another thing about going to a school that has a huge endowment and allocates money appropriately for students is that they are able to fund programs that are unavailable at schools with lower endowments. For example, I remember one year I couldn’t afford to get a crown for tooth. I spoke to someone at the financial aid office and they told me that have funding for students who can afford medical bills or procedures or a return ticket home in death of an immediate family member. They paid $1,000 for my crown. It was not a loan. I also was able to do travel abroad for short volunteering service trips using grants and pay for summer class using scholarships because the university had the money for it. That being said, I wouldn’t have gone there if I had to go in debt more than $15,000. It doesn’t make sense to go into a lot of debt for an undergrad degree.

@@missmegan3694 There are s lot of reasons why our GDP isn't as good as yours, but if you compare BNP per capita we're actually no that much behind. You also have to take into consideration historical factors like the Euro crisis, which did affect Finland a lot. We have had a really long recession, but it's looking up now. I do realize our system at it's current state isn't a good long term option, as our state debt is increasing and we wont be able to support our population partly because of a low nativity and that too many benefits have been given. Still, I actually don't mind how much taxes we pay in the end. Yes, it does sting a bit, but I see the value in everyone in my country getting an equal oppotunity to a good education. Some might think I'm from a low earning family, and thats why I don't mind the taxes, but actually both of my parents pay close to 50%. And both of them see the value in paying taxes that high. No, when I see people bashing our system, I get it; it's not perfect. But hey, at least I will won't be covered in student debt after my studies and I live in a country where insulin isn't worth a fortune. That last thing was a little off topic... oops

I make enough at my job to live comfortably and did not have to go to college after highschool , but I really love neuroscience and want to be a doctor. For example, bls.gov reports elevator repair job positions to number below 30 thousand vs registered nurse at over 3 million. The promise of high pay won't mean much if there aren't any employment opportunities, apprenticeships included. Plus there are college degrees so totally worth it; my mom with her BSN earns just shy of $58/hr and my aunt with her master's in accounting (from Cornell no less 0.o) hovers around $140k/yr. And they don't experience the aches and pains of my dad who's been in agony since his late forties; decades as a boilermaker and auto tech took their toll. My HVAC brother who's in his early thirties is already starting to pop and crock, too, lol. In short, everyone's experiences are different and perfectly valid, but people can find success (and failure) whether blue-collar or white-collar.

@Anomerik5 жыл бұрын
@@sarahschmidt4217 Yeah, those jobs exist and sometimes pay well, but does a degree really help? There are so many resources online between KZbin, MasterClass, and the like, that you could learn (I would presume) just as much on your own as you could in the classroom. At the end of the day, talent is going to get you the job, not a degree. Therefore, couldn't someone learn online, create a portfolio, and garner attention through the work they put out? The person could also fund this hustle with a day job or even with a much smaller loan than a predatory student loan.
@ANA-ie1lf5 жыл бұрын
@@Anomerik Sorry to interrupt, but while I agree with you, many jobs just don't ask for a demonstration of talent at all, they go the easy way and just pick whichever application has the word "Degree" in it. So, degrees, I think, are not really for learning (when it comes to art and such), but just to prove one knows their stuff. Kind of a weird and annoying system if I have to spend time and money just so employers can be lazy with picking.
@TubemastaC5 жыл бұрын
Jawn of Arc also some art fields should be taught in the classroom. Learning different paint techniques and going through legit critique by art professionals is definitely better than googling techniques and having people online evaluate the art. Same goes for many forms of art. And the history behind the techniques and whatnot. Art school is very hard for a reason. The market is over saturated with mediocre artists so generally ones who go to school for it aim to be so above that caliber to get money.

I had a high SAT score and GPA when I graduated from high school. Going to a community school meant I could get a lot of scholarships, vs an expensive private school where I would have been on the hook for 45-50% of the tuition, even with scholarships. I don’t regret going to a community school because it drove me to remember why I was there and that I had a goal to achieve. I graduated with honors and two degrees, 3.98 gpa with two STEM degrees, and was recruited out of college to become a programmer with a decent job. If I’d gone to a more expensive school I’m not sure I could have had the financial freedom to go anywhere I wanted after graduation. I also wouldn’t have been able to stay in school for 5 years to get a second degree due to financial concerns. Everything is about what you make of it. Going to a community school was financially responsible and I don’t regret it because it gave me options at graduation, even though I missed out on the ‘big college’ experience.

Best of wishes to you both! Also, quick note on 3:11 when you compare salaries of a BA vs HS degree, it doesn't account for the salary growth potential for one to break even after getting a college degree. If you work a retail position, your salary can only go so high, while a bachelor's allows people to instantly take a managerial position or get promoted to ranks that a HS grad cannot advance towards. It would be interesting to run numbers taking into account these opportunity costs. Once again, best wishes and much love!
