Jose Well a lot of people who go to community college are perfectly qualified academically to go straight to a four-year, but decided to go to a CC first because they (did) plan it out. It’s significantly cheaper, you get useless general ed classes out of the way at a much lower price, and you can still get a Bachelor’s in four years. IMO people who go to a community college first are actually more prepared.

I was also in the Accelerated studies in associate program at my CC in NY. I went to LaGuardia so thanks to the program I had tuition wavers, monthly transportation with a metrocard, I can attend smaller classes and I can register for classes early and they gave me money to spend on books for classes whenever I took them. Cheapest way to go through college: Start with community college. Transfer to an in-state University. Work a part time job that pays part or all of your tuition (and/or) get a scholarship for service.

I disagree, In the state of Texas going to a community college disqualifies the student from receiving the Texas Grant (which essentially pays for your education). Financial Aid basically splits the bill 50/50 with the Texas Grant. So when students come in after completing their two years at the local community college, yes they receive financial aid, but they still have to pay for the other half that otherwise would of been covered by the Texas Grant. After high school I went straight to a University and have not paid a single cent for my education.

There’s a ton of different strategies that are cheaper depending on region, there’s different environmental factors involved and whether you want to choose passion over reliability. However it seems like the more specific you go the cheaper you get. For instance, the most successful plan for post academia in my experience is... Go to a WUE subsidized school, get a degree in power systems or nuclear engineering (if you like punishment). Join the navy as a teacher, they have a program where they’ll give you a $15,000 upfront bonus, pay off your tuition, give you a paycheck of $1,800 monthly, and give you a $15,000 term completion bonus. While this is going on take electives in power grid management. When your service ends join a power operations company, which is in such high need right now that we had representatives from Italy come to my school looking for these kinds of students. Profit. By the time you graduate all your student loans will be gone, you’ll have enough experience to get any job you want, and you will have started on your savings. You’ll only be paying off your interest. Of the 19 people I personally know who take this route 17 of which are multimillionaires working three days of the week at the age of 25.

I would add getting core / requisite course work done in a community college than transferring in to a uni to makes it cheaper too. Also, have some deliberate plans with a degree rather than going to college for the sake of going (if you're going to major in underwater basket weaving, do you have sort of a plan about a career path or at least talked to someone about it?) I think everyone has seen plenty of service industry workers with half of a college degree or liberal arts degrees who's stuck at where they're at with little chance of meaningful growth.

Nabiha Siddiqui it just depends on what 4 year you want to attend. Google “transfer scholarships for ‘your 4 year school of interest’.” Make sure to ask about a Phi Theta Kappa chapter the community college you enroll at. Universities throw money at members of that honor society. I’m going to The University of Alabama right now solely on scholarships, mostly transfer scholarships. Go to a 2 year and work your butt off to get the best GPA you can while you’re taking smaller, easier classes. Take advantage of having teachers that you can get to know and ask for help. A wise man told me that you can get just as much “education” at a community college as you can at Harvard. There’s more information at any library than a person could consume in a lifetime. The perks of going to Harvard, is that you can say that you got into Harvard, and that automatically indicates that you’re in the top 1% of intelligence. Other than that, education is education, and very often, experience trumps over degrees.
@RandomStuff-xn9wy

Also networking I'd say. If you go to a Uni like Harvard and you keep contacts there that can really boost your working and social environment. Plus there will probably be more potential employers going to Harvard to recruit directly there than to community colleges.

Andrew Hernandez you don’t have to go to med school. Don’t panic, be smart about ur decisions to reduce or eliminate debt while u go. But Pychology is extremely diverse and more than just being a counselor. I’m a psych major and plan on being a neuropsychologist which make over 80k starting and the median is about $100-120K even more in certain states. You can be an industrial organizational psychologists which make well over $100K as well. The bad news is that this takes at least a decade to do and u will definitely need a doctorate. My schooling is paid for about 70-80% by the academic and athletic scholarships I earned throughout my years in high school and continue to earn. I was scared of getting a psych degree to until I did my research and realize I had options. Now I know that I want to combine my grad and PhD education so I can shrink the amount of time I spent schooling and I’m gonna spend the rest of years in undergrad equipping myself with the skills I need to get into that type of program. Choose a major that interests you, and stick with it to completion. Your major only matters the first one or two years you're out of college. Having a degree is just a checkbox needed for HR to forward your resume to the hiring manager, who will then look to see if your experience matches the job. In all jobs, the soft skills will always be important: social, organizational, writing, presentation, communication, leadership. If college can help with that, then go for it, and have fun while you're at it.

Deftly executed, college is a rewarding experience, personally and financially.

This really depends on the career. Doing a trade like welding you will likely not benefit from a college degree, but doing retail you might be more likely to get promoted if you have a degree. It’s usually a checkbox, so community college is perfect for this case.
@bicycleninja1685
@bicycleninja1685 3 жыл бұрын
@@spencercase5370 Agreed. Community college is a great investment, and the bigger cities have concentrations for various trades. It's an opportunity to improve reading/writing, math, and critical thinking. Anything beyond that should be just for networking and social purposes. If you're not getting a job that can pay for that 4 year degree and where the networking will help you, it's probably not worth it.

It's a shame you don't talk about the benefit of trades or other career paths. I have two friends, one is a chemical engineer and the other an electrician. My engineer friend went to University, accrued a good amount of debt over six years, and now three on from his degree, he's earning 275k/year. My electrician friend started work after highschool, did six months intensive tech training followed by an apprenticeship and was a certified tradesman at 20. Now 27 - he owns his own contracting company, and pulls in over 250k/year. He had no student debt, earned while he was learning, and started earning six years earlier. He had bought his first house before my engineer friend had even finished University! Sometimes the smartest move, especially if you are capable of completing university study is to go into a trade where you can quickly rise to the top pay grades.

I agree with this! Trades are also incredibly necessary and not enough people go into them (its somehow stigmatized??) - we need electricians and welders and everything else. The only trade that is unsure is chef, and that's because it's such hard work with not necessarily the same return if you do not have a passion for it. Even if you do go culinary routes though, theres tons of different career options since food is so vital.
@unknowndeoxys00

I knew little about going into trades, simply because I wasn't encouraged to learn about or consider them. My parents were graciously loaded enough to send me to a 4-year under the average loan amount. But with that came a constant barrage of discounting community college as a socially and educationally legitimate way to entering the college life, as well as vocational schools, claiming kids will never earn as enough money or respect from others unless you have a bachelor's from the get-go. I never understood this stigma. My parents would even shit themselves at the idea of a "gap year." I don't know what the climate will be like 20 years from now, but I am never forcing my children straight to a 4-year (and loan debt) if they are not being made aware of their options.

@Zece Kobold Indeed. Although, 45% is the highest tax bracket for incomes above ~ 54K euros per year. The tax bracket below that is 42%, which isn't that much of a difference. However, that figure includes social security like healthcare, unemployment and pension iirc, which add up to ~19%. So the effective tax rate is around 23%, which doesn't seem too bad.

For example, bls.gov reports elevator repair job positions to number below 30 thousand vs registered nurse at over 3 million. The promise of high pay won't mean much if there aren't any employment opportunities, apprenticeships included. Plus there are college degrees so totally worth it; my mom with her BSN earns just shy of $58/hr and my aunt with her master's in accounting (from Cornell no less 0.o) hovers around $140k/yr. And they don't experience the aches and pains of my dad who's been in agony since his late forties; decades as a boilermaker and auto tech took their toll. My HVAC brother who's in his early thirties is already starting to pop and crock, too, lol. Better food, better cars, better house, more going out, more vacays, and overall better lifestyle. College helps achieve an "American Dream" Realistically speaking in todays modern society our generation is forced to seek higher education otherwise the ability to have better careers are unlikely. And for the careers that do offer great paychecks with minimal schooling, well we are possibly uninformed about since some subjects we learn at school don't help us discover how we wish to contribute to a functioning American society.

@Sudan Nutella looking at my college, I would have only needed 2 semesters of math, with one being calculus. Most STEM bachelor's degrees are not worth it still. Environmental science is a better option than chemistry imo. With chemistry you will likely work as a Lab Technician and most people have to get even more education to make decent $. I know some friends that took biochemistry to go the doctor root, (didn't have good enough grades to get in like most people) but they did internships at biotech companies and got decent paying jobs with those companies after graduating. I only know one person that got a diploma (Canadian equivalent of associate degree) in environmental science and she got a job in oil/gas.

Something that is always skipped over is the access to IB/AP courses in high school or just taking the tests without taking the course. Minnesota costshares the test so it was $20 to take a test that could skip thousands of dollars in community college or other college credits. I know lots of people cheer on community college and trade schools as the solution to wanting schooling without debt, but you couldn't have paid me money to stay in my hometown with my parents for 2 more years. I entered my state flagship university as a junior standing and graduated in 2.5 years with a double major in social sciences. I'm debt free and yes, I'm gainfully employed with that degree without any additional schooling (even making more money than my engineering fiance)

best advice you can get, go to a community college and get as many credits as you can that will apply to your degree, then transfer to wherever you want to go (obviously, make sure the credits WILL transfer prior to this, but if you go to a state university you're likely 100% fine.) Otherwise, you can just get a 2 yr degree from a community college and still get a good job, depending on what you go for. Additionally, you can easily graduate without any debt or very little debt if you work and/or have people who will help pay for your college.

Math Note: When running the numbers, the cost due to the loss of 4 years of productivity while attending college was not added in. Using the BA in arts vs High School Diploma example, after 4 years of college, the BA in arts would have lost $80,360 while the High School Diploma holder (assuming they went into the work force directly out of high school) would have made $139,000 during those 4 years. Therefore, the effective cost of going to college in this example is ~$220,000, which will take 14.4 years to recover at $15,264 dollars per year, rather than the 5.3 stated in the video.

I had a high SAT score and GPA when I graduated from high school. Going to a community school meant I could get a lot of scholarships, vs an expensive private school where I would have been on the hook for 45-50% of the tuition, even with scholarships. I don’t regret going to a community school because it drove me to remember why I was there and that I had a goal to achieve. I graduated with honors and two degrees, 3.98 gpa with two STEM degrees, and was recruited out of college to become a programmer with a decent job. If I’d gone to a more expensive school I’m not sure I could have had the financial freedom to go anywhere I wanted after graduation. I also wouldn’t have been able to stay in school for 5 years to get a second degree due to financial concerns. Everything is about what you make of it. Going to a community school was financially responsible and I don’t regret it because it gave me options at graduation, even though I missed out on the ‘big college’ experience.

Really agree with just about everything and it’s a good topic that I wish was discussed with me before college. One thing to add, going to college to make $50k it actually takes a minimum of 5 years typically to get there. Missing out on years of potential earnings. I’m glad I went to college and I know I make more then I would have, but switching majors put me years and years behind the alternate situation which would have been going straight into earning money as an apprentice or something. If becoming financially independent as fast as possible is your goal like mine, it’s something to think about. Obviously every situation is different and nuanced.

College isn't for everyone despite the social expectation of obtaining a Bachelor's degree. Heck, I've spoken to graduates of graduate school, and they've told me obtaining those higher degrees only matter if the degree is necessary for a specific occupation. What really matters in your life is what you want to pursue for yourself from there you decide on how and what to educate yourself on. There are trade schools, community colleges, universities and apprenticeships. Perhaps there are even more lesser known options I'm not aware of. In short, getting an education helps improve your standard of living more than you know. Stay curious. :)

If you're planning to be any kind of doctor, might I suggest you try medical scribing first? I did it in family medicine for 9 months and figured out that being a diagnostician is not for me. The hours suck. High stress. Staying after work unless you owned your practice. Gotta juggle patients that are not yours like the PA's, help the nurse practitioner because she doesn't know more than you, take care of another doctor's patients because he gone on vacation, etc. Many are pre-meds and 70% fail to get into the scribing job at the company I worked at; also turnover is high. I'd say if you can't medical scribe, you can't even dream to be a doctor. Scribing is only 1/3 of a doctor's job. If you're struggling already with that, how are you going to handle doing the patient visit, physical exam, and diagnosing on top of the documentation?
