Personally Im arm neutral. I like both arm colors for Sonic. I also believe that his arm color is all personal preference, but i do believe to give the animation and art team full freedom to change up his arms or any other part of his design to be more visually pleasing for the fanbase/ target demographic/ audience.

Having a character being designed purely one colour is almost always a way to make them look less memorable. And this is something that’s (in general) not subjective as colour theory supports it. The tan arms work better in my opinion because they add complexity and have a good contrast against blue, since the arms look somewhat like a shade of yellow and blue and yellow contrast pretty well. All blue apart from the shoes, face and stomach looks a bit strange to me. Additionally, I heard somewhere that Sonic was designed to be similar to the white belly hedgehog which doesn’t have arms of its fur colour, while Shadow and Silver were meant to be more like normal hedgehogs in design, same for Amy. This is why Knuckles and Tails didn’t need differently coloured arms like Sonic and Amy, Contrast wasn’t the main reason. So I feel like it’s a disservice to give Sonic blue arms as it goes against the designers view of the character, as it changed something he did, whereas the Modern design doesn’t actually take anything away from Sonics design but only adds things (like height and coloured eyes). I felt the movie design would have still worked good with the tan arms and better imho, but I don’t mind Boom Sonic being blue armed as he’s not based off the original games in any way and is an alternate universe, the movie being a loose adaption of the game so it should be more faithful to designs. That being said, I think Amy should have mandatory pink arms like her fur colour because it simply doesn’t make sense not to at this point after what they’ve done to Sonic

While I think blue arms are superior, the rule of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" also kinda applies here. Sonic has looked this way for DECADES, his design alone is part of the franchise's appeal. While different interpretations can get away with changing his design, I don't think you could heavily redesign Modern Sonic without rubbing a lot of people the wrong way.

in my opinion both colors are good and match a different type of design, it's like an outfit or an accessory it will only serve well if it fits the character's style, Sonic from the games has classic elements that everyone is already used to like the tan colored arms because his design was planned to fit with that element, Sonic from the movie was made with another design style and aiming to be realistic but still keeping the characteristics of the franchise, so Sonic's anatomy is the same as in games such as his short stature and the big eyes but like the real life hedgehogs has the most apparent quills and the fur is usually of uniform color they applied these elements in the quills and on Sonic's arms with one being more apparent through the fur and the arms being blue in color as well as much of the body, as it was said in the video these ideas fit with their respective designs because they were projects for that, so in my opinion both colors are good and if they will fit or not will depend on the design style that will be best for it, in my opinion the more traditional and cartoon look like games, comics and animated series suits best with the tan arms and the live action style seems to match more with the blue arms, I don't know about you but it seems balanced and fair

The funny thing about Blue arms is, before the movies and Sonic Boom, blue arms in the sonic series have always popped up as coloring mistakes I say they have a place now, thanks to Boom and the movies, but mainline Sonic should just stick to the modern design we have now, the tan arms break up the colors nicely, otherwise it's honestly too much blue and draws your eyes on his belly, and that's weird. one thing I can say for certain, at least they don't mess with the leg color, looks awful when that mistake is made.

I honestly think it depends on art style. When you showed adventure sonic with blue arms and movie sonic with tan arms, they look weird. I think it might also be a texture thing, like his tan arms fit more as a piece of his body that isn't completely fur and blue fits more as his fur. If you try to give adventure sonic blue arms, you have to show that it's fur to an extent and not have it so smooth while if you give movie sonic tan arms, it would benefit to make his arms a lot more smooth, maybe even hairless (although in a live action film where you're making him a little more realistic, that doesn't work, like how sonic adventure is stylized to be a cartoon pretty much.) In summary, I like both colors for sonics arms under the right conditions. I think the sonic prime version of sonic looks awesome and would look weird with blue arms while I think movie sonic looks awesome and weird with tan, smooth arms.

I think that the reason Some sonics look good with blue arms and some don’t is because some don’t have as detailed fur as others. In the games, sonics fur looked more solid and you didn’t really see much texture. When the movie came out you could see all of his tiny spikes. And in sonic boom he has more spikes growing out. You can tell they are giving him more and more detail.

Great video! I totally agree that the arm color really depends on what media best suits it. Making a sudden change to tan in the movie, or blue in the main series would just be unnessecary. I prefer tan arms myself, but that all depends on the person. Whether you like one or the other, there's a version of Sonic with that arm color you like that you can enjoy. There's no real reason to fight over it when everyone gets what they want in one way or another

Funny thing is and I will preface this with I was idiot back then but honestly I always drew sonic with blue arms even when I was a kid and was confused when the blue arm thing was in boom and was shocked he did have flesh arms in everything before Boom. I think my mind was playing with me especially since like you said everyone but Amy and Sonic had arms that matched their fur color so I guess I assumed so.

Tan arms tan arms Blue arms are cool, they don't look bad at all, but I like tan arms most since they fit the mainline Sonic design the best. Obviously tan arms look weird on, say, the movie design, but that's because his arms there are designed with a little more realism -- in some shots, you can even see his e l b o w s that's w e i r d d d But with the mainline Sonic design, they just make his arms look more noodle-y, which works great for his cartoony proportions and inspirations. And, just as a personal little thing, I don't know if anyone thinks like this but they kinda give me Mighty the Armadillo vibes. I dunno, tan arms makes Sonic look like he's got this slim, lean, sorta softer front / inner body, with the spikier and more protective back. I like it, they make him feel more hedgehog-y but still cartoony enough to work as he is. At the end of the day, whatever, Sonic's arms can be whatever colour, doesn't really matter to me -- but between the two, I do kiiiiiiinda like the tan arms

Tan arms work best in 2D/2D illustrations. While you CAN make them work well enough in 3D, the reason Boom (and probably also Movie) Sonic was given blue arms is very similar to the reason why he was originally given tan arms: it makes animating them easier. Unless you just completely detach his arms from his body (like early 3D Sonic models did), the textures are going to distort weirdly at the shoulders. It can make them look a bit off-model in some poses without REALLY working to preserve that hotdog shape the arms are supposed to have. 2D doesn't have this problem because you can just... draw his arms however you want, without needing to wrestle with 3D geometry. (And Boom Amy might've kept the tan arms solely because she's wearing a sleeveless dress, which her shoulders are directly attached to, so keeping them looking on-model was less of a problem. It's still a factor in her usual design -- where she's wearing a halter dress -- though.)

Ehh I gotta say I prefer the flesh colored/tan arms. When you compare Sonic's model to other characters he simply has the blanket designed. The reason Shadow, Silver and even Boom Sonic can get away having same arm color as their fur is because they have way more added to their overall design. It shows when you bring up the SA Sonic with blue arms, he looks blander than normal. Even when you brought up Mocie Sonic with tan arms, it looks way better and his model pop out a bit more imo. Pretty much why Boom Sonic having blue arms didn't really bother much people. He had the sports tape, scarf, etc. Just more to his design I guess

Well, I was introduced to Sonic with the tan arms, the blue arms (especially on Movie Sonic) are just better imo. I kinda started noticing that tan arms is part of his skin, making him look like a hairless hedgehog except for his torso and legs, which are fur/hair, which is very weird to me. So I definitely prefer blue arms, and I DEFINITELY would like a 2D classic game with them, because if Sonic Movie 2's credits prove it possible then it should happen.

While I love tan armed sonic. After the years I've grown used to blue arm. I was one of them people who was so mad at the boom design over his arms. Though mostly that anger was pointed at the shorter splines and lankier legs. But with seeing it in the movie and games gone forward. Its not to bad anymore

Tan arms is tradition. I can never see blue arms as anything other than a miscolor. Like a mistake you'd see in early archie comics which was pretty frequent. I have to say I like the tan arms always saw sonic with them and changing it did feel a bit weird but I am fine if the movie series and other media have blue arms but I always think the main series should keep the tan arms since its part of his iconic design since the 90s. That's just my opinion 😁

Peach arms are iconic of Sonic's character and one of the most recognizable parts of his appearance, and it makes him less simplistic and more out-of-common, and it ajouts a plus to the "bad boy" he was thought for. Removing them is like removing the blue color of his fur or his monoeye. People wanting Sonic to keep blue arms don't know his character at all.

Gamerguyd7aces had a video a long while back that the reason Sonic and Amy had bare arms compared to Shadow and Silver were that they were a rare species of hedgehog called Madras hedgehogs from India, while Silver and Shadow were common hedgehogs.

Short Answer: For me, blue arms. At first I didn't like it but it grew on me. Most of us grew up on the tan arms, but ever since the blue arms were introduced...the tan arms look naked to me now. After watching both sonic movies, I see that video game sonic is overdue for an updated look. Video game Sonic just looks outdated next to movie Sonic. Movie sonic has a lot more detail and realism to him that the video game version desperately needs. SA2 Sonic's design is hands down the best and most unique look Sonic ever got in my opinion (Sonic Riders look aside).

I think you might be suggesting that SEGA change Sonic's arm color, but sadly (for you, that is), that's not gonna happen. He's had the tan arms for a long time and it would be weird to change them.

@@imasonicfan7778Perhaps so, but it still doesn't change the fact SEGA's Sonic needs an update on his look. Even Mario, as basic as his design is also got a detail upgrade in Super Mario Odyssey. So far, Sonic Frontiers is still using the same Sonic model (slightly tweaked). I'm hoping they give us a way to customize his look similar to Link in BOTW at least.

@@myoung4280 I don't think SEGA is making ANY major changes to Sonic's design. I mean, they might slightly alter the shade of blue, maybe? But that's it.

In my opinion Sonic with blue arms is better (only in 3D) it makes Sonic fit in more with the other characters and it's (technically) still something new to get use to and I like new things it also makes him more like a real hedgehog

In my opinion, both could work well as long as it’s consistent. I don’t care if people get Sonic’s arm color wrong but if they’re making like an animation or a comic where his arm colour just changes at random, then i get kinda annoyed.

My stance is that for more 2d and simple sonic designs, tan arms works best, but for more 3d stylised and complex designs, blue arms is better
