@ I honestly think it would be fine if it actually did make the room look smaller/ feel more snug. It’s a massive room! Plus, it’s gets a lot of light during the day.

Once the wallpaper is off, you should hire Simon or Yanis to put a fresh skim of plaster on the walls to give you a smoother surface to paint. When they did that plaster work years ago, it wasn't as smooth as what they have on the market today. I feel it will help you feel better about how it looks. I love the color!😊

It probably comes up darker on camera but it would make a bedroom beautifully cosy and a very bold statement with Navy and gold. That's what a chateau is all about. Love darker colours in certain spaces like bedrooms and libraries. My fave is dark green. This blue suits you your face lights up. So good choice.

I have a very old house that requires LOTS of wallpaper removal. Once the wallpaper is off, a skim coat of wall joint compound is required. If not, you're painting on a very rough surface that will not take in the paint evenly. I hope this helps, Phil. Godspeed

I noticed all the nicks and gouges in the wall with the dark blue paint. Opinion is for a thin coat of plaster to hide the imperfections before you paint in the dark blue.

Go for it Phil! You're not moving a load bearing wall, you're painting. If you don't love it at the end - change it. I don't know how much you know about using dark paint colors but you'll probably want to prime the walls with a tinted primer and then paint. The quality of the primer and paint will determine how streaky, patchy, or lovely the end result will be. Can't wait to see the progress!

Helped my parents renovate a 100+ year old house many years ago, and I currently live in another 100+ year old house myself. Both are all lathe and plaster and some rooms I removed up to 6 layers of wallpaper!😱 Lots of plaster, spackle and paint work under my belt, though I'm not a professional. However, from the texture that I'm seeing on your walls, I'd be asking Simon skim it all with plaster first. Then prime before you paint, I know it's more work, but it's worth it!! Otherwise it'll just be a splotchy, uneven mess.

I love the colour. It’s dark but a great compliment to the cream and gold and the fireplace. And the room is so large that the dark walls will work beautifully. And even if I didn’t like it, do what makes you happy! At the end of the day it’s just paint.

I think you need a warmer navy, one with more red in it. I love navy and I think the room will be stunning. Do you have paper paint swatches at the shop maybe get a bunch and pin them up with a space in between. T like others have said already as long as you love it that what matters… so excited to see the room all done up.

Having gone to some interior design courses 20 years ago the most important thing I took away is that paint is about the easiest thing to change if you don’t like it. So if you like the blue go for it, you can always change tack half way through if it seems too dark, your house, your life. Bottom line when my marriage split up after 12 years the first thing I did was paint every room in the house the way I wanted including getting rid of a lot of pink in the bathroom, bedroom and loo !! I felt better after every room 😀 - put your stamp on it Phil

I am a firm believer in creating a bedroom for yourself. Sure, you can make the public areas more neutral but if you want a safe haven in your bedroom, paint it the colour that will make you happy and relaxed. I agree, creams, golds or silvers will go well with the paint.

You need a good skim of plaster and then a flat grey primer then the colour will look correct. I think you've made a good choice of colours. One of my favourite combos is the classic blue so dark it might be black (kinda like priest's socks) paired with a bright white trim paint.

Love the blue colour, and the idea of gold and cream complimenting it. When you have done a larger sample and the walls are smoother you will get a better idea. Dark rooms are balanced by great lighting setting a mood in a room is about lighting. I use smart bulbs during the day at 80 or 100% is a very different mood to the evenings when I set it to 10 or 20%.

I didn't need more than two swipes of the brush; I love it and would even go a shade darker, at least to match the hue of the card. It's great to hear you positively chipper for a day. Oh, and I do like that embedded light ring on your new sanding gadget too.😉👍

As others have said, a light skim coat of plaster/joint compound (sanded) followed by a good primer and then two coats of paint should work well for you. The dark colour will show dings and dents underneath. Then, judicious use of accent lighting and your room should be gorgeous!

I agree ask Yannis and Simon for a plaster coat and then go with the navy color as I absolutly love it. I love the dark navy color for your room as it is my favorite one and it works with the gold and the color of the fireplace. Maybe Even more if you guild that gold up Like Patrick and Stuart have done it. The wardrobe with some Gilboys wax would work together then nicely I think. This Room asks for boldness and I can say only go go go even that I know it takes a bit time till all will be done I can‘t wait to see the outcome ❤❤❤

I support whatever you go with in terms of color. You home, time, money. I have a suggestion, if you permit. There is a major feature in the room that could give you the best color cues, all natural. It's the marble mantlepiece. It isn't going anywhere. Go with that strength. According to color advice from Mario Buatta, who decorated very grand homes, start with a dominant print (chintz, marble, carpet, etc.) Locate the color that there is the "least of" in the pattern. Paint your walls that color. Look for inspiration in the marble's "variations". This "rule" works. I've found some surprising colors that pop. Many compliments, too.

So, about the colour, i think it is a fitting colour for a dark academia atmosphere you seem to be going for. Paint all the wall in this colour; in case you judge it a bit too dark in the end a solution could be to create some simple panelling: with the inside of the panel surface 2 shades lighter of the darker, wich would become be the spacing between the panelling: the panel border could be a simpel flat moulding in the darker of the 2 colours. In any case i would do a very light replastering, in the sence of filling the biggest surface irregularities, because you see these better at daytime when you have dark coloured walls. I know it means a bit more work, and needs a slight sanding afterwards.

In doing a bit of research I noticed that most old chateaus did not have white ceilings it was the ceilings that were painted, decorated with colour to warm the room. Woodwork was left natural or painted a lighter colour or a shade of white. Don't be afraid to paint the ceiling dark blue and the walls a bit lighter. It will give you the cozy feeling you are looking for.

Of and a thick renovation paper over the walls will take care of the uneven wall. I don’t know what it’s called in English . It’s not exorcise and easier to put up than to sand it to perfection or skim it. Here it’s called renovating paper
