they chose to overlook the previous three decades of trial and errors when they put the communist theory into practice. their hard work and suffering under severe sanctions and embargo.

I was posted to China to work from 2013 to 2015 to Wuhan but travelled widely to different cities and countrysides by rail. Yang's account is so dystopic and her interpretation of events in China is really negative. It's completely contrary from my interaction with my Chinese colleagues I worked with and the people I met. The place where I worked even though it was outside the Wuhan central district was vibrant, with shopping centres and apartments constructed in record times. Walmart and Carrefour outlets sprang up in Wuhan during the period I was there. Pollution and corruption were huge problems then. Xi made noticeable change to these two problems. For those reasons, I observed my Chinese colleagues were more positive about Xi than with previous Presidents. This contradicts the assertion of mainstream media's portrayal of Xi as being oppressive and ideological. I just wonder with what lenses Yang has been looking through for such a depressing outlook of China. Has she surrounded herself with Chinese dissidents in the US?

But what is China now, after Xi, rather than before Xi?

I would not give one word from Ann's mouth on China a drop of credence. Very myopic, and over simplistic.

Ms Anne, you are spewing garbage about China's economy situation during the 1998 Asian Financial crises. As according to Paul Gruenwald and Jahangir Aziz, in the IMF report, China's economy was doing good during that period and even better than all other Asian economies. China even helped Malaysia stabilized it currency during that period and helped it to come out of the problem earlier than other countries that took IMF help.

17:10 Export driven economy... Well what u expect... at some saturation point of too much population there is no inland/domestic economy. Only hope is the outside world .. who offers ur manual work.. And still at slaves wages.. cause to many compete for same job. So only factory owners china, the state and foreign brand names investors make a lot of money... due to cheap labour... see adidas to Nike, clothing industry... And also if blue collar workers in the west their jobs went overseas... t hen in the end after 4 decades mass unemployment in the west.. they have no buying power anymore... To buy even cheap produced goods from china.. And so thus also profits goes down for local chinese factory owners, international brandnew investors form the west (western Elites) and taxes also go down for Chinese govenment. Plus some cheated during Mao's days of power and 1 child policy... see 1950 same as Kamasutra India from 300 million 10 now 1.3 billion is an anomaly compared also tp 10.000 years before of agriculture instead of hunter gatherer.. Best thing is slow economy... but when it comes to spikes in economy .. there will also be quick valleys on the curve.../graph... Due to western consume pattern based on large amounts of energy... This people/country makes sure that in 40 years all global oil will be gone.. Plus they bred like rabbits and now to double again population numbers aint feasible anymore.. Same as Africa.. on food aid and decolonisation from 100 million to now 1 billion and soon 4 billion.. I bet a lot of tears and blood will follow... the only way they can take it a bit further is to extort the west with use of nucleair weapons as a threat... To feed their populations ... Cause Russia, Ukraine, Europe, US have surplus... food foodproduction.. Another sad thing due to fossile fuel use/energy... is the exploding cities and newly build in south america/brazil... They destroy the Amazone so they can feed their oversized grown population/cities... Best thing is end of fossile fuel.. Back to 1 or 2 hp economies.
