I think in Mauritania in a desert which has perfect measurements and circles of Atlantis (as we think the measurements look like). And by that time, Africa was only known as northwestern Africa, also by then called Libya, which makes even more sense that Atlantis is west of Africa, if it is in Mauritania. 🤗🇲🇷🏝 Edit: You did not see my very Swedish username on KZbin!

Funnily enough, the sunken island of Numenor in Tolkien's Middle Earth also got the name Atalante (the "Fallen") which derived from the Quenya verb atalta- ("break down"). In some greek myths Herakles takes over the heavens of Atlas, when he needs to get the golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides for one of his twelve tasks. In some versions of the myth, Herakles build the pillars of Hercules around the street of Gibraltar that hold up the heavens, to free Atlas from his burden for helping him (but after deceiving him into taking back the weight of the heavens). "Atlas, your technique is so wonderful, I could never bare the weight as good as you do, can you show me how it's done?" Atlas was known for being the God of courage, but lacked the intelligence and wisdom of his brother Prometheus, so he was easily fooled. The sons of Lapetus are often seen as the "worst qualities of men"; betrayal and trickery (Prometheus), stupidity and thinking after acting (Epimetheus), being overly courageous (Atlas) and unnecessary violence (Menoetios).

Like "Thraserville" for instance. I don't remember, if it was because you'd get a good thrashing, if you went there, or if it had something to do with the Georgia State bird, the brown thrasher? Originally, what would become Atlanta was sort of a shantytown with kind of rough hewn railroad workers, so maybe they had a reputation for giving out thrashings? Do you know, where the name "Thrasherville" came from? I believe, that it predated "Terminus".

Maybe Mauritanians adopted the story of Greeks about the Titan Atlas when Romans conquered them? Cause Mauritania actually is a Greek-root name, comes from Maurousii which simply means “of black color”. So the is some connection with Greek stories as both Atlas (= the ones who bears a suffering) and Mauritania come from Greek words

It is theorized only by one person using pseudoscience to make a fake story. Geologists and other scientists have checked the area, nothing man made ever existed there, no trace. Beside some cave paintings of prehistoric people and curved stones, no signs of city or technology. And there is no evidence that 11000 years ago west Africa was under water. Number 1: So the Ancient World definitely knew about the Atlantic Ocean WAY before the Romans and the Greeks. The Phoenicians were ancient sea farers who made it to the Atlantic ocean and traveled up and down the European and African coasts. The Phoenicians were also known to the Greeks. Number 2: King Atlas was the legendary King of Mauretania, just south of the Atlas mountains. In fact the North west part of Africa became known as his region, even in Greek myths. So Atlas was king of Mauretania, Atlantis, and supposedly was turned into the Atlas mountain range in Africa by Perseus, according to Ovid, who flew home by way of Aethiopia. He had been connected with the Hesperides, "Nymphs" which guarded the golden apples, and Gorgons both of which lived beyond Ocean in the extreme west of the world since Hesiod's Theogony. Diodorus and Palaephatus mention that the Gorgons lived in the Gorgades, islands in the Aethiopian Sea. This King Atlas of Mauretania was credited by Greek historian Diodorus with inventing the Celestial Globe. Number 3: Atlas the titan was condemned by Zeus to stand at the western edge of Gaia (the Earth) and hold up the celestial sky globe on his shoulders. Heracles later drops by to steal some apples and Atlas tried to trick Heracles into holding the sky up. Heracles tricks Atlas back, but ends up building the pillars of Heracles to liberate him. There just seems to be too much for this to be a completely fictional story and for it two be two separate individuals. They both are connected to celestial globes and are located in North Western Africa according to both African and Greek accounts, and there's a mountain range there bearing his name. Honestly, there was probably once a man who was a shepherd king (oldest myths he was a shepherd and the shepherd/king was a common Ancient near east motif) named Atlas who was a leader/king in NW Africa and lead the field in Astronomy. That's my best guess. He must have been quite remarkable as both African civilizations and Greek civilizations made a big deal out of him.

Probably Atlas was a real ancient king who was made into a God by future generations. Perhaps he ruled from the Richat Structure, or the area around it, and in that area there was a legend of an ancient city that became the basis for Atlantis centuries later. I say this in this particular way because it seems that neolithic tools and other such evidence of habitation has been found there, but no evidence of an actual city, though it would be understandable that, upon seeing the structure, one would think that there had once been an ancient hyperadvanced port there. The reality is the "Atlanteans" were probably just a North African tribe, or their imagined ancestors.
@annas48433 жыл бұрын
😂😂😂😂😂 He ruled from the middle of nowhere where Greeks though nothing existed down there. And ofc he happened to have a Greek name somehow, in middle of nowhere for Greeks in African tribe, but sure with a Greek name somehow 😂😂😂 Atlas means the ones who bears a suffering cause Atlas bears the weight of sky on his shoulders.
