I'm always kinda confused why we don't use the guillotine more often. Wouldn't that make for a nice straight and clean cut if you drop the blade from high enough?

That's the problem - when you amputate a limb, you need a good sized flap of skin to close the wound over the remaining bone. A guillotine would cut the skin, muscle, and bone all at the same point, and leave nothing to close with.

@@OriginalGriff Hm you could achieve that with a stopping block no? Have the blade stop at the last 1/5th of the limb and then cut a skinflap from the (almost) removed limb.

@@Pumbear To the best of my knowledge, they cut all the "meat" around the bone below the point at which they will cut the bone, and peel it back to get enough skin flap to cover the bone end. Then they cut the bone, smooth the edges, and shape the muscles to get a good fit to a prosthesis before closing the skin flap(s) over it all.

I almost got circumcised by mistake. I went in for a nose operation and was in a bed in one corner of the ward, but a man who was supposed to be having a circumcision hadn't turned up. But he was supposed to be in the opposite corner and so they'd mixed us up. They only realised because the anaesthetist came to talk to me and asked a few strange questions, so I asked about the name of the operation and he said "A circumcision" and I said "NO IT'S NOT!!!", and a different patient (and his girlfriend) burst out laughing 😂
