Hey Guys, another great show. Question, just starting my seed trays for my fall transplants. I can’t believe how fast the Cheers Cabbage and Green Magic Broccoli popped up and the germination is unreal. Any tips to ensure that they make it to transplant size? Cheers, Dave

Fertilize them when they form the second set of leaves. Mix a tablespoon of 20-20-20 per gallon of water and fertilize at least once a week.

I just wanted to thank you both for all the great information you share. I’ve been binge watching your videos and they are packed FULL of great information. I have a question for ya since you fellas have been at this so long. I have MS and I use my garden as part of my therapy. I have raised beds but even they are a struggle. They’re all about 4x4x12. I want to rip them out this fall and go more narrow and taller. Reaching over the 4 foot bed is a struggle for me, especially when some things start to get really big. Also the 12 inch height is too short for me now. Bending over is really hard on my stiffest days. My question is to filling them. If I raise them to 3 feet filling them with all compost is going to be expensive. Im on a tight budget now that I’ve retired. I’m also just a backyard gardener. I don’t have a lot of yard waste to fill the bottoms with old logs and branches. I have some of course but just not near enough. Do y’all have any ideas? I apologize for this being long but I wanted to give ya a decent “picture“ since it’s an odd question. I don’t want to give up my garden. It keeps me moving, brings me joy and honestly now that my children are grown, it’s my “company.” It’s also nice to share it with my grandchildren when they come. It tickles me to teach them and watch they’re excitement as things grow and change. Anywhooooo! I’ve troubled you enough. Thank you for all you do. I’m truly grateful for any suggestions at all. You can fill them mostly with topsoil, then add a 5-6" layer of compost on the top.

That's not ripe. We eat them, but I"m just working on growing them. Flesh turns white with a tinge of orange at the seed cavity when it's perfect. Flesh melts in your mouth and much sweeter than watermelons we've been buying out here. The outer skin turns almost crayola yellow. I'm new to growing them, so I'm not sure if they cure a bit to get to that stage. I'm guessing not... but will be learning. Thanks for sharing your experiences, since I too am learning to grow them.

If they are bush butterbeans, they might not. If they are climbing or running butterbeans, they should start producing again once temps cool a bit.

Ours usually don't make it to the dried stage because we eat them, but the Christmas Lima makes a great dried bean!

Have you guys heard of the biological control of pests with nematodes, it is natural way, chemical free to deal with many garden pests, everyone knows about ladybirds being used on many commercial crops in CA, little less knows are Nematodes, the market is booming and as you already use bees and seem to be mindful of the environment, it could be a potential way to offer additional options to control pests.

I have heard of using beneficial nematodes to manage harmful nematode populations in the soil. But not sure how nematodes would have any impact on flying insects that attack the plants above the ground.

They're planted quite a ways apart and the melons were pollinated before the cucumbers started flowering.

Thanks for all the info as always. I have a corn question, for years we planted a combination of silver queen and merit corn. My husband doesn’t care for the super sweet varieties and this was the perfect solution for us, sweet enough and easy silking with the appealing bi- colored kernels. What happened to the merit corn? I understand it’s one of those big companies that has put an end to it. Is it a money thing or what?

We have tried to find some Merit corn, but have not been able to acquire any. Not sure why it's not as prevalent. Most folks (backyard gardeners and market farmers) are going to the sweeter varieties mainly due to storage potential. It sure makes it nice when you have a longer window for eating, selling or freezing the corn.

Hey y'all what about these no heat variety of jalapenos? I am trying to grow some but they just are not putting on fruit. What do you think? Also, do fig trees get too old to fruit? I have a brown turkey that has not put on any figs in 3-4 years now. We live in Tulsa, zone 7a and they got frozen to the ground a couple of times and we had to prune them back severely.

Any reason not to give August pole beans a hair cut? My Rattle Snake look great maybe too great. Starting to look like kudzu. I hope they start back up in a month but right now they're just growing and weighing down the trellis. I wonder if cutting on them would actually recharge them for later.

Never tried trimming. But all that foliage can make it more difficult to find and pick the beans when they do start making again.

Reports from our membership already indicates that next year will be high demand for seeds -- gardens continuing as well as a significant number of expansions. In today's video, Jess from ROOTS AND REFUGE just cautioned her viewers to save seeds and indicated that seed suppliers will experience high demand again. Hope this helps to answer your question. While some varieties are more limited than normally, we haven't noticed a significant shortage in seeds. Seed companies are just having a hard time keeping seeds packed in small quantities for backyard gardeners .

Love the show but u said u are wasting your time saving non hybrid seeds. But all the reading and research I've done is as u save seeds and grow them they can climatize to your area. Is that true or not?

There's not much science to support that idea -- simply anecdotal evidence from people with confirmation bias. It could be true, but would likely take many more generations.

Yes, we put them on hortonova and it works great. I would say a 20-30 row is plenty of a family of four to eat fresh. If you're wanting to preserve some, might want to do more than that.

Vines die, fruits will be bright yellow, and the stems will be hardened.

Whiteflies are tough to spray because they move as soon as you approach the plant or spray it. There is a chemical called "Knack" that will work. It's not organic, but it does help if you can get your hands on some.

Hello Travis and Greg. I would love to be able to use drip tape but I have a unique water system. The wells in my area are bad so I have a 1500 gallon water tank that I have water delivered into. Do you have any idea or is there any way to determine approximately how much water is being used when you use drip tape? I have lost several plants this season due to insufficient watering. I’ve had a lot of days in the 90s here in Michigan and very little rain. The drip tape would assure my plants are receiving his freshwater and enable me to put my focus on other projects going on. But I do need to have some kind of idea how much water it would be using. Thank you so much.

The output on our tape is .4 gal/min per 100 ft. of tape. So if you know how much tape you'd be using (how many rows and how long each for each row), then you'd be able to determine your water output per hour.

The tissue cultures take a long time to form hard wood that you could use for cuttings -- several years in most cases. Whereas cuttings will produce lots of hard wood in the first year.

Yes, but your timing needs to be even more precise because they maturity date will be shorter.
