I have found the HD controller can affect performance as well. I run A Dell Precision T5600 Desktop that I installed a PCI LSI PERC controller, with my SSD setup as raid 0. Saw a huge difference versus having the SSD run off the SATA controller on the motherboard. Your mileage may vary.
