This is a huge misconception that 1947 to 1977 was a golden period under Congress rule. Yes Kolkata was the number 1 city in terms of industries and trade through 1950s but that was all because of the growth and development of the British era but by 1960, through freight equalization and other policies central govt killed heavy industry here. And due to plastic's use , the jute industry died a natural death by 1960.Also Nehru refused to dredge , desilt and clean the Ganga which killed Calcutta port. By 1960, Kolkata was behind Bombay. The rest of Bengal anyway was going through terrible famines and year round floods throughout the Congress rule in the (state + centre).

The decline of Bengal is often linked to the increase of the Muslim workforce in the unskilled sector. The predominance of Muslims in this labor segment has been a factor in altering the political dynamics of West Bengal. Kerala and Kashmir also have dominant Muslim workforce hence you can notice down fall in growth here. Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have large-scale Muslim workforce in unskilled sector, results, all are going to bankrupt. Saudi and UAE has Hindu workforce.

Apart from the undeniable damage done by these political parties, we Bengalis never ventured into business and entrepreneurship. That's why we don't own any business in our own state today. Its a heart wrenching situation. If we, the Bengalis of West Bengal start acting today, we may see an 'of the Bengalis, by the Bengalis and for the Bengalis' business monopoly in West Bengal after eight decades or so.

Literally Bengalis were never competent in business. The community which actually monopolised whole west Bengal or united Bengal were marwaris. In past it used to jagat seth during 70s soorajmal jalan during 90s birlas bagri binanis during 2000s Rama prasad goenka in 2020s it's benu Gopal bangur Ravi modi Sanjiv goenka Madan mohanka and radheshyam Agarwal. @RijanKhanal-jh6t The last sixty years didn't go as per the likings of many Bengalis, including me. But that doesn't mean that the next sixty years will follow suit in that direction. Changing the order of the day may be difficult but not impossible. Here goes a clarion call to all the Bengalis of West Bengal to commence business and entrepreneurship on a war footing. Let's all herald an 'of the Bengalis, by the Bengalis and for the Bengalis' business situation in West Bengal. It may take four to five decades or even more. But there'll be sunshine at the end of the long tunnel.

Another important reason is creation of Bangladesh. 1971 more than 1 crore hindu refugees compelled to come to bengal to save their lives without bringing any resources. Bengal has not recovered from that economic pressure till date as no economic package given to those refugees by Central government.

The economic decline of Bengal has been analysed with a great insight. However, you may have missed some important reasons which added to the decline. 1) Huge influx of refugees post partition increasing the population density. 2) Discriminatory Freight equalization policy of central government. 3) 1956 Industrial policy resolution. 4) Apathy of consecutive central governments to encourage investment in the state. 5) Unrest in the state due to the Naxal movement. Bengal is presently trailing behind the industrialised states by almost 50 years. Yet, we hope a resurgence.
