I used to go to Uncle Charlie's South not far from the Midtown Tunnel. There were young men there, not boys. Even Joel Crothers use to go there. He was really in the closet. I met him. When I asked him if he did soap operas, he said, "Yeah, what about it!" He was angry. If I was 24 in 1979, he was 38. He had a lot to loose if outed. That is why he was so aggressive and paranoid. Obviously he saw me as a threat. Crothers was playing pinball alone in the back which was away from most of the people and darker. I basically shrugged my shoulders and politely said, "Nothing." I was good looking too but knew the consequences of being known to be gay publicly. I walked away but never forgot how angry he was.
