Remember the old days, when a tailgate was exactly just that? Tailgate, handle, rods, latches, and a couple of hinges at the bottom. Relatively inexpensive, simple, and it worked.

Don’t be to hard on yourself, it’s pretty common to see damage on either bumpers or tailgates of trucks due to mistakes made when hook/unhooking. In the 8 years that my girlfriend and I have had RV’s, I’ve damaged one rear bumper and one tailgate… we are human and mistakes happen.. definitely sucks for sure.. but things can be fixed! I’m a truck driver as well for the last 10 years and I still make mistakes.. keep on trucking!

Camper fridge trick....keep it fresh! Put a couple paper plates in compartments and put a couple table spoons arm and hammer backing soda on them. If you catch the small boxes on sale, get one for each compartment and crack them open.

I’m on the road 11 hours a day, 5 days a week and not a day goes by that I don’t see a tailgate with the same dent. Almost think they’re factory installed. Anyway like the comments are saying, it happens to the best of us and you ARE one of the best.

Find a place that sells tailgates and beds that have been removed from trucks because of some kind of conversion and get one and have it painted. New is probably $3k and still needs to be painted. Or claim it on your comprehensive insurance

I kind of did something similar 15 to 20 years ago with my truck. I was out with a buddy of mine at a junk lot looking for parts and got my truck into a small muddy hole and was backing the truck out of the hole and back into a junk car Then I pulled forward it ripped my passenger taillight out plus dented the taillight housing too. We had to run into a town nearby and luckily the auto parts store had one and I duct taped it on so the lights could be usable on the way home. Funny thing was as I pulled forward the taillight house only unplugged at the connector which save it from having all the wires torn out. I ended up having another buddy of mine do the body work by replacing the tailgate and both box side fenders since they were rusting anyways Fast forward to today and the box side fenders are rusting away again but the tailgate is just fine Yeah I have made mistakes too the same and now I have to a complete brake job on a 4 corners of the truck to save some cash I am doing it myself

YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!!!!!! 🤣😂🤣😂 To be real here, I’m SO GLAD you posted this, because I just done the exact same thing last weekend to my new 2022 F450 Limited, THE FIRST NEW PICKUP TRUCK that I’ve ever personally owned!!!! My god I felt so bad, in fact, I was so upset and ashamed that I canceled our entire “glampimg” trip we had planned for Labor Day weekend, my god I was upset! I was backing up to my new Luxe 48’ toy hauler, forgot to lay the fifth wheel plate down because I got distracted, when it missed the fifth wheel plate (that wasn’t there) it slammed the tailgate into the front of my toy hauler, and destroyed the tailgate, was way worse then yours BTW, but I did luck out though, a friend of mine had a 2021 F450 limited, EXACTLY THE SAME COLOR as my truck to boot, he removed his hole bed to go with aluminum flat body (very nice BTW) and he ended up just giving me the tail gate, and I swapped the cameras and everything and made it work, so it really saved my ass. I know you can’t help but kick yourself in the ass, but it’s only a truck, it’ll work out. Lol. I’d hate to know what a quote would cost me up here in Alaska, I hit a moose in my one owner 2016 Ram 5500 I bought out of Washington, that had the G56 manual transmission 4x4, only had 9800 miles on it, drove it 2000 miles home to Wasilla AK, hit a moose 20 miles from the house and they totaled it out, and it was drivable, with only cosmetic damage, for the most part. That was my first new to me truck, I felt good about scoring that, now the damn thing has a rebuilt title.

I’m a CDL driver with 40 years experience and a couple years ago I backed my almost new F150 into a tree with the tailgate down. I took a lot of grief just as you described. Mine was worse than yours. Anyway definitely get several estimates. Honestly it looks like it could be repaired instead of replaced ? Anyway best of luck and awesome 5th wheel 👍

Isn't aluminum great? That same repair 2 years ago was $1,500. Real world inflation on display. From experience on travel trailers, before you rack up some miles, get the axles aligned. Most are significantly off that will cause one tire to wear to the point, it will be cupped or heavily worn probably on the inside. Other than keeping cost down, the manufacturer should have added a third axle especially with the rear garage. Oh, it appeared that you left the light in the pantry on, unless it automatically turns off when the door is closed.. OBTW, a warranty on a RV is as worthless as windshield wipers on a motorcycle. RV's have the highest consumer complaints and dissatisfaction with customer service.

Why bother fixing it, trucks get dents. Alumaduty trucks you look at them the wrong way you get a dent. Red is the worst color for me Id never own a red pickup. My favorite color is antimatter blue. My current 2016 F350 is oxford white its okay kinda plain, what ever its my work truck.

Watch the windows I use to work for KZ and had a lot of issues with windows leaking during Covid cuz we’d get windows from like 5 different suppliers just to slap something in them cuz we had over 300 units in the rv yard with cardboard over the windows until we get another load but them was definitely chop shop together during Covid I’d check out Brinkley RV hear them are top of the line units right now for quality

Anyone that owns or owned a camper has hit something!! I've seen people turn to tight backing and hit the tailgate, bed, or cab and damage truck and trailer. Personally, I went down our road and someone parked on side of street so that I couldn't make the turn so I started backing up and heard the noise nobody wants to hear. 3 mailboxes on 1 post/beam and I got 2 of them and put a hole in the side of the 1 year old camper 🤡 Worst part, I'm a truck driver 😂

Some lady asked me for help to move her truck and trailer home thinking that driving a class a truck is the same. It is not the same thing. Did it help me make an extra sixty bucks yes but it was a little trick as I wasn’t used to the turn radius. It was also pouring rain. Accidents happen to everyone.

I did similar when my son did latch the gate tight and it lowered while driving and I hit the jack on the trailer I was pulling. Lucky the plastic cover was all I needed to repair the dent was so small you cant see it.

I would not even worry about fixing it, if it would all be coming out of your pocket. The tailgate is working fine, and it does not look that bad to me. $2300-$500 deductable = $1800 that your insurance should pay. Why spend money you don't have to, right? Thanks for sharing!

I did the same thing years ago. Backing around the property with lots of trees and knew they were there. I was also trying to keep an eye on our toddler that was running around the yard and missed seeing one of the trees cross my mirrors. Lucky I didn't have my tailgate down so it was just a dent in the bumper.
