Alex I know this is old. But the next time you take baseboards off. run a utility knife across the top of the baseboard so when you pull it off part of the wall won't come with it. And also your doing a hell of a job! That's a lot of hard work.

We restored a house outside of Rothbury. There were 9 fireplaces. We reduced down to 6. We moved back to USA. I brought one of the surrounds with me. That was 23 years ago. I am finally using it. We built a home on to of a mountain and the surround has a new home.

Cut the plasterboard first instead of just breaking it. Will save on your back❤ once your fireplace opening is exposed, maybe you could use an electrical insert fireplace / heater. It’s going to look great after you finish with your room. 🎉

Reveal the fireplace for ambience and the history and then use an electric look-a-like fireplace insert in the space. No muss, no dirty walls, no hauling chopped wood or coal. Easy peasy. Love and hugs from me in New Mexico USA.

Could also use a cast iron wood burning stove with glass door (the type used a lot on narrowboats). While not as clean as electric it would keep the room dry and warm.

Little tip when removing skirting boards (as you call them) or socket covers use a utility knife to score around it or the top so that when you pry it off you won't pull paint chips off the wall. :)

I think there was a span of time from the 1800's to maybe the 1950's where people thought gloss paint was more hygienic. It's easier to wipe down and keep clean than other surfaces. That's why gloss is good for kitchens, but they may have been a little obsessive about it in the past. I've stripped so many old gloss surfaces in my life! Anyway, I can't wait to see the stone surround restored. It'll be so cozy. Maybe you can put one of those electric fireplaces inside.

As you are removing material, look for loose stones, bricks, or rocks as they were often used for hiding valuables behind or under. If no one told the family, and the person died, they could still be hidden. Look for anything that appears out of place or the ordinary. I know of one fireplace that was put in in the 1960's where the children hid money and toys under a slate slab that they placed and the mason unknowingly bricked up over the top while they were in school the next day.

This is so exciting! I love old home renovations! I once lived in a house that had a secret tunnel. One large floor tile in a closet was removable and you could drop down and crawl through to come out in a false wall in the basement. I often wondered if it was part of the "Underground Railroad" here in the US. Anyway, we're all only residents of a property for part of its history and then someone else comes along only to wonder about the people before them.

You are such a hard worker Alex. Both you and Gail are. So seeing you go off for a lovely ride out was lovely. I'm sure you enjoyed it immensely. Plus you went home baring flowers from the elder. So later on you will have lovely elder flower drinks to enjoy. 😋 Finding old fire places is an exciting experience. We found 5 in all, in our old 1890s terraced house. The one in our back room is massive. We presume it was where they would have cooked thier food. Its a domed fire place and we love it. Now its all cleaned up and has a wood burner inside the space. Its a really large opening, about 5 ft wide and high. All the fire places were well worth opening. We found grates in two. The ones in the bed rooms are just for show for now, but we do use the back toom and front toom fire places in the winter to keep warm. Both have wood burners. I'm really enjoying seeing the way your bedroom is developing Alex. Its going to be beautiful, I'm sure of it. Keep at the good work luv. It will be so worth it in the end. Plus you can tell everyone, you did it all yourself. Be proud of that. X

At least it could allow for an electrical log set or it could be staged to hold faux flame candles (always best in households with pets). 🙀 Cannot wait to see all of your decorations and furnishings. How about that for a cliffhanger?! This fireplace uncovering will be fun to watch! It’s so exciting to uncover treasures like this…we found two beautiful stained glass inset windows in our first house (which was from the 1920’s). They had filled them in with newspaper, and chickenwire and plaster. My husband took it all out on our first day in the house…the day we got our keys. He later framed them out and they were a real feature in our beautiful old house. I hope your fireplace will be all that you hope for. You and your Mum do such fine work, and painstaking work, as well. Good for you! It will all be worth it!

Your house is so cool! I love to see you fixing it up into a warm, welcoming home. I imagine that when you’re done, walking in the house will feel like walking into a warm hug! Edited to add: Would you and your mom want to tell us a bit about the history of the house? How old the original house is, and the additions? I am a child of America’s west coast. I have lived in California for the past 40 years. My house would be considered old here. It was built in the 60’s! We also own a historic ranch in the local mountains. The pioneer cabin was built in 1912. So truly old houses, like yours are fascinating to folks like me, who love history, but don’t get much opportunity to explore it locally. Did Gail grow up there? What crops were grown?

I need to make a wee little suggestion, Alex, you have just uncovered a golden opportunity for a hidey hole for valuables etc. If possible put a board or bottom of some sort across the opening in the bottom of the hole, enlarge the plaster? opening around it, put a shelf or 2 in and figure out a "decorative" wooden panel or something for the front that will fit in to your vision for the room, I can almost see a reading nook in that corner with book shelves, a few panels of wainscoting maby, a lamp and a comfortable chair. To open or close the access, How about a magnet closure? Hidey holes are very handy Just a thought from a old prepper in the states. You and your Mum are making fabulous progress with updating the "ole girl" and if the spare room is an indication of what you have in mind for your personal haven, its going to be fabulous, Remember, make YOURSELF happy with it. WE are only along as virtual guests and do not live there and will probably never see it again when your done. Best Wishes
