I know it is too late but put deck lighting on lower wire lead. Also put a video camera where you can view coral heads as you sail and check rig chafe! Massive time saver. Luv your channel.

Two things that I never use are butt connectors and pop rivets. Those washers for pop rivets are actually intended to go on the back side typically with softer material like rubber, plastic or fiberglass. I prefer using closed end rivnuts for all of my fastening needs and if you ever need to remove the mounted object you can simply remove the screws or bolts and reinstall them when done. The other nice thing about rivnuts is you do not have open holes if you remove whatever is mounted and you can put the screws back into the threaded inserts to give a nice clean look. Instead of butt connections I use Deutsch connectors for everything and they seal amazingly well. When they are crimped using the proper crimper from the manufacturer you will never have a bad connection and you can easily unplug it for service.

So do you need some type of gasket or sealant for the steaming light to prevent water from getting into the mast?

With the Wire Protector sheathing (25:30) if you cut it with a hot knife (for cutting ropes) or with a heat gun just after cutting it normally on the very end, it melts some of the threads of the sheathing together and will then not fray but you can spread them to still stretch the sheath over the wires.

I with you about the left handed. I've been left handed for over 82 years. Have used the same left handed hammer you have and several other 😂. Good thing about the one you used is that you were using it the US size, if you turn the cutter side around it will be metric hammer. 😂

I hope you don't mind a couple of observations. A, you did a good job on connecting the deck/steam light, but why didn't you use tinned cable?. B, if you use something in the lower hole just beneath the deck light isn't if going to block the light. Great content and have followed this build from the start and must say you did a great job on the hulls.

Ty..great install. Personally, I am not impressed with the steaming/deck light combo. We will see what you think when changing headsails on a dark passage. I also wish the radar didn't have to be forward of the mast. I assume the issue is a mast shadow in the radar sweep? Given the radar has to be there, I would run a direct bury (heavy jacket) cat 6 ethernet cable up to that extra hole for a POE camera. Great for narrow channels, reefs and moorings.

To let you know a direct lighting strike will still fry as many electronics, with or without lightning protection. When you buy a lighting system ask them if they will pay for any electronics if its fried from lightning. They will tell you no and that is because they know it doesn't do anything except make them money. nothing can stop 1 plus million amps from going where it wants to on a boat. Even super yachts can not handle a lightning strike without frying electronics. The only way to help is have 2 separate systems where most are not on the same circuit as your VHF/Wind/radar and anchor light are on. Those things you know will fry. lightning can jump a foot easy.

You need to deburr the holes before installing the rivets. Otherwise the rivets will not get a good grip and work themselves loose over time.

I’m a lefty and proud of it. Everybody gives me crap all the time. I work in the construction trade and it was absolutely hilarious. About two weeks ago. A friend of mine. That is a Milwaukee fan boy which I am as well but he wanted to get the new Worm gear circular saw, and I guess he didn’t realize it until he got it. That is actually a left handed saw and I think it’s soon to be mine because he can’t stand being right handed.

They make a self centring centre punch that you put in the screw hole and activate and punches for you and that allows you to do all the holes very well centred and reduce deviations. I have one made by Starrett I use for my millwrighting but I am sure there is china knockoffs that are very cheap.

Why not back up the rivets with silicone to help hold the light on the mast. As the plastic deteriorates from UV the silicone will only help and is cheap insurance.

Personally I am surprised ya didnt at minimum silicone that hole in the mast before riveting that light in...#1 its definitely an invite for water to get in that's a 100% in a huge rain storm, which never happen on the east coast and #2, there's no way bees will find that attractive for a hive location, while close to land ? ;) Just saying.....

Could you use the upper light hole in the mast for a movable remote spotlight??
@gbsailing9436
@gbsailing9436 Жыл бұрын
I would have mounted the mast light in the lower position because whatever you put below the light now, (Camera, etc.) may well obscure the throw of the light over the deck to an extent and will now throw a shadow over a large area due to the proximity of whatever you fit there (Camera, etc.) over the deck. Still, not hard to drill out the rivets and move it. Will having ALL those holes around the spreader 'and' radar mount not weaken the mast in that region? I was also thinking of a 'flagging' sail over the years causing a lot of vibration up and down the mast and was thinking the radar mount should have some dampening underneath it so the metal on metal wear doesn't make the rivets loose over time...No? Ty, let me know if this fear is unfounded.

That strut isn't shaped to the mast very well. The ears on the mast light could be trimmed to fit the curvature of the mast and new holes in the light.

Just wondering about the mast light, if there was a watertight seal around the hole for the wires? if water runs down the mast and hits the wire it will guide it down the wires inside the mast. From the video it did not look like it.

Being left handed can be a challenge at times. You either have to get stuff that is made specifically for lefties or adapt to how the rest of the world does things. For my self I learned to play guitar right handed but I still "air guitar" left handed. I have since tried to play a left handed guitar but haven't managed to make things work the other way round. Nice to see that work is picking up pace on the 50. Tough loss on those batteries though. Are you going to be getting replacements or just sticking with what you have? I know they aren't cheep but with out them how bad is it for you and what you will be needing power for?
