Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest countries and throughout history has frequently been subject to the squabbles between its powerful neighbours. This was no different in the Second World War, where, just as in the First World War, Luxembourg's neutrality was violated by Germany, who invaded and annexed the country for around 4 years. Some in Luxembourg welcomed annexation into Germany and served in the Wehrmacht, many, most however, did not. There was an active resistance movement against the German Occupation, and indeed some of Luxembourg's soldiers even escaped to fight alongside Allied Forces in Britain and with the Liberation of Europe.
