@@mortal19901001 oh dear, someone has taken my comment seriously. Luxembourg has a standing army of approximately 550 personnel. It was commendable of the country to send a portion of it's army to assist the UN efforts in Korea in 1950-53, but their efforts would have been nothing compared to the thousands of US, UK and other nation's troops that were fighting to stop a Communist takeover of the South. It would be a similar situation if another conflict started on the Korean peninsula and Luxembourg was to commit forces there again.

The country used to have one of the worst male life expectancies in the 1960s due to the large number of ore miners. Once the country became a hub of international banking, it has soared to having one of the best standards of living on he planet.

What’s really good about Luxembourg is that if you’re driving from Spain/France to Belgium and on to the Netherlands or vice versa, as I often have been, is that you can fill up your car with petrol at significantly lower cost than in the other countries mentioned. Of course I know that Luxembourg has wider importance (coal, steel etc) as well as being quite beautiful, but from a very selfish point of view its low petrol taxes make it a convenient place to fill up the tank during a lengthy car journey 😂👍.

They almost succeeded. Luxembourg had a referendum in 1919 about it's own future and staying independent largely won out. Otherwise they would possibly have had their way. The Luxembourgers also wanted an economic union with France, who declined. So Belgium instead got an economic union with Luxembourg, which stands to this day btw.

This was mainly due to the fact that luxembourgish people fought the war during the belgian revolution and wanted to be part of Belgium when it was created, this was not done because of the fortress of Luxembourg City, which was occupied at the time by a prussian garnison.

One thing about Luxembourg not mentioned is the fact that the capital city of Luxembourg which is Luxembourg city is basically built on top of a massive rock outcropping from the surrounding areas. This outcropping has many fortifications dug into it, and they are quite siege resistant. They have repelled more sieges than one can count. So this is the main reason why it has survived.

Basically the 4 Basic Languages every Child in Luxembourg speaks at the age of 16 + Portuguese 'para a familia'. After this some conversations are over, overall when they ask me to prove my knowledge: I crushed their pride of knowing 2 max 3 languages (french, english, maybe dutch), whereas the 2 foreign languages they often just know to use in a very broken way.

Fun fact: Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, did not just "die", he was killed in battle. He wanted his "kingdom" to extend over the entire region between Burgundy and the Netherlands, which meant annexing Lorraine (shown as belonging to him on your map, but he never held to it). Lorraine was at the time split between 5 different duchies and ecclesiastical principalities (or "Prince-Bishoprics"... that's a mouthful) under either the Holy German Roman Empire or the Kingdom of France. In the end Charles was killed in the battle of Nancy against Lorrain, Alsatian and Swiss forces, and his body was found several days later, already damaged by wolves. And after Charles' Death, Burgundy never regained the power it had had throughout the Hundred Years' War and ceased to be a thorn in the King of France's side.

I love how Luxembourg decided after being conquered twice since it’s independence, to renounce neutrality and decided that little Luxembourg wasn’t going to let it happen again. And since WW2 Luxembourg has sent its troops to major conflicts and wars and developed a program in which its citizenry would basically become resistance fighters in the event of occupation. Luxembourg was one of many NATO members to send its troops to Korea, and their most famous foght was the Battle of the Imjin River in which the combined Belgian/Lixembourgish troops held off waves of Chinese assaults. Since then Luxembourg has sent UN troops throughout the years even to the present.

@@Zwijger Yeah, and the House of Luxembourg ascendancy only happened b/c the lowly origins of their house made them appealing compromise candidates to the electors of the late middle ages. At this point the HRE was incredibly weak. The legitimate heirs to the Empire, the descendants of Frederick II, had been disinherited by the Pope, so a number of families vied for the title of King of the Romans. The Nassaus, the Habsburgs, the Luxembourgers, and an English prince all held the title at one point or another.

Then if France did not matter, how they came to have the second largest colonial Empire in the 19th/20th centuries. Why did they invent the car, plane, metric system, vaccines, radioactivity, photography and so on... Why they forged many countries by helping them to be independent (Belgium, Italy, Greece...). Speaking of Nassau, what about a segment explaining why Baarle-Herzog and Baarle-Nassau exist as such? Other videos exist on the subject, but they tend to be preoccupied by the fact of the weird borders and their legal implications rather than the question of why the weird borders in the first place. I would be interested to hear your take. Thanks!

Luxembourger here, I have some questions. Why do you start your timeline right after we ruled the hre? Why don't you mention our big Fortress? Also Luxembourg didn't join Nato or the eec but was a founding member. Aka it was to some extent our Idea. Like Robert Schumann who was half Luxembourger or the Schengen Agreement named after the luxembourgisch town it was signed in. I don't want to apear as a nationalist, I just want to counterbalance this Image of Luxembourg just getting tossed around with no agency of its own.

(French here) If you take a step back you'll see that Luxemburg exists not because it is a nation or because it makes sense as a state, but as a result of historical contingencies. It is a founding member of NATO and the EU because it agreed to join those organisations that were willing to bring in as many members as possible. Imagining that tiny (and back then impoverished) Luxemburg willed those into existence is just caricatural wishful thinking. Last but not least, the sovereign status of Luxemburg (as well as many other micro-states who just 'happen' to be tax-heavens) right in the middle of the EU is not only puzzling, it is also indicative of a willingness on the part of the rulers of larger states to deliberately allow some white-collar criminal activities to go unchecked. And the citizens of your oh-so-respectable country are handsomely paid to never question whether there's anything fishy going on. For instance the average bus driver makes 45,000 euros in Luxemburg and 25,000 in London (one the most expensive cities in the world). So many multinationals are allowed to divert their benefits into shell companies that have "tax-deals" with your government and as a result pay a very low tax rate, allowing your compatriots to pay very little tax and civil servants to be outrageously overpaid. Those civil servants jobs usually being reserved for native luxemburgers and all the financial engineering being carried out by foreign workers. Maybe you're proud of being from Luxemburg. And that's OK. But personally I don't think I would be.

@@mathieuL2204 First of all, every Nation is formed do to certain external cercumstances. Like France beeing formed thanks to arbitrary splitting Charlemagnes Empire. Second, every country offers favorable tax deals to certain cooperations. I don't like that either but it's wrong to only point at someone else as the cause of the Problem. Why pick only small countrys. What about the Swiss, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Britisch with all their dependencys or Delaware in the US. Everybody is doing it. I agree with you, that it shoudn't happen, but blaming a single country isn't a solution. I didn't say we founded Nato or the Eu on our own. I said some of it was our Idea. We contributed to the Group Projekt that is the EU. Minimum wage in Lux is around 2000 a month or 24000 a year which might seem like a lot, but living here is pretty expensiv. And taxes for privat people are pretty mutch the same as elsewhere.Around 20 to 22 of our Money comes from the Finance sector. The reason is simply that as a small country with few natural ressources, you gotta make your Money with something like tourism, Tech or Banking, which require few ressources and manpower. Again, I am not a Nationalist, and this isn't about pride. It's about corecting the prejufices people like you have and spread. I don't like everything my country does or has done in the past, but you gotta be more nuanced in your worldview.

Fun fact: after the first world war, the allies thought about giving Alsace-Lorraine* to Luxembourg, but France would've been absolutely against this. *that strip of land between germany and france that they passed between each other several times
