There have been two tools I think you should invest in to make some jobs easier. Sadly I made previous comments on older videos and my comments may have been buried. The first one came to mind when the down-pipe got damaged with the tractor. From the lessons taught to me by my Father, was to use the head of a "Crow Bar"(Australian term). They are invaluable in setting fence posts as well. The chisel end can be used for digging in stony ground as well as a crow-bar. The other tool is called a "mattock" in, Australia. It is so useful for digging in hard ground. It has a narrow, heavy duty, hoe like, blade on one side. The other side, is more pick-axe, like, and at 90deg to the blade side. I thought of this when yo were sinking the water diverter, cover, deeper. Just for jobs too inconvenient to do with the tractor. Make certain you go for known quality in such equipment.

Evan ya'll may wanna think about puttin a french drain along that barn and run it right down to your pond and put a gutter downspout if you dont have one yet. but at least give that storm water another place to go cuz those animals hoofs/feet etc will start to rot & abscess. great video, glad your turkey was ok.

I thought of the same thing. If Evan can do that it would really help keep the inside and the back of the barn dry. I put one on my property where it stayed wet years ago and it never wet there anymore.

You are on the right track with the lights on a timer. I have put lights on a timer in early winter and seen egg production jump from almost zero to almost 100% in 2 wks. That was with younger birds. The only reason I keep hens for a 3rd season is if I have special ones for breeding. However, you've missed the boat if you have chickens older than 2 yrs. They are just pets at that point. I am fortunate in having a market (Latinos) for my older birds. If you you are serious about egg production, you need one of the hybrid breeds or white leghorns. If you don't really want eggs, don't worry. Just enjoy the birds you have. Isn't that what it's about anyway?

The duck weed will cover your whole pond again unless you spray it, I use a product called "Reward" it works very good on the duck weed and other weeds in your pond. Since you don't have much duck weed now, I would spray it as soon as you see it growing again. You should be able to get it at any pond store/shop.

Mom ended up with a rescue golden retriever that had been neglected badly for about two years or so where they basically threw food at him but had very little actual interaction. Her friend rescued the dog when the owners moved away and left him chained up in the back yard, but "Buddy" as we ended up naming him didn't get along well with her friend's other dogs. Buddy ended up being so happy to have people pay attention to him that he'd run across the yard and jump at Mom at a dead run. Buddy weighed approximately 150lbs and would actually knock Mom off her feet quite badly. When I saw this, and he tried the same with me, he seemed very confused when I caught him and didn't fall down :) There are very few benefits to being as heavy as I was, but being difficult to knock down is indeed one :) Buddy ended up living with them for another almost fifteen years but died due to a number of medical issues including inoperable hip cancer a couple of years ago now. After they'd had him for a month or so, and got used to being around people who paid attention to him, the only thing he'd directly attack were skunks and tomatoes :) A stray cat somebody threw out ended up sleeping curled up in the fur on his back most of a year.

Yes sir, Hillbilly erosion control! It's amazing sometimes how things can become such a mess. Waaay back in November 1974, my parents bought an old Dairy farm homestead in Western Washington. The farm had been in that family for over half a century and long story short, the surviving family that owned it got into a taxation disagreement and it went delinquent. The 200 acres were parceled out and dad bought the homestead with 30 acres total land for the price of the back taxes. The barns were in a little better condition than you have but the house had to be demolished as the former owners basically used it as a dog kennel. I was just 3 months shy of turning 3yrs old when we moved there and I barely remember that house but it smelled of dog - I remember that! Anyhow, much like your farm, dad spent alot of time removing some old buildings, painting, and cleaning up alot of scattered debris and piled junk. Thankfully, most of it wasn't in the ground like you have but I do still remember after all that cleaning over the years, an old decrepit manure spreader that looked 100 years old still setting in a monstrous patch of stinging nettles when we moved away from there in 1983. Maybe that's why I like your channel so much, because it reminds me of what our family did to clean up that farm so many years ago.

What a great, high protein meal for the dogs. Good idea. I like your farm clean up videos. showing the other junk pile reminded me of those. funny how that generation of farmer did that. our farm had that too when we bought it 25 yrs ago. took a lot of loads to the dump and a lot of fires. Like you... we had multiple old dryers or washers but even worse was the empty food cans and jars. after the big stuff was gone we hired a track hoe to come in, dig a huge hole and scrape up all the remnants (cans, glass, metal) and bury it.

Knowing you both have jobs, it's nice to see you home together relaxing. I was wondering if you could incubate some of those Duck / Turkey eggs ?? .. You can get a lot more chicken eggs if you bring in some leghorn chickens. The meat is OK but not the greatest but they are heavy egg producers and their eggs are very good.

It looks like the retaining wall in the barn has a blocked drainage system or none at all. I wonder if you could poke around below ground outside both sides and see if there is a blocked drainage system and clean it out or failing that, drill a large hole below floor level and get some slotted pipe in as far as possible. PVC with a line of holes or slots in the bottom will do it. Failing that, drill out the perp joints. The water pressure can actually damage the wall or push it over.
@jamesazahn6842
@jamesazahn6842 Жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion, regarding your water problem within your barn shelter. Consider using a masonry drill bit and drill a weeping drain hole to the outside of the wall. That's if the water rest against the inside wall.

Try spraying the duckweed with Flumiguard. One pound would be enough to cover the top water on your pond and you won't have to mess with duckweed all summer. I spray it on in April just as the dw starts growing again. If it starts causing a problem in late summer I will spray again, but usually that doesn't happen.
