I had a friend in high school who would never do his homework and always received 💯 on his tests. He could have graduated at the top of his class and got his college paid for if he just did his homework. Ended up going to college for a couple years, dropped out because he was board. Started a successful business building log cabins and is loving his life.

My teacher was telling a story similar to that. Just because of test being 90% of our grade he would get 100% on those but never do his homework or weekly reviews. (Which are worth twice as much as one homework)

First time in the early 90s I saw a kid in school spinning a cassette on a pencil so he didn't burn his Walkman's battery power to rewind it. BRILLIANT.

One of my uncles became a doctor after serving as a missionary in Japan. During his studies, he picked up Spanish and German. This led to a scene described to me where he was escorting a German doctor through his hospital. The first patient knew only Spanish, and my uncle translated from Spanish to German, and from German to Spanish flawlessly. The second patient was Japanese, and once again, my Uncle translated between Japanese to German. So, naturally, they point him at the Korean patient, and my uncle had to admit that he didn't know Korean.

"gave up skipping class from 3 times a week to 1 time a week for lent" ... "lasted 3 days" I guess technically failing absolutely is also succeeding for a few days

10:20 I've done this before a few times but with phone numbers. It's more a joke than anything, but I did put effort in to remember them. I heard them say a number and before it left my memory I'd repeat it in my head and then again in the evening to help push it into longer-term memory. It's really not that impressive if you put in the effort and a bit of luck to get the initial sequence memorised for long enough to repeat it to yourself. The reason is to use it as a joke. Eg one time I was working for a guy and we were having lunch at a pub. At some point he said he'll give me his number for contact and I just told it to him instead. It was pretty hilarious to see his reaction.

My brother was a super genius. When we were kids he used to train me to remember 13 digit numbers. Idk why 13 digits but he was writing a code and something about that was helpful lol

One of my uncles was studying in college to avoid being drafted for the Vietnam war. He proposed to this girl, who rejected him. He knew this was the girl he wanted to marry, and he became so depressed that his grades slipped and he was drafted into the US Army. The Army gave him an intelligence aptitude test, and he scored the highest score ever recorded at that base. The Army offered him any position he wanted, so he chose something in missile design and testing. This allowed him to stay stateside at a base, rather than being an infantry soldier in Vietnam.
