The Jewish War by Flavius Josephus - This is the ultimate source on the first Jewish War, but the bias is clear and revisionism is definitely in there somewhere (unless Josephus possessed the gift of prophecy and Titus was a real big-dicked badass). Read it with the knowledge that Josephus was trying to not look like a traitor to the Jews AND to the Romans at the same time. It is a book that reads like it was written by a man straddling a tight-rope, but is still engaging and worth your time. It is not often we have a complete history written by a first-hand eyewitness, but the fact Josephus' work was financed by Vespasian and he lived in Rome at the time obviously taints it with bias. Antiquities of the Jews by Flavius Josephus - Could barely understand a word of it lol. It presumes a lot of knowledge on the Levant and the various rulers/religions/ethnic groups that inhabited it in antiquity. Not a beach read but very informative if you don't mind googling 10 terms/rulers/ethnic groups per minute. A history of the Jewish War by Steve Mason - This is a BEEFY book, but approachable. Steve Mason is the best kind of historian. That which is not trying to impress, but rather inform. He doesn't know all the answers, but rather guides the reader through his attempts to find them. The overall aim of the book is to look critically at Josephus' account, as it is the most complete one we have. As Mason walks you through his doubts, beliefs, and assumptions on the First Jewish War, you learn a great deal about what separates good history from bad history. Highly recommend, weirdly enthralling coin section, I have never touched a boob and never will. Rome: Rise and Fall of an Empire by Simon Baker - Approachable, fun, light, I've talked about it before. There's a chapter on the first Jewish War which sparked my interest in this subject, there's a bit too much moral grandstanding though, and I think they drank the Josephus kool-aid a bit too much. Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan - This is largely an argumentative work that's trying to prove that Jesus Christ was a Jewish nationalist whose beliefs were later white-washed in order to be more palatable to the Roman elite. I'm not going to remark on whether or not that's accurate, but the first half of the book delves into the zealot faction, the sicarii, Herod the Great, and the political significance of the "messiah". Very fun read, until it talks about this weird cult-classic book called, "The Bible". It's short, regardless. An interesting place to start, if you wish to.

Some additional things: 1 - The romans had legalized religions, almost all of them were legalized by sincretizing with the roman religion, the Jews where different, they got their status because the romans didn't want to deal with rebellions, although they almost had several of those because of the incompetance of the governors 2 - Roman involvement goes way back in the, to the time the jews were under the Seleucids and fought for independence, after these wars the jewish kings would greatly expand their kingdom that at the start was basically just Jerusalem and it's surrouding area to conquer Edom (where Herod the Great family is from), the rest of Judea and some lands beyond the Jordan 3 - The Jews were heavily divided internally having a faction of priests that had actual control of the temple and were pretty hellenistc and would support the government, the pharisees that had more favour with the people and were politically diverse, people who just wanted the old dinasty back and various sects in the desert, they all fought for power 4 - The Zelots were a mixed bunch some of them were just groups of bandits, some were actual guerrillas 5 - Because christianity in it's conception was praticed by jews more then by gentiles, the romans confused both groups constantly 6 - After the jewish defeat in Jerusalem, the city would be converted into a pagan city and the jews (and some christians) would be barred from entering it for a long while 7 - The last stronghold of the jewish rebellion was Massada that would only fall between 73-74 a.D. , the romans were frustated when It fell because instead of killing the jewish resistance, they found all of them dead by the same type of pact described in the video. Sorry for the bad english, still need to read an English grammar book so I stop making grammar mistakes.

The thing about Roman rule of Judea that I always thought was comical was that a modern equivalent would be America taking over Saudi Arabia, putting the king of the UAE in charge of it, and putting up McDonald's McRib advertising in Mecca. As a Jew who grew up religious, I've only learned this from that perspective. A lot of bullshit aspects of God and piety being shoved into the whole story. But it's kind of cool to learn how badass they were just being a pissed off group who didn't give in to the invading force, and rebelled against the Roman Empire and making them work for their win. And how it wasn't a bunch of pure religious people believing God will do all the work but gorilla attacks. It's funny how the descendents portray the narrative in a way that makes them less interesting. They also tend to skim over the whole civil war between the Jews at that time that lead to their downfall. But it's a narrative that doesn't really fit the religious belief.

Idk about where you grew up but I feel the civil war aspect was often touched upon where I grew up as in a way to really the "we must stay United" point strong.
@arthurdurham Жыл бұрын
@@nirartov4863 In a very Orthodox community. It was mentioned but it was about the bad people straying away from god. Not about the in fighting and actual politics of the time. And also skimmed over that they turned from god so he smote them with the Greeks then the Romans. Nothing to do with what was actually going on or there being a civil war.
@superelizabeth9253 Жыл бұрын
The same thing is done with hannukah. The actual fighting is shoved to make way for the miracle and how god saved us and shit. Bs. If god does exists he is an evil god and we, while still keeping our traditions, must not put our fate in his hands.
@superelizabeth9253 Жыл бұрын
@Danny Al you got one part of that wrong. Hannukah doesnt celebrate bar kokhbas revolt. It celebrates the maccabean revolt, 200 years earlier

So at 33:30 when he mentions the Roman historian writing that " the Jews worshipped dionysus" keep in mind that the Romans beleved that other culturs worshipped the same god as them in different ways (or at least convinced them that they were the same god). So for example : when some Romans visited the early vikings and they start talking about how they are worshipping Odin: Romans be like: "Ah yes, you're worshipping Mercury".

Fantastic. The Cobbler production quality never ceases to disappoint. You somehow manage to create compelling historical scenes with ps2 3d rendered landscapes, and pies in robes....like the fuck?

I have fallen headlong, bussy up, in love with this series in a way i dont fully understand. I have rewatched parts 1 & 2 atleast five times (probably more) in the past couple of months and i have noticed its become somewhat of a comfort series for me. Something to put on and just listen to. Idk if its the subject matter or Cobblers great education style, but I love these videos. Keep it up chief

There’s this moment in most of Cobbler’s videos where I’ll be so invested in the video and then my brain will detect that he’s used “Help me faith” from Far Cry 5 again; I fondly name this moment “the rapture” Killer choice for a song though

Well done man I both learned a bunch and laughed a bunch. I really appreciate the work you put into these and how you're able to tackle such an array of topics ranging from gaming to history. It's also impressive that you're able to (successfully) push the limits of your comedy while also (based on comments) appealing to people across the entire political spectrum. I'm a dirty leftist who despises both the far right and far left but I especially can't bare the hyper sensitivity both the right and the left have when it comes to comedy (being unironically bigoted, censoring, failing to understand irony/the concept of a joke etc)

I never comment, but I'm genuinely happy for you that your channel has blown up in the way it did. I'm fortunate that I love both games and ancient history so I can enjoy all your content. I don't always agree with your opinions (nothing wrong with that), but I still find your storytelling very entertaining and insightful. I'm no patron but I hope the plushy thats on it its way might remedy some of that. I hope this lets you pursue whatever you want creatively and I can't wait for whatever you wish to post next. Enjoy the moment, your quality of videos deserve it.
