Continuing on with the Toolmaster repairs and restoration..... Toolmaster D1 is in poor shape and I weld and regrind the Dogs...

I click on this video because of the milling machine, but then I saw a planer in the background. In the 70's and 80's I worked in a track shop (railroad track) cutting switch points, guardrails, crossings, filler bars (castings) and many other things. It was a very enjoyable time of my life. I am now old and retired and still miss cutting steel on the milling machines and planers I use to operate. Thanks for the Video.

Steve the clutch collet that you were using in Bob requires an adapter that goes on the spindle for it to close properly. You can get away with out drill bushings by putting a drill chuck on a 5/8 arbor and machining a flat for the set screws. Like your videos just the way they are keep it up.

These were good machines, and very hard to find. To me, one of the best things about them is no nodding adjustment for the head, which greatly increases rigidity. Since the nod adjustment is, at best, marginally useful, eliminating it was a good move. By the way, I very much enjoy longer videos. I’m with you on that. When I explain, or teach something, I tend to get somewhat pedantic. But it’s often the only way to completely explain something in a truly useful way.

Fwiw, i think your small buffer wheels are referred to as 3M ROLOC quarter- turn discs. There are similar products from others using same qtr turn interchange. Yes they are awesome! There also are bench grinder cleaning/ polishing wheels....3M Scotch-brite. A bit pricey, but they WORK,and last!! Different aggressiveness available. I like them a ton!! ( as usual, 3m is spendy but always worth it for real guys working on valuable metal. Just my 2¢ worth. Keep up the video production...it will always improve. I appreciate your work!

The snap ring did not reach the grove because someone put in a new gear trying to fix the wear problem and did not fit the new gear and just drove it on until it snapped into place... The replacement gear was too thick and that's why Bob came into play...

The dials are accurate on the Hardinge , but when you face something you should use the carriage stop to adjust the depth one rev on the screws is .041.I made a micrometer adjusting wrench for accurate adjustments .I can show you what I made if interested .

I took a look at my 1-D today, at the drive for the manual quill feed. The outer snap ring was KIA, the remains mostly still in the housing of the handle. So I put a new snap ring on and found that the manual feed doesn’t work, the exact opposite problem yours had. I’m guessing there is some obstruction in the power quill feed box that is preventing the feed shaft from moving fully to the right. I didn’t dig further into it, but from the outside, my cog gear (the one retained by the snap ring) looked exactly the same as yours before “Bob” modified it. Has me scratching’ my head a little.

IS your D1 running on 220 three phase? If so would you mind looking at the heaters in the back electrical panel and tell me the values for the three sets? Mine is 440 and I want to change it to 220 , I have values like C7.78A and C0.78A .... I have a chart and can find close ones, just wondered what the factory put in... I have some video on the removal and reinstall of all of that.... The feed gear has to line up with the gear on the end of that shaft and push into lockup to work... The power feed box just has a gear attached and can be removed off the machine, no connectors.. SO the only things that can be wrong. 1. the gear that I had to ream out has a key and it must be there to turn the quill. 2. there is a spring on the shaft that goes through the head and makes the gear on the other end of the shaft engage the gear on the power feed. Not much to lock up in there....

You should be able to adjust the collar that holds the ball detent so that the handle can be stowed in the up position. I had to monkey around with it on my 1D too.

I was expecting something a little different for your problem. Mostly, because I was called out on a job to fix a 'no feed' on a Pratt and Whitney jig bore one time. Come to find out, some "night shift" 🤣guy, put an 1 1/4 drill bit in the thing and tried to power feed it thru a chunk of steel. Yea, it was broke inside and was a real pain to get it apart far enough to clear the scrap and fix it.

That would have been too short for the power feed... Fine balance between the two dog gears..... The replaced gear was too thick to fit between the snap ring groves and there was more room for handle throw on the manual feed side.

I also have a Cincinnati 1D with a quill feed issue. The manual feed is fine, the right hand side has never been apart (the original paint shows that outer cover plate has never been off). The issue is that when I shift to power feed, it will start feeding okay, but seems to stall out (the quill stops feeding). The hand wheel is still turning, but the quill is not advancing. It goes again if I give it a little help with the manual feed. To fix it, which side should I dig into first? Regards, David

There is really no "clutch" in the quill drive to give you problems... From the back side of the feed gearbox to the quill rack and onto the manual handle is all gears. Does the manual feed slip? Take a block of wood and place it under the spindle then try moving the spindle downward with the manual handle... IF there is no slip it would mean that the gear that moved the spindle rack is ok and the key is not sheared off in there. IF I were to take a guess I would say that a pin has sheared on the gear that engages with the feed gearbox or has maybe stripped enough to not engage well with the output gear.. I would take off the manual handle cover and push against the shaft to see if there is any slop in the shaft. That shaft has a spring that pushes the shaft to the left of the head and engages the feed gear. Otherwise it's time for you to lift the head up, remove the phenolic gear ( that might be slipping also ) and then remove the feed box to check the gears there. .... You lucky Dog :)

Now for the rest of the story. I attempted to disassemble the feed gear box while in place on the machine. Basically I followed your videos, I just went furter. It is possible to get the gear box mostly apart and loose on the machine, but I could not get it completely apart or off. The manual says to lift the motor and pull the helical fiber gear (drive input to the feed gear box). So that is what I did, then entire little feed gear box comes off easily. Per the manual, the motor, Reeves drive and reduction gear come as an assembly and can be left hanging, with room to remove the fiber gear and bearing/shaft. The problem was at the feed box output - the 3/16" spring pin (#445B on the "Spindle Housing and Overarm" drawing - credit to Mr. Rucker at VM) had sheared off. That pin secures a small face spline "Clutch" #446B - which drives the shaft that crosses over to the other side of the machine. Now there is plenty of cleaning, replacing all the o-rings and seals (per your effort on avoiding oil leaks) and getting it all back together. 🙂 David

Who the hell Knows !... Went back to my regular Rode directional mic and all the clips had a ticking noise... Some clips not as bad as others... Used a noise reduction filter to make it better but it still sucks... Think it's the Canon M50 mark 2 making it happen.. Last night I gave up and set everything back to factory defaults in an effort to make it go away... I've never changed anything in there anyway, always on auto, but will see if it goes back to normal....

IT's been a PITA ! Tonight I finally track down the problem and it is all because of the Rode Directional mic I was using :( The mic is emitting a clicking sound and a whine when it is near a light. I tried to take out the clicks using filters and that made it like it is... It took me two days to find the problem... Sorry....

Fix the audio, Steve. Thats my only criticism. It is choppy and breaks up.

I'm working on it... :( I reset that camera back to factory resets today and it seemed to help.

No Problem with the video your audio has dropouts on it and click back in when you speak

IT was a bad mic...... All fixed now :)
