I had that exact thing happen- but when I would clamp one side the other would spring out. I had to end up gluing the top with CYA glue, and only work in 2 inch sections until it dried. That way I could control it and ensure a previously glued area didn't shift out of control. You did a great job.

I own two Martin's a D-28 and a D-41, both were purchased new around the same time in 1990. Both guitars have had their binding separate just like this. I've never seen this happen on any of my other guitars. I contacted Martin and they told me they were too busy to take my guitars in and referred me to the factory authorized repair shop. The factory authorized repair guy said he might be able to get around to it in three to four months. He said he had 20 Martin's in his shop with the exact same problem. I'm sure Martin must have experimented with an unproven "new" adhesive and is now suffering the consequences. In any case you would think that a company that had been building guitars for that long would not get caught with their pants down! I feel that Martin has lost its way and not the company we once knew. Ordered a Collings, time to move on.

@@rickperrotta this thing with bindings is wild 🙃 I think this is combo of bad choice of glue (it was all gummy) and celluloid binding. But this Martin was laying in bad environment for about couple years, and then someone tried to fix it himself. This was not good at all

Absolutely! Big brands don’t care about customers issues, not even if you expose the problem to the world community. Realy it’s time to get educate and move to oder brands that simply cares about product, people and gives you a REAL lifetime warranty.

As so many other brands they try to cut corners and ask top prizes, so in the end you just pay for the name, so many "cheaper" brands do not have these problems and for people without perfect hearing they all sound the same as I experienced when I played my Sigma DR28 against a Martin D28 in a shop with really good musicians, we blinded the headstocks and no one could hear or feel the difference. Ended up selling the Sigma because I felt both Martin and the Sigma were in fact verry inunteresting guitars soundwise for me and after playing a good deal of expensive Martins I now know these are not my guitars.

I saw a video on Martin's Facebook page, and in it, one of the builders was using a bottle of Elmer's glue for the binding. I don't know if that's the reason for this prevalent issue, but it doesn't seem like a coincidence

To my knowledge Martin had around 2014 issues with a certain batch of glue. The repair should be covered by Martins warranty.

My1993 HD-28v has only had finish issues. The finish delaminates and chips off. I bought it ne and Martin doesn’t want to warranty repair it. As a septuagenarian it’s becoming hard to play, my 000-18 and slope shoulder Gibson get all the play now.

@@LegsON: Oh, OK, you were just referring to the binding coming loose. In this case, it was a matter of humidity. What Usually happens, to Martins, is the plastic binding Shrinks, lengthwise and pulls itself loose. When that happens, you need to anchor the ends first, then work toward the middle, heating the plastic and stretching back into place, gluing and clamping quickly. That happened to mine, too. It is indeed a pain in the ass. 😁✌🖖

@@notabot6837 I’m only doing it if it is necessary. It’s way, way more work. Top and sides could change shape after some time and it will be so hard to put it back together 🙃 And overall all repair could be more noticeable if I do so. And here situation was bad, but not as bad 😊
