One of flerfers favorite rebuttals is 'fish-eye lens'. But don't they realize that simply panning the camera up/down slightly, such that the horizon appears above/below the centerline of the camera disproves that? 'Fish-eye' causes curvature towards the center of the camera lens. So if the curvature is the same above/below the center, then it's clearly not 'fish-eye'. I think Wolfie6020 did a video about this some time back. But then, as I've often commented, Wolfie is a much better photographer than any flerfer. :)

Wolfie, I'm a weapon systems engineer who specialises in guidance systems. Would be happy to offer some insight in to Schuler tuning and it's necessity for compensating for the curvature of the Earth. It's akin to a compass pointing north, you can't see the magnetic field but you can detect its presence. It's the same with Schuler tuning, even though we can't see the curvature while standing on the surface, we can detect the curvature by virtue of the compensation required to prevent error drift in inertial navigation systems. Without Schuler, the guidance systems basically paints the curvature by way of the error induced over distance. If you want some talking points I'd be happy to help out, would make for an interesting video for the viewers who like the more nerdy side of debunking this insanity!

He DOES say you can't see the curvature DIFFERENCE in the two hemispheres that give the earth a slight, and I mean VERY slight, 'pear shape'. This is likely the source of the misquote. You absolutely CAN see the curve much much lower. It is not a super obvious curve like holding a basket ball......

I remember Carl Sagan describing a simple thought experiment in Cosmos in which a small piece of a neutron star was dropped above the Earth. Due to its extreme density, it would cut through the Earth's crust, mantle and core as they were just air and reappear somewhere in China before it stopped and fell back. This would happen repeatedly thousands of times until it finally came to rest at the Earth's centre. Carl Sagan didn't specify _where_ that piece of neutron star was dropped, but if assuming it happened somewhere in the US, it wouldn't have reappeared in China, but somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. Anyway, it should have been obvious that it would have reappeared in the _southern_ hemisphere if dropped _anywhere_ in the northern. It's the flattards that uncritically swallow everything coming from their "leaders", while people with a normal IQ understand that they shouldn't take every detail in such an informal thought experiment literally.

I think being a flat earther is very much like being a globe earther. They both take a leap of faith. So many flat earthers, that do testing or understand observation and how the eyes sees and atmospheric conditions has realized that they can see way further than they should, but that only starts to give them the shape of the 1 surface they stand on. But that does not tell them if they are on a half circle, or a disc or what have you... SO usually with these types of unknowns, the answer is usually somewhere in the middle.

NDT was technically wrong but that came from a talk about how large the earth is and how thin the atmosphere is (the edge of space is only 2mm above this beach ball, that sort of thing). He was also correctly addressing how wide angle lens distortion is mistaken for curvature. Actual earth curvature is pretty slight even from high altitude, and can be obscured by clouds and haze. So the phrase "you can see curvature from xxx feet" is somewhat subjective.

QED explains it correctly. Neil was talking about the actual curve of the Earth which is 1 degree per 60 NM. You cannot see that unless you are much higher than 124,000 ft. The horizon you see from 50,000 ft is a small circle on the Earth with a Diameter of around 550 miles. As you are looking down on this circle at an angle of around 4 degrees you see the horizon curvature.

I was on a hike with a few friends and this topic came up, and out of the 5 2 claimed they see the curve of earth when flying in an airplane...So, this goes to show how LAME such a after thought of a statement that is. Oddly, Neil DeGrass Tyson says there is no way to see any curve even at 128,000 feet (referring to RedBull jump of Felix Baumgtarner) , let alone 50,000 feet.

"Because the Earth should rotate under the plane" No, it shouldn't. For the same reason when you move a fishbowl at a constant speed (so no acceleration) the fish is not pushed against the glass. We, and the plane, and all objects on earth, move together with the Earth. If you are on a plane, and jump, are you suddenly pushed against the bottom of the plane? No, you move at the same speed of the air inside the plane, and the plane itself (always assuming a constant speed). You have absolutely no idea how the world around you works.
