Sixteen years ago I put a “flat” Mag Hytec cover on my new 2003 Dodge Ram 2500. Towed toy haulers, travel trailers, you name it. Living in Southern California steep mountain grades are everywhere. I ran good quality synthetic gear lube. 300,000 miles later, not a single problem. Banks is a master salesman. If your only experience with the “flat” differential covers is the Banks videos I’m going to discount your opinion, nothing personal. If flat differential covers were really a problem this post would be full of guys complaining about the longevity or lack thereof of their pinion gears don’t you think. Those videos without the sales pitch don’t show anything but fluid moving around in the differential housing. Which is what you should see. And still no part three video? I put the Mag Hytec on for the drain plug and fill hole which reduces maintenance time and it looks nice.

@@stradplayer90 Shaky reasoning? He showed very clearly (literally caused they used lexan to see inside the cover) how the shape of the cover affects the oil circulation. These squared off covers screw up the oil flow, not allowing enough oil to get to the pinion bearing.
@chevy5137
@chevy5137 5 жыл бұрын
Granted in the Banks videos that there was a lot of oil coming up the flat side of the aftermarket cover but that doesn't mean that no oil was getting to the pinion, I'm sure the pinion gear was getting plenty of oil and you just couldn't see it because there were no cameras back there to show it. Also he talked about aeration and I saw more bubbles from the stock cover than the aftermarket cover. One other thing is he talked about the temperature on the aftermarket covers being higher than the stock cover yet he never gave any temperature numbers on any of the aftermarket covers! In the very end he talked about them making a cover and it looks like it will be rounded and it seems to me he wants to discredit the flat back cover so that when his rounded cover goes into production people will think it's better but that's just my opinion!

Banks has yet to reveal his test data, I am very interested in seeing if the increased surface area of these aftermarket covers outweighs the benefit of the smaller channeled cover. What banks video failed to emphasize is that a gear will carry fluid through the housing regardless of the back cover channel. while the stock design helps fluid circulate, and helps cooling flow, does the increased capacity and surface area combined with the lesser but still carried fluid by the gear alone result in overall better cooling. my personal observation is that the stock channeled cover circulates a lot more fluid than needed to the axle shafts for the reason that many people do not check the rear end fluid levels sometimes and often for the entirety of the vehicles life. its more of a security feature for low fluid levels than an actual be all, and end all design advantage. i could be way off but, I wont write off these aftermarket designs just yet.

Well put. Your saying what I’m thinking. Banks never finish the test video. I went with the mag hi tech for the dip stick and drain plug on a 2001 Ram 2500 H O. After a year and a half from factory the oil drained out black. Next hypiod charge was November 2020. It was was only moderately darker than new oil. Through the years I added very little oil and the magnet had very small amounts of metal. The axle seals are still good so I’m very happy. Hypiod gear oil stinks anyway but the used oil never smelled burned. Mr Banks give us your results. As for now I’m assuming it isn’t as big a deal as you market it to be. I should mention the Ram has 187,000 miles. It’s not a daily drive but the camper and trailer with the SxS make for a heavy enough load.

Should have mentioned that the ones with a brace on top can't mount your brake line. I had serious trouble with steel pans leaking because they bend where bolt holes are and won't create enough force in between the bolt holes to crush the gasket. After switching to a solid aluminum I have never had a leak since. The cooling, looks and structure are just a bonus. Can't stand leaks.

Hi Thoroughbred Diesel, I appreciate you uploading this video but I have to concur with "Drwinlied's" comments; there is no recommendation as such for what cover to use (which is what your video title states). What I see is a presentation of what is/was available (back in 2014) but no other useful information. Ford, Ford/Sterling, Dana manufacturers have designed their covers for specific specific engineering reasons - your description of these covers does not address any "pros or cons" of these covers other than the "look" i.e. this video is purely "descriptive". The OEM shape of differential covers/casing is dictated by lubrication distribution especially on high usage differentials such as "muscle cars" and heavier duty trucks. I do not see any advantages in the covers you presented other than convenience of checking the differential oil level (loss of differential oil is a very rare occurrence in real life, non-racing applications). I would recommend reviewing the dynamics of differential lubrication/oil flow and/or renaming your video. Ciao, L (FoMoCo engineer).

Ok, I'm no expert, while doing some research on engine oil, is it dirty or worn out? I came across information that said something like this, if the oil is down 1 quart the oil temp raises alot, so I'm thinking as cool as these covers look, the thinking may be the more gear lube inside, the lower the temperature inside. Banks seems to pointing out the gear lube is not properly directed to components inside the diff. I have no stake in this my diff has the stock cover.

Huge waste of money! Let me see who I’m going to trust, some aftermarket company or an axle manufacturer/auto company with millions in R&D invested🤔 The Gail Banks study has confirmed suspicions I’ve had for years. The data he has collected is truly impressive and already shows these covers are inhibiting the intended operation from a lubrication standpoint. Can’t wait to see the final conclusions from next installment

While I appreciate at least the overview you provided to these parts, not a lot of useful information on performance. Especially for a title that states, "not just bling" there was literally no factual information provided to prove these aftermarket covers were not, in fact, just bling. Design and actual function of design are certainly both worth a look. Does the Mag-Hytec not having the heat fins cast through the inner portion of the unit make an actual difference? Who knows, we certainly aren't finding out in this video. That likely comes off more disgruntled than I really am, but I was hoping to learn useful information and not a single thing was tested in any way.

I own a banks cover and to be honest they are all hype and a great sales pitch. Also the flat back covers look a lot better than the stupid banks air scoops. Never mind the price tag, I could have gotten a BD Diesel front and back cover for cheaper than the Banks.

I can't justify the price. Why would I purchase this? Just to have more diff fluid?
@moaski
@moaski 7 жыл бұрын
Midwest Bodybuilding Heat kills parts. Parts are expensive to purchase and install. If you tow or haul a lot with your truck on a regular basis the added lubrication, ease of service and cooling properties of these covers will help your axels and differential last much longer. Some of these covers lower your rear end temperatures by 45-degrees! They aren't cheap, but if you've ever had to replace axels or differentials, these covers are a sound investment.

Well, no. Not just more fluid, but added cooling capacity as well. It's like 2 kids in a kiddie pool, it will get filthy pretty quickly. Same 2 kids in an olympic size pool, swim all day, pool looks the same. Same with oil. More oil won't contaminate as quickly, and has the added benefit of spreading the heat around over a larger volume. Cooling fins both inside and out are a larger surface area to transfer heat away from the oil, keeping it cooler. And aluminum transfers heat better than stamped steel, so it's win-win. I've seen stock, painted covers where the paint is burned off at the oil line where it heat soaks after shutdown. More oil and cast aluminum are practically a requirement for towing heavy if you want a rear end to last. My best guess is CaptP above has tow mirrors out, and runs a smoke tune, and is living in a fantasy world. 600k on a RAM.... now that's funny right there.

I appreciate Thoroughbred taking the time to make the video but it would have been much better if the script was planned ahead. This guy was not good with off the cuff talking. I could hardly make out what he said in the beginning and he really didn't have much to say about the the comparisons of each cover either. I learned nothing here but maybe saved myself a couple minutes or researching each manufactures website.

Thanks, Thoroughbred, for a good video, but is Thoroughbred showing us the covers they sell? Because I'd like their take on the Banks diff cover too? It has been designed to distribute the oil differently and air cooled as well. Check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/b17ceGZ6aK91iNU.
