06:31 As a foreigner, I still understand why you guys love the royal family. There is something magical when they appear somewhere. I couldn't imagine the UK without those beautiful weddings, Trooping the colour, Royal Ascot, Garter Day or the Queen's Christmas speech. I also admire the Queen for doing her duty now for 70 years! On the other side, I really feel sorry for the homeless guy outsite of Windsor Castle. I just would ask if it really changed his life (and that one of others) if the UK became a republic. So far as I know, the royals do quite a bit for society (e.g. The Prince's Trust). In addition to that, the absolute majority of the tax payer's money is used to maintain all that old buildings and castles and not so much for the royals themselves. Unless you guys want to take down Windsor castle or Buckimham palace, the tax payers still would have to pay for those expenses within a republic.
@rebekahmcdermott55046 жыл бұрын
I am American and I quite like the royal family. However, I do get the irritation over people’s taxes going towards their riches and luxuries that the majority of Britain doesn’t have. I mean it’s one thing for business people to become wealthy, but they have earned their money from hard work, especially if they weren’t born into wealth in the first place. The royals on the other hand, would have zero money if it weren’t for the working people of GB, so how is it fair that they live in the lap of luxury and are essentially the richest people in the UK, but have never actually had to work for their money? It’s a bit like the ridiculous amount of money that politicians make. It’s just asinine.

I have read that Queen Victoria's excessive mourning after her husband Albert died made a lot of people consider ending the Monarchy in the later 1860s. Other members of my family have been to London, as a step-uncle was an NGO big shot, after securing a Doctorate from Oxford. I have only visited Switzerland and France. My favorite city was Geneva, the lake & all. Rural France was nice too. In Paris, I only walked across it between railway stations. I was fluent enough to get by, but as a recent H.S. graduate did not have loads of cash. I enjoyed my visit, and got along with people generally.

One of my favorite U.K. destinations that I visited back in the 80's was Blackpool. I grew up near a seaside amusement park town in the U.S. so having had British friends at the time who lived near Blackpool, it was at the top of my list then. This was in the early 80s, long before your time. It's probably rundown like nearly all of our seaside amusement parks here now. Blackpool was the place to be back in the day. The girls, the food, the rides. As far as the Royals go I think most people here like Prince Harry. He is a vet, he is down to earth and seems like he pulls his own weight and it seems like he didn't inherit the pompousness that seemingly goes hand in hand with having been born privileged.

Greetings, Joel and Lia! I am a second generation American; when my mother's father was twelve, he and his parents immigrated to America from Scotland (Loch Lomond area). I have read British history for a very long time, love the beautiful countries and counties of the UK, and enjoy your channel greatly. Your openness, generosity, and energy are lovely to experience via KZbin. Great job; very well done! Last year CGP Grey, an American living in London, had an episode on his channel called, "The True Cost of the Royal Family Explained" at kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJncipqknc1-fNk. It is truly excellent break-down of the costs and profits involved with the Royals. As a pragmatic American businessman, he sounds like an accountant defining the amazing money-making machine that is The Queen and Her Family. It is an excellent presentation and one that make strike envy in people of other countries. Your Royals go on living their lives and Americans (especially) flock to visit your shores, cities, towns, and castles to feel connected. George III might have lost us 241 years ago; however, millions of us feel the ties.

Wait staff in America are also tipped. Are they tipped in the UK? I'm guessing not. If a waiter goes the extra mile and splits the bill like a boss (not always done), I would consider tipping even higher than usual because I know that it involves extra work.
@ThoseTwoBrits17 жыл бұрын
Yeah they’re tipped but it’s not compulsory as wages for waiters in the UK are higher than in the US. So they don’t rely on tips for their living. It’s literally just seen as an added bonus if they do get tips. 10% is usually seen as generous.

Hey guys American...so the Royals question. It is true in some sense about poverty, but honestly I have worked with the less fortunate for much of my adult life...it would not matter if u gave all the tax money to the homeless there would still be homeless. On top of that cultural identity is so important...cough cough I know the british took that away from a lot of cultures in the past and unfortunately we did the same thing to the American Indian and Samoans of Hawaii so I get it, but i think keeping our traditions and national identity is important to understanding who we are. We can always learn from our past, but we should never just ignore where we came from. I love watching u 2 keep up the good work

The issue I have with it, the Queen insists that everyone from around the world that she meets adopts HER ways, HER customs, and entirely disregard their own. And then has the audacity to claim disrespect if she’s treated like… a human being? And thinks people uneducated or unrefined if they don’t behave by her arbitrary rules. No one. Is above. Reproach. And obviously she has zero respect for anyone or anything. When she meets other royals does she have to study a list of dumb rules and then perform like a circus dog while avoiding all the idiotic things they said not to do? No. She doesn’t. But that is exactly what she expects of the rest of the world. Like seriously what is so disrespectful about considering everyone’s needs and not just hers? NOTHING. The royal family bothers me

We are a democracy and the Royal Family has no input on the running of the country. That said, they are influential around the world in a positive way, and in terms of actual money I am pretty sure they are a net gain. Historically we have had good and bad monarchs, and even none during that short period while we were a Republic, but never tore them down and wiped them out like they did in Russia and France. There are 27 other countries with monarchs including Denmark, Norway, Japan, and Cambodia, while the queen is monarch to a further 15 places besides the UK. I am more in favour than against because the whole thing links back to our History. You can go back to before there was a Britain, before England, to the times of Wessex and Mercia and still find out stuff like King Cerdic ruled Wessex from 519 - 534 ad - and trace all the stuff that happened from then until now. That is amazing to me...
