I really want to move to the Netherlands but after Brexit, Dutch citizenship requiring you to renounce your existing citizenships seems like a really big decision to make if I ended up living there long enough (which I hope I do). Having to give up my New Zealand (where I was born) and British (lived in Wales most of my life, but moved back to NZ for uni recently) citizenship if I wanted Dutch citizenship because British citizenship doesn't let you have a feeling of security in residence anymore (if you get the right visas to begin with) means I could never move back... while I imagine I'd want to stay for the rest of my life in the Netherlands, that's a big thing to throw away - there's always the chance for unexpected changes that could change your mind later, and to lose the security of "backup options" is a little scary.

I have met many Dutch, but also some Dutch Frisians. Although it is not possible to understand a Frisian speaking, unless you wrote it down and studied it, the way they pronounce their words gives you the impression it is English. Even Dutch doesn't sound so similar. It is recognised, Frisian is the closest language to English & Lowland Scots.

I think the people are strikingly similar when us Brits open up. I've been to the Nederlands many times and actually did part of my dissertation in planning (urban design) on why cultures such as the Dutch have evolved such significant community ties - my findings were that the route is the amount of water and the creation of 'polders' requiring communities to club together in order to live. Almost islands in the marsh. British culture evolved differently with feudal lords owning the land and commoners were people that worked on the big estates so there was much more of a hierarchical system entrenched in the social system.

I'm British but I absolutely adore The Netherlands - I fell in love with it on my first visit about ten years ago, and have been back lots of times since then. Last year I raised money for doctors in Ukraine by cycling all around the country - 1600km in twelve days - and stayed with Vrienden op de Fiets hosts. Everyone was so nice to me - I was really touched by how supportive and helpful everyone was, and I have even stayed friends with some of my hosts. I was also on local TV and in the Algemeen Dagblad! I think the Dutch are like improved versions of the British - you share a similar sense of humour, but you are far less conservative and much more open, tolerant and relaxed. The English in particular can be rather parochial and reactionary - you only need to look at the state of our politics to see proof of that. The Netherlands is therefore governed much more sensibly than the UK, which is why you have far less inequality and a higher standard of living than us.

The two countries surprisingly have a lot in common. Bland and stodgy food that's extremely high in calories and impractical to eat everyday, and beer is the most popular alcohol. Both prefer to eat the cuisine of their former West Indie colony (India for UK, and Indonesia for the Netherlands). Both were European colonial powers, holding onto many territories, including the Guianas of South America (British Guiana being Guyana, and Dutch Guiana being Suriname), and their most priced colony in Asia (Indian subcontinent for UK and Indonesia for the Netherlands). Both have depressing Northern European weather, Protestant work ethic and attitude toward life. Both are historically Protestant nations, with a Catholic younger sibling (Ireland for UK and Belgium for the Netherlands). The Dutch just happened to be more Calvinist, while the Brits more Anglican, though the Presbyterian Scots are technically a different form of Calvinists. Both speak a West Germanic language, albeit, English is the most Latinized Germanic language. The Western Frisian dialect in Friesland is probably the closest living language to modern English, if Scots is not considered a separate language. Outside of minor languages, Dutch is probably the closest major language to English, and both have that derpy rhotic R sound. The Dutch are the highest proficiency of English outside Anglophone nations, and their accent tends to sound a lot milder than a lot of other foreign countries, other than the Scandinavian countries. A lot of Brits tell me the Netherlands feels like the closest country to home within continental Europe. Aside from their high proficiency in English, the infrastructure, architecture, weather, maritime vibe, royal family, attitude to drinking, eating, working, and, even humor seems to be the most similar.

I have met the best English and the worst. The best in England and on vacation in Tenerife, Benidorm and Kreta. But also the very worst of them them on the same locations, being drunk as many Russians 24/7. But in all, I like them. I have had the best conversations with people from all over Great Britain. Very inviting, open and generally interested. Cheerio! The English TV series are the very best worldwide and their humour amazing. I had planned visiting Brighton and Hove (see my surname) to see Tears for Fears July 22nd, but the concert was cancelled. New chances will appear sooner or later.

I took the Ferry and directly noticed the outstanding talent for binge drinking largely outperforming the Dutch. As well as was there ability to loudly misbehave; I do not count false singing-shouting of songs and exposing fat pink bellies while drilling all over the place into that. It is obviously noticeable football is an English invention. If we consider clothing alone we may conclude half of their warehouses is packed with football fan ware; when they show their pride there are no limits. And proud they are. Not only of their history in that sport. But also when it comes to their culture and cultural inheritage: universities, sciences, intelligency service, them being Islanders, their philosophers, theater play writers, writers, their traditions wether cricket, tea or vomiting drunk woman, their music, their inability not to be uptight and ashamed for God knows whatever reason or situation they manoeuvred themselves into trying to be polite, right or witty. And witty they are, they all know this and laugh about it the loudest their self’s in s mix of shame and pride -as if they can’t help it. Let’s say: complex, sofistacsted, well and I’ll mannered. A view on the world and a historical sense in it, with liaisons still all over the world via their common wealth that of course is decreasing by the year but that will never disappear out of their kitchen and cuisine and will always remain visible in the charming mix of people in the cities. Their sarcasm and cheek in tongue is worldwide appreciated and practiced on a daily basis with outmost care and appropriate effort. Of. Purse they are kind and if you like their kitchen it is good :) Typically English means Indian as well; point is, there’s so much there’s always something to like. Oh, I than drove to London and noticed they all drive on the wrong side of the road. Couldn’t be the alcohol tough, so it must be out of stubbornness. And after London I drove to Oxfordshire and the Cotswold area to plunge in classical rural England. And all was there: delicious food, hilly small roads, freshly cut hedges, grouses & foxes, houses and small churches made of natural stone as if they just grew out of nature. All lovely. Posh sometimes, honest and beautifully harmonious also. So far for now. I deeply and truly like British.

Jolly good old chap, it might be a bit more to do with being an island race that we are not like mainlanders, but we are definitely (pragmatic) European, however we do have an affinity with Japan, not with their Asian culture as such, but the island race bit, they drive on the left to, as does 61 other countries!?!

I'm a Dutchman and - unfortunately - I've only been three times to the UK. For every one of these visits, I went to London only. I'm a bit ashamed to admit that I'm such a stereotypical tourist. I wish I had the time and the financial means to visit other cities and villages. But I haven't even seen everything in London yet and London is such a gigantic city! Certainly to me, a simple Dutchman who lives in the southern provincial town Tilburg (220.000 inhabitants), near the Belgian border. I love Westminster Cathedral, the Tower of London and the British Museum. I could spend days in that museum! Trust me, there are enough cities and towns in the UK where I'd like to go. Too many actually to list here. But I also would love to go to these smaller, very typical, British villages where you find lots of rural cottages and cosy old pubs. When I think of the UK, I think of a wonderful nation with which we share a very interesting and long history. We've been foes, we've been allies, and we've been friends. We have fought eight bloody wars at sea. We refused to take orders from the Britons to not trade with the pioneers in the New World. We sold them weapons in the ports around New York, to allow them to fight for their independence. Queen Elizabeth I aided the Low Countries while we were beset and surpressed by the Spaniards in a religious war, where they tried to eliminate Protestantism in favour of Catholicism. Many a British boy came to our shores, during the Second World War, and paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Their remains still rest in our soil to this very day and we're incredibly grateful to the Britons, among the other allies, for liberating us. My hometown was liberated in November 1944 by the Scots. Just before the harsh and deadly winter of 1944/1945, wherein thousands - North of the major rivers in the Netherlands - died a premature death due to malnutrition; that winter is called 'Hongerwinter' (Hunger Winter). There is still a statue of a bagpiper in the city centre of Tilburg to commemorate the Scots liberating the population of Tilburg. Every year there are still veterans who come to visit us on remembrance day and liberation day. Their numbers shrink every year, but as long as we can honour these heroes we will welcome them and show them our gratitude for their immense courage. I love the English language; the history of the UK; British humour; television series (especially detectives) and the attitude of the Britons. The Britons are resilient and decisive. So whenever I watch the Last Night of the Proms on video, recorded in the Royal Albert Hall and I hear "Rule Britannia" or "Land of Hope and Glory" I feel for a moment, a teeny tiny bit, British too. My dear British friends, thank you for being you. Yours faithfully, A Dutchman

I know the Dutch through work and many visits. I like them. They are traders, inventive, entrepreneurial and easy to do business with. This trait really sets them apart from many of the European mainland nations. I don’t think one can underestimate the Dutch shared history with Great Britain of the Protestantism and Lutheran work ethic in this. Though religion is less a feature these days it was a huge influence on the way the both societies developed in terms of business, law and culture.
