Thank you for this lovely woodland tour. I'm zone 8b in the Cascade foothills in WA, so we have a lot of similar native species, and I am very happy the KZbin algorithm brought me to your channel a few weeks back because most of the other garden channels I watch are not in the same or a similar zone. My gardening adventure started with a small patch and some pollinator wildflower seeds just after the pandemic started. Then I was introduced to native plants and started down that research rabbit hole. I'm slowly trying to add both more natives and some other plants for off-season blooming for the pollinators and Anna's hummingbirds. Thank you for all the tips, ideas and encouragement!

My next door neighbor has a giant fir tree right next to the fence. The area below the tree on my side is very dense shade. I've been developing a native forest guild on my side of the fence for a few years. On my neighbors side, the ground is bare dry earth because of his dogs, occasionally it gets a layer of wood chip. I figure my side of the tree is creating the kind of plant community the fir needs to remain healthy, because if this giant ever falls directly west, it will hit my house. 🙄 I want to be sure and help the fir stay as healthy as possible. I'm using a number of the plants you showed here.

My mother's house was very similar. The huge fir did eventually die, but it gave plenty of obvious signs. They cut it down before it became an actual risk.

I'm so glad I found your channel! It's nice to have someone talking about doing permaculture in the pnw and in an urban environment. I have a small urban permaculture farm in Western WA and the needs are so different up here.

The ground under my conifers has so many roots it’s hard to dig. I’m afraid if I cut too many roots the tree will suffer. I live in Idaho (zone 7). Is there a solution? I’d really love to plant under the trees.

The prior owner chose caladiums, false holly, and a Japanese maple. All are mature and gorgeous. I gave in gracefully and bought some containers.

My problem is that the landscaper put three Junipers that get to 5 ft wide in a 3 1/2 ft wide space. I don't have room to put much there besides possibly a ground cover or vine.

Thimbleberry might be a candidate for a sloped, dry shade north facing yard.

I'm not sure if you have already gone over this in another video, but for a lot of plants, I hear you say that it has "medicinal properties". I think it would be interesting to hear an elaboration on what certain plants are used for medicinally. I don't know if you have used many plants for medicinal purposes, but it would be helpful to hear when you have used them and method of application/consumtion.

I appreciate you asking the question but is somebody who is not a doctor and doesn’t have medical training I typically say some thing as a traditional medicinal use but I don’t want to speak to it because I don’t have the expertise. I don’t want to give people a false representation or give advice that is not factual. I think it is up to somebody else to speak to the medicinal qualities of plants because I don’t feel confident in that way and I only want to speak to the things I know really well.

@@ParkrosePermaculture That is fair. I guess I just always hear people throw around medicinal a lot, but I feel like unless is it a plant that is widely known to be used in the making of a specific drug, no one ever delves beyond that - unless you get into claims that have no real scientific basis. It seems like a lot of the time, people really mean "medicinal" in the same way that a vitamin supplement is medicinal, which I think is misleading. When I hear the word medicinal, I think more of like Acetaminophen than Vitamin C - treating a specific ailment as opposed to being more preventative/healthy in general.
