If you’re into rap music, chances are, you’ve probably heard about Rich Brian, who broke out onto the scene with a viral KZbin video and was the first Indonesian artist to top the iTunes album charts for hip hop music. Given his global popularity, have you ever wondered how he’s perceived in his home country of Indonesia? How much does the Indonesian youth follow Rich Brian and his music? We hit the streets of Jakarta to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.

I'm amazed that Brian shows how much he loves Indonesia in his latest project because his story is quite painful to hear. I forget the platform, but I once watched an interview of him who said that he wanted to pursue a career in the US because as a Chinese descent he doesn't feel safe here (at that time there were many demonstrations related to Ahok case). So, he loves Indonesia, but he's not comfortable at his own home. That makes me sad and wish all the good luck for his brave decision. Fly higher, Brian!

@fonsineknshr
@fonsineknshr 4 жыл бұрын
@@ikapuchino but realistically if he wants to have a career as a rap artist in Indonesia, he'll have to do it in Jakarta. Other types of music like Dangdut might be able to grow from outside Jakarta. But as the interviewee said, Indonesians don't typically like rap & therefore it's kinda niche here. Capital/big cities usually can support niche music artists better than other cities. So if he's uncomfortable in Jakarta, he'll probably not be comfortable in other cities in terms of growing as a music artist. So, it's kinda smart business decision of him to take his career where his music has much bigger chance to blow up, in a place that appreciates rap better.
@bendegorro754

As other said, Brian's home is in Jakarta. It's like Las Vegas, New York & Washington DC combined. It's not a safe place to live. Also Cultural Friction between the local culture with the Chinese immigrant & their descendant are understandable. The Chinese are very pragmatist yet closed community and the Indonesian native are very delicate but very open community.

@@bendegorro754 Well put. Though we also have logically sound reasons for the closed-off attitude (see for example in 1998), many young ones have attempted to be more open-minded, though in a more careful manner than most in Indonesia.

But ask them about Rapper artist, low chance they can name 10, let alone ask them to ranking the artist. Brian's get "80%" popular is because he met Indonesia President J. Widodo. I don't think that he really famous in indonesia. Because: 1. Rap music isn't really famous in Indo. But there are some who really love them. So his niche is really specific. But because of his specificity, he has royal fan in indo that enough to make his popularity noticeable. 2. He use english as his lyrics. Many Indonesian people still struggling with English so they prefer the easier way to listen to their mother language. There is a chance for millenial generation in indo hear his name, but maybe didn't follow his music. And I believe, some people didn't think he is that famous because he never show up in national televisions

@@soph663 i talk about ratio as a whole comparation. Like a million fans is huge, but compare to more than 200 million Indonesian citizen, it's only 0.5%. I didn't say it as a bad thing, I only compare him to majority mainstream artist in indo. That's why I said his niche is really spesific, but royal. This spesific niche and royal fans really outspoke (and sometimes overproud). But it made him more and more noticeable.

Klo kata gue si Brian ini bisa sebesar ini cos he is true with himself, he's not faking it, it's original from him, maybe bcos he's still a teenager too so he is so pure. Look at his interviews and you will understand it. Fck with selling your country name to became more popular, if you deliver it like him i wouldn't have any complaints! Good luck to you Brian!

1:34 maybe you're right but in this case.... no, you're not. Rich Brian is very appreciated in Indonesia, people love and support him here. He even got invited by the president of Indonesia not very long ago. So I don't see how he's not appreciated enough in Indonesia.

I think you're only seeing that because you don't see, for example, the (hard-line) religious people who show such aversion to him, only because he is of different faith or his work doesn't follow their religious rules. I've seen this a lot with my own two eyes, and it's just sad. So, you're right, but 1:34 is also right. I think it also depends on who surrounds you and what kind of Indonesians you see. I mean, there are even people who were angry that he met Jokowi, despite there being a lot of other supporting it too.

I am proud of him, I'm also a fan of some of his music even if I'm not really into rap. I agree with the guy that says one factor to his popularity is that he does hip-hop which is popular in the west, and that he does it in English, he's also eccentric. But popularity nowadays also depends so much on luck. Why do some contents get more exposure thab others of the same or even higher quality? Well, that content is at the right place and at the right moment. But anyway, I hope he keeps working hard and stay true as a musician! I love that he's also trying to make Indonesia more known among the ignorant western fellas so I'm glad for that. Good luck, Brian!

as one who also hyped up and cheered him when I first watched him went viral, I really feel happy to hear his lyrics in Kids. Everyone can reach their dream no matter where you're from. and he became one of the proof of dreams do come true. Before, it's a common sense to think as an Indonesian singer you could not be famous internationally, placed no.1 in iTunes chart, etc. But Brian give an example that it is possible. so in my opinion, in some ways it encourages the young generation to reach their dreams even it's against the current situation.
